1 Depuis je montai encore à Jérusalem quatorze ans après, avec Barnabas, et je pris aussi avec moi Tite.

2 Or j'y montai par révélation, et je conférai avec ceux [de Jérusalem] touchant l'Evangile que je prêche parmi les Gentils, même en particulier avec ceux qui sont en estime, afin qu'en quelque sorte je ne courusse, ou n'eusse couru en vain.

3 Et même on n'obligea point Tite, qui était avec moi, à se faire circoncire, quoiqu'il fût Grec.

4 Et ce fut à cause des faux frères qui s'étaient introduits dans [l'Eglise], et qui y étaient entrés couvertement pour épier notre liberté, que nous avons en Jésus-Christ, afin de nous ramener dans la servitude.

5 Et nous ne leur avons point cédé par aucune sorte de soumission, non pas même un moment; afin que la vérité de l'Evangile demeurât parmi vous.

6 Et je ne suis en rien différent de ceux qui semblent être quelque chose, quels qu'ils aient été autrefois, (Dieu n'ayant point d'égard à l'apparence extérieure de l'homme) car ceux qui sont en estime ne m'ont rien communiqué [de plus].

7 Mais, au contraire, quand ils virent que la Prédication de l'Evangile du Prépuce m'était commise, comme celle de la Circoncision l'était à Pierre :

8 (Car celui qui a opéré avec efficace par Pierre en la charge d'Apôtre envers la Circoncision, a aussi opéré avec efficace par moi envers les Gentils.)

9 Jacques, dis-je, Céphas, et Jean (qui sont estimés être les Colonnes) ayant reconnu la grâce que j'avais reçue, me donnèrent, à moi et à Barnabas, la main d'association, afin que nous allassions vers les Gentils, et qu'ils allassent eux vers ceux de la Circoncision;

10 [Nous recommandant] seulement de nous souvenir des pauvres; ce que je me suis aussi étudié de faire.

11 Mais quand Pierre fut venu à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu'il méritait d'être repris.

12 Car avant que quelques-uns fussent venus de la part de Jacques, il mangeait avec les Gentils; mais quand ceux-là furent venus, il s'en retira, et s'en sépara, craignant ceux qui étaient de la Circoncision.

13 Les autres Juifs usaient aussi de dissimulation comme lui, tellement que Barnabas lui-même se laissait entraîner par leur dissimulation.

14 Mais quand je vis qu'ils ne marchaient pas de droit pied selon la vérité de l'Evangile, je dis à Pierre devant tous : si toi qui es Juif, vis comme les Gentils, et non pas comme les Juifs, pourquoi contrains-tu les Gentils à Judaïser?

15 Nous qui sommes Juifs de naissance, et non point pécheurs d'entre les Gentils;

16 Sachant que l'homme n'est pas justifié par les œuvres de la Loi, mais seulement par la foi en [Jésus-]Christ, nous, dis-je, nous avons cru en Jésus-Christ, afin que nous fussions justifiés par la foi de Christ, et non point par les œuvres de la Loi; parce que personne ne sera justifié par les œuvres de la Loi.

17 Or si en cherchant d'être justifiés par Christ, nous sommes aussi trouvés pécheurs, Christ est-il pourtant ministre du péché? à Dieu ne plaise!

18 Car si je rebâtissais les choses que j'ai renversées, je montrerais que j'ai été moi-même un prévaricateur.

19 Mais par la Loi je suis mort à la Loi, afin que je vive à Dieu.

20 Je suis crucifié avec Christ, et je vis, non pas maintenant moi, mais Christ vit en moi; et ce que je vis maintenant en la chair, je le vis en la foi du Fils de Dieu, qui m'a aimé, et qui s'est donné lui-même pour moi.

21 Je n'anéantis point la grâce de Dieu : car si la justice est par la Loi, Christ est donc mort inutilement.

1 Then after the space of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus with me.

2 And I went up by revelation; and I put before them the good news which I was preaching among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were of good name, so that the work which I was or had been doing might not be without effect.

3 But not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was made to undergo circumcision:

4 And that because of the false brothers let in secretly, who came searching out our free condition which we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might make servants of us;

5 To whom we gave way not even for an hour; so that the true words of the good news might still be with you.

6 But from those who seemed to be important (whatever they were has no weight with me: God does not take man's person into account): those who seemed to be important gave nothing new to me;

7 But, quite the opposite, when they saw that I had been made responsible for preaching the good news to those without circumcision, even as Peter had been for those of the circumcision

8 (Because he who was working in Peter as the Apostle of the circumcision was working no less in me among the Gentiles);

9 When they saw the grace which was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who had the name of being pillars, gave to me and Barnabas their right hands as friends so that we might go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision;

10 Only it was their desire that we would give thought to the poor; which very thing I had much in mind to do.

11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I made a protest against him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong.

12 For before certain men came from James, he did take food with the Gentiles: but when they came, he went back and made himself separate, fearing those who were of the circumcision.

13 And the rest of the Jews went after him, so that even Barnabas was overcome by their false ways.

14 But when I saw that they were not living uprightly in agreement with the true words of the good news, I said to Cephas before them all, If you, being a Jew, are living like the Gentiles, and not like the Jews, how will you make the Gentiles do the same as the Jews?

15 We being Jews by birth, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

16 Being conscious that a man does not get righteousness by the works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ, we had faith in Christ Jesus, so that we might get righteousness by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law: because by the works of the law will no flesh get righteousness.

17 But if, while we were desiring to get righteousness through Christ, we ourselves were seen to be sinners, is Christ a servant of sin? In no way!

18 For if I put up again those things which I gave to destruction, I am seen to be a wrongdoer.

19 For I, through the law, have become dead to the law, so that I might be living to God.

20 I have been put to death on the cross with Christ; still I am living; no longer I, but Christ is living in me; and that life which I now am living in the flesh I am living by faith, the faith of the Son of God, who in love for me, gave himself up for me.

21 I do not make the grace of God of no effect: because if righteousness is through the law, then Christ was put to death for nothing.
