1 Or tous les péagers et les gens de mauvaise vie s'approchaient de lui pour l'entendre.

2 Mais les Pharisiens et les Scribes murmuraient, disant : celui-ci reçoit les gens de mauvaise vie, et mange avec eux.

3 Mais il leur proposa cette parabole, disant :

4 Qui est l'homme d'entre vous qui ayant cent brebis, s'il en perd une, ne laisse les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf au désert, et ne s'en aille après celle qui est perdue, jusqu'à ce qu'il l'ait trouvée;

5 Et qui l'ayant trouvée ne la mette sur ses épaules bien joyeux;

6 Et étant de retour en sa maison, n'appelle ses amis et ses voisins, et ne leur dise : réjouissez-vous avec moi ; car j'ai trouvé ma brebis qui était perdue?

7 Je vous dis, qu'il y aura de même de la joie au ciel pour un seul pécheur qui vient à se repentir, plus que pour quatre-vingt-dix-neuf justes, qui n'ont pas besoin de repentance.

8 Ou qui est la femme qui ayant dix drachmes, si elle perd une drachme, n'allume la chandelle, et ne balaye la maison, et ne [la] cherche diligemment, jusqu'à ce qu'elle l'ait trouvée;

9 Et qui après l'avoir trouvé, n'appelle ses amis et ses voisines, en leur disant : réjouissez-vous avec moi; car j'ai trouvé la drachme que j'avais perdue?

10 Ainsi je vous dis qu'il y a de la joie devant les Anges de Dieu pour un seul pécheur qui vient à se repentir.

11 Il leur dit aussi : un homme avait deux fils;

12 Et le plus jeune dit à son père : mon père, donne-moi la part du bien qui m'appartient; et il leur partagea ses biens.

13 Et peu de jours après, quand le plus jeune fils eut tout ramassé, il s'en alla dehors en un pays éloigné; et là il dissipa son bien en vivant dans la débauche.

14 Et après qu'il eut tout dépensé, une grande famine survint en ce pays-là; et il commença d'être dans la disette.

15 Alors il s'en alla, et se mit au service d'un des habitants du pays, qui l'envoya dans ses possessions pour paître les pourceaux.

16 Et il désirait de se rassasier des gousses que les pourceaux mangeaient; mais personne ne lui en donnait.

17 Or étant revenu à lui-même, il dit : combien y a-t-il de mercenaires dans la maison de mon père, qui ont du pain en abondance, et moi je meurs de faim?

18 Je me lèverai, et je m'en irai vers mon père, et je lui dirai : mon père, j'ai péché contre le ciel et devant toi;

19 Et je ne suis plus digne d'être appelé ton fils; traite-moi comme l'un de tes mercenaires.

20 Il se leva donc, et vint vers son père; et comme il était encore loin, son père le vit, et fut touché de compassion, et courant à lui, se jeta à son cou, et le baisa.

21 Mais le fils lui dit : mon père, j'ai péché contre le ciel et devant toi; et je ne suis plus digne d'être appelé ton fils.

22 Et le père dit à ses serviteurs : apportez la plus belle robe, et l'en revêtez, mettez-lui un anneau au doigt, et des souliers aux pieds;

23 Et amenez-moi le veau gras, et le tuez, et faisons bonne chère en le mangeant.

24 Car mon fils que voici, était mort, mais il est ressuscité; il était perdu, mais il est retrouvé. Et ils commencèrent à faire bonne chère.

25 Or son fils aîné était aux champs, et comme il revenait et qu'il approchait de la maison, il entendit la mélodie et les danses.

26 Et ayant appelé un des serviteurs, il lui demanda ce que c'était.

27 Et [ce serviteur] lui dit : ton frère est venu, et ton père a tué le veau gras, parce qu'il l'a recouvré sain et sauf.

28 Mais il se mit en colère, et ne voulut point entrer; et son père étant sorti le priait [d'entrer].

29 Mais il répondit, et dit à son père : voici, il y a tant d'années que je te sers, et jamais je n'ai transgressé ton commandement, et cependant tu ne m'as jamais donné un chevreau pour faire bonne chère avec mes amis.

30 Mais quand celui-ci, ton fils, qui a mangé ton bien avec des femmes de mauvaise vie, est venu, tu lui as tué le veau gras.

31 Et [le père] lui dit : [mon] enfant, tu es toujours avec moi, et tous mes biens sont à toi.

32 Or il fallait faire bonne chère, et se réjouir, parce que celui-ci, ton frère, était mort, et il est ressuscité; il était perdu, et il est retrouvé.

1 Now all the tax-farmers and sinners came near to give ear to him.

2 And the Pharisees and scribes were angry, saying, This man gives approval to sinners, and takes food with them.

3 And he made a story for them, saying,

4 What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if one of them gets loose and goes away, will not let the ninety-nine be in the waste land by themselves, and go after the wandering one, till he sees where it is?

5 And when he has got it again, he takes it in his arms with joy.

6 And when he gets back to his house, he sends for his neighbours and friends, saying to them, Be glad with me, for I have got back my sheep which had gone away.

7 I say to you that even so there will be more joy in heaven when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing, than for ninety-nine good men, who have no need of a change of heart.

8 Or what woman, having ten bits of silver, if one bit has gone from her hands, will not get a light, and go through her house, searching with care till she sees it?

9 And when she has it again, she gets her friends and neighbours together, saying, Be glad with me, for I have got back the bit of silver which had gone from me.

10 Even so, I say to you, There is joy among the angels of God, when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing.

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:

12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me that part of your property which will be mine. And he made division of his goods between them.

13 And not long after, the younger son got together everything which was his and took a journey into a far-away country, and there all his money went in foolish living.

14 And when everything was gone, there was no food to be had in that country, and he was in need.

15 And he went and put himself into the hands of one of the people of that country, and he sent him into his fields to give the pigs their food.

16 And so great was his need that he would have been glad to take the pigs' food, and no one gave him anything.

17 But when he came to his senses, he said, What numbers of my father's servants have bread enough, and more, while I am near to death here through need of food!

18 I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have done wrong, against heaven and in your eyes:

19 I am no longer good enough to be named your son: make me like one of your servants.

20 And he got up and went to his father. But while he was still far away, his father saw him and was moved with pity for him and went quickly and took him in his arms and gave him a kiss.

21 And his son said to him, Father, I have done wrong, against heaven and in your eyes: I am no longer good enough to be named your son.

22 But the father said to his servants, Get out the first robe quickly, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet:

23 And get the fat young ox and put it to death, and let us have a feast, and be glad.

24 For this, my son, who was dead, is living again; he had gone away from me, and has come back. And they were full of joy.

25 Now the older son was in the field: and when he came near the house, the sounds of music and dancing came to his ears.

26 And he sent for one of the servants, questioning him about what it might be.

27 And he said to him, Your brother has come; and your father has had the young ox put to death because he has come back safely.

28 But he was angry and would not go in; and his father came out and made a request to him to come in.

29 But he made answer and said to his father, See, all these years I have been your servant, doing your orders in everything: and you never gave me even a young goat so that I might have a feast with my friends:

30 But when this your son came, who has been wasting your property with bad women, you put to death the fat young ox for him.

31 And he said to him, Son, you are with me at all times, and all I have is yours.

32 But it was right to be glad and to have a feast; for this your brother, who was dead, is living again; he had gone away and has come back.
