1 Or il arriva un an après, lorsque les Rois sortent [à la guerre], que David envoya Joab, et avec lui ses serviteurs, et tout Israël, et ils détruisirent les enfants de Hammon, et assiégèrent Rabba; mais David demeura à Jérusalem.
2 Et sur le soir il arriva que David se leva de dessus son lit, et comme il se promenait sur la plateforme de l'hôtel Royal, il vit de dessus cette plateforme une femme qui se lavait, et cette femme-là était fort belle à voir.
3 Et David envoya s'informer de cette femme-là, et on lui dit : N'est-ce pas là Bath-sebah fille d'Eliham, femme d'Urie le Héthien?
4 Et David envoya des messagers, et l'enleva; et étant venue vers lui, il coucha avec elle; car elle était nettoyée de sa souillure; puis elle s'en retourna en sa maison.
5 Et cette femme conçut; et elle envoya le faire savoir à David, en disant : Je suis enceinte.
6 Alors David envoya dire à Joab : Envoie-moi Urie le Héthien; et Joab envoya Urie à David.
7 Et Urie vint à lui; et David lui demanda comment se portait Joab, et le peuple, et comment il en allait de la guerre.
8 Puis David dit à Urie : Descends en ta maison, et lave tes pieds. Et Urie sortit de la maison du Roi, et on porta après lui un présent Royal.
9 Mais Urie dormit à la porte de la maison du Roi, avec tous les serviteurs de son Seigneur, et ne descendit point en sa maison.
10 Et on le rapporta à David, et on lui dit : Urie n'est point descendu en sa maison. Et David dit à Urie : Ne viens-tu pas de voyage? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas descendu en ta maison?
11 Et Urie répondit à David : L'Arche, et Israël, et Juda logent sous des tentes; Monseigneur Joab aussi, et les serviteurs de mon Seigneur campent aux champs; et moi entrerais-je dans ma maison pour manger et boire, et pour coucher avec ma femme? Tu es vivant, et ton âme vit, si je fais une telle chose.
12 Et David dit à Urie : Demeure ici encore aujourd'hui, et demain je te renverrai. Urie donc demeura [encore] ce jour-là et le lendemain à Jérusalem.
13 Puis David l'appela, et il mangea et but devant lui, et David l'enivra; et néanmoins il sortit au soir pour dormir dans son lit avec tous les serviteurs de son Seigneur, et ne descendit point en sa maison.
14 Et le lendemain au matin David écrivit des lettres à Joab, et les envoya par les mains d'Urie.
15 Et il écrivit ces lettres en ces termes : Mettez Urie à l'endroit où sera le plus fort de la bataille, et retirez-vous d'auprès de lui, afin qu'il soit frappé, et qu'il meure.
16 Après donc que Joab eut considéré la ville, il mit Urie à l'endroit où il savait que seraient les plus vaillants hommes.
17 Et ceux de la ville sortirent et combattirent contre Joab, et quelques-uns du peuple [qui étaient] des serviteurs de David moururent; Urie le Héthien mourut aussi.
18 Alors Joab envoya à David pour lui faire savoir tout ce qui était arrivé dans ce combat.
19 Et il commanda au messager, disant : Quand tu auras achevé de parler au Roi de tout ce qui est arrivé au combat,
20 S'il arrive que le Roi se mette en colère et qu'il te dise : Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés de la ville pour combattre, ne savez-vous pas bien qu'on jette toujours quelque chose de dessus la muraille?
21 Qu'est-ce qui tua Abimélec fils de Jérubbeseth? ne fut-ce pas une pièce de meule qu'une femme jeta sur lui de dessus la muraille, dont il mourut à Tébets? Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés de la muraille? Tu lui diras : Ton serviteur Urie le Héthien y est mort aussi.
22 Ainsi le messager partit, et étant arrivé il fit savoir à David tout ce pourquoi Joab l'avait envoyé.
23 Et le messager dit à David : Ils ont été plus forts que nous, et sont sortis contre nous aux champs, mais nous les avons repoussés jusqu'à l'entrée de la porte;
24 Et les archers ont tiré contre tes serviteurs de dessus la muraille, et quelques-uns des serviteurs du Roi sont morts ; ton serviteur Urie le Héthien est mort aussi.
25 Et David dit au messager : Tu diras ainsi à Joab : Ne t'inquiète point de cela; car l'épée emporte autant l'un que l'autre; redouble le combat contre la ville, et détruis-la; et toi donne-lui courage.
26 Et la femme d'Urie apprit qu'Urie son mari était mort, et elle fit le deuil de son mari.
27 Et après que le deuil fut passé, David envoya, et la retira dans sa maison, et elle lui fut pour femme, et lui enfanta un fils; mais ce que David avait fait déplut à l'Eternel.
1 And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
2 And it came to pass in an evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
6 And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.
8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to your house, and wash your feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Came you not from your journey? why then did you not go down unto your house?
11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.
12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire from him, that he may be struck down, and die.
16 And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.
17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
19 And charged the messenger, saying, When you have finished telling the matters of the war unto the king,
20 And if so be that the king’s anger arises, and he says unto you, Why approached you so near unto the city when you did fight? knew you not that they would shoot from the wall?
21 Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went you near the wall? then say, Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
22 So the messenger went, and came and told David all that Joab had sent him for.
23 And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entrance of the gate.
24 And the shooters shot from off the wall upon your servants; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
25 Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shall you say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another: make your battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and so encourage him.
26 And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
