1 Je me tenais en sentinelle, j'étais debout dans la forteresse, et faisais le guet, pour voir ce qui me serait dit, et ce que je répondrais sur ma plainte.

2 Et l'Eternel m'a répondu, et m'a dit : Ecris la vision, et l'exprime lisiblement sur des tablettes, afin qu'on la lise couramment.

3 Car la vision [est] encore [différée] jusqu'à un certain temps, et [l'Eternel] parlera de ce qui arrivera à la fin, et il ne mentira point; s'il tarde, attends-le, car il ne manquera point de venir, et il ne tardera point.

4 Voici, l'âme qui s'élève [en quelqu'un] n'est point droite en lui; mais le juste vivra de sa foi.

5 Et combien plus l'homme adonné au vin est-il prévaricateur, et l'homme puissant est-il orgueilleux, ne se tenant point tranquille chez soi; qui élargit son âme comme le sépulcre, et qui est insatiable comme la mort, il amasse vers lui toutes les nations, et réunit à soi tous les peuples?

6 Tous ceux-là ne feront-ils pas de lui un sujet de raillerie et de sentences énigmatiques? Et ne dira-t-on pas : Malheur à celui qui assemble ce qui ne lui appartient point; jusqu'à quand le [fera t-il], et entassera-t-il sur soi de la boue épaisse?

7 N'y en aura-t-il point qui tout incontinent s'élèveront pour te mordre? Et ne s'en réveillera-t-il point qui te feront courir çà et là, et à qui tu seras en pillage?

8 Parce que tu as butiné plusieurs nations, tout le reste des peuples te butinera, et à cause aussi des meurtres des hommes, et de la violence [faite] au pays, à la ville, et à tous ses habitants.

9 Malheur à celui qui cherche à faire un gain injuste pour établir sa maison; afin de placer son nid en haut pour être délivré de la griffe du malin.

10 Tu as pris un conseil de confusion pour ta maison en consumant beaucoup de peuples, et tu as péché contre toi-même.

11 Car la pierre criera de la paroi, et les nœuds qui sont dans les poutres lui répondront.

12 Malheur à celui qui cimente la ville avec le sang, et qui fonde la ville sur l'iniquité.

13 Voici, n'[est]-ce pas de par l'Eternel des armées que les peuples travaillent pour en nourrir abondamment le feu, et que les nations se fatiguent très inutilement?

14 Mais la terre sera remplie de la connaissance de la gloire de l'Eternel, comme les eaux comblent la mer.

15 Malheur à celui qui fait boire son compagnon en lui approchant sa bouteille, et même l'enivrant, afin qu'on voie leur nudité.

16 Tu auras encore plus de déshonneur, que tu n'as eu de gloire; toi aussi bois, et montre ton opprobre; la coupe de la dextre de l'Eternel fera le tour parmi toi, et l'ignominie sera répandue sur ta gloire.

17 Car la violence [faite] au Liban te couvrira; et le dégât fait par les grosses bêtes les rendra tout étonnés, à cause des meurtres des hommes, et de la violence [faite] au pays, à la ville, et à tous ses habitants.

18 De quoi sert l'image taillée que son ouvrier l'ait taillée? Ce [n'est que] fonte, et qu'un docteur de mensonge; [de quoi sert-elle], pour que l'ouvrier qui fait des idoles muettes se fie en son ouvrage?

19 Malheur à ceux qui disent au bois, réveille-toi; [et] à la pierre muette, réveille-toi; enseignera-t-elle? Voici, elle [est] couverte d'or et d'argent, et toutefois il n'y a aucun esprit au-dedans.

20 Mais l'Eternel est au Temple de sa sainteté; toute la terre, tais-toi, redoutant sa présence.

1 I will stand upon my watch, and set myself upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.

2 And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, so he may run that reads it.

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not delay.

4 Behold, his soul which is proud is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

5 Yea also, because he transgresses by wine, he is a proud man, neither keeps at home, who enlarges his desire as sheol, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathers unto him all nations, and heaps unto him all people:

6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increases that which is not his! how long? and to him that loads himself with many pledges!

7 Shall they not rise up suddenly that are your creditors, and awake that shall oppress you, and you shall be for booty unto them?

8 Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the people shall plunder you; because of bloodshed, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell in it.

9 Woe to him that covets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of ruin!

10 You have plotted shame to your house by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul.

11 For the stone shall cry out from the wall, and the beam from the timber shall answer it.

12 Woe to him that builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!

13 Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labor to feed the fire, and the people shall weary themselves in vain?

14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

15 Woe unto him that gives his neighbor drink, that presses your wineskin to him, and makes him drunk also, that you may look on his nakedness!

16 You are filled with shame instead of glory: drink you also, and let your shame be exposed: the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned against you, and utter shame shall be upon your glory.

17 For the violence done to Lebanon shall cover you, and the plunder of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, and of the city, and of all that dwell in it.

18 What profits the graven image that its maker has shaped it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusts in it, to make dumb idols?

19 Woe unto him that says to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it.

20 But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.
