1 Quand le Cananéen Roi de Harad, qui habitait au Midi, eut appris qu'Israël venait par le chemin des espions, il combattit contre Israël, et en emmena des prisonniers.
2 Alors Israël fit un vœu à l'Eternel, en disant : Si tu livres ce peuple entre mes mains, je mettrai ses villes à l'interdit.
3 Et l'Eternel exauça la voix d'Israël, et livra [entre ses mains] les Cananéens, lesquels il détruisit à la façon de l'interdit, avec leurs villes; et on nomma ce lieu-là Horma.
4 Puis ils partirent de la montagne de Hor, tirant vers la mer Rouge, pour environner le pays d'Edom, et le cœur manqua au peuple par le chemin.
5 Le peuple donc parla contre Dieu, et contre Moïse, [en disant] : Pourquoi nous as-tu fait monter hors de l'Egypte, pour mourir dans ce désert? car il n y a point de pain, ni d'eau, et notre âme est ennuyée de ce pain si léger.
6 Et l'Eternel envoya sur le peuple des serpents brûlants qui mordaient le peuple; tellement qu'il en mourut un grand nombre de ceux d'Israël.
7 Alors le peuple vint vers Moïse, et dit : Nous avons péché, car nous avons parlé contre l'Eternel, et contre toi; invoque l'Eternel, et qu'il retire de dessus nous les serpents. Et Moïse pria pour le peuple.
8 Et l'Eternel dit à Moïse : Fais-toi un serpent brûlant, et mets-le sur une perche; et il arrivera que quiconque sera mordu, et le regardera, sera guéri.
9 Moïse donc fit un serpent d'airain, et le mit sur une perche; et il arrivait que quand quelque serpent avait mordu un homme, il regardait le serpent d'airain, et il était guéri.
10 Depuis, les enfants d'Israël partirent, et campèrent en Oboth.
11 Et étant partis d'Oboth, ils campèrent en Hijé-habarim, au désert qui est vis-à-vis de Moab, vers le soleil levant.
12 Puis étant partis de là, ils campèrent vers le torrent de Zéred.
13 Et étant partis de là, ils campèrent au deçà d'Arnon, qui est au désert, sortant des confins de l'Amorrhéen; car Arnon est la frontière de Moab, entre les Moabites et les Amorrhéens.
14 C'est pourquoi il est dit au Livre des batailles de l'Eternel : Vaheb en Suphah, et les torrents en Arnon.
15 Et le cours des torrents qui tend vers le lieu où Har est située, et qui se rend aux frontières de Moab.
16 Et de là ils vinrent en Béer; c'est le puits touchant lequel l'Eternel dit à Moïse : Assemble le peuple, et je leur donnerai de l'eau.
17 Alors Israël chanta ce Cantique : Monte, puits; chantez de lui en vous répondant les uns aux autres.
18 C'est le puits que les Seigneurs ont creusé, que les principaux du peuple avec le Législateur ont creusé de leurs bâtons. Et du désert [ils vinrent] en Mattana.
19 Et de Mattana en Nahaliel; et de Nahaliel en Bamoth.
20 Et de Bamoth en la vallée qui est au territoire de Moab, au sommet de Pisga, et qui regarde vers Jésimon.
21 Puis Israël envoya des ambassadeurs à Sihon, Roi des Amorrhéens, [pour lui] dire :
22 Que je passe par ton pays; nous ne nous détournerons point dans les champs, ni dans les vignes, et nous ne boirons point des eaux de tes puits; mais nous marcherons par le chemin royal, jusqu'à ce que nous ayons passé tes limites.
23 Mais Sihon ne permit point qu'Israël passât par ses terres; et il assembla tout son peuple, et sortit contre Israël au désert, et vint jusqu'en Jahats, et il combattit contre Israël.
24 Mais Israël le fit passer au fil de l'épée, et conquit son pays, depuis Arnon jusqu'à Jabbok, [et] jusqu'aux enfants de Hammon; car la frontière des enfants de Hammon était forte.
25 Et Israël prit toutes les villes qui étaient là, et habita dans toutes les villes des Amorrhéens, à Hesbon, et dans toutes les villes de son ressort.
26 Or Hesbon était la ville de Sihon, Roi des Amorrhéens, qui avait le premier fait la guerre au Roi de Moab, et avait pris sur lui tout son pays jusqu'à Arnon.
27 C'est pourquoi on dit en proverbe : Venez à Hesbon. Que la ville de Sihon soit bâtie, et réparée.
28 Car le feu est sorti de Hesbon, et la flamme de la cité de Sihon; elle a consumé Har des Moabites, [et] les Seigneurs de Bamoth à Arnon.
29 Malheur à toi, Moab; peuple de Kémos, tu es perdu; il a livré ses fils qui se sauvaient et ses filles en captivité à Sihon, Roi des Amorrhéens.
30 Nous les avons défaits à coups de flèches. Hesbon est périe jusqu'à Dibon; nous les avons mis en déroute jusqu'en Nophah, qui atteint jusqu'à Médéba.
31 Israël donc habita en la terre des Amorrhéens.
32 Puis Moïse ayant envoyé des gens pour reconnaître Jahzer, ils prirent les villes de son ressort, et en dépossédèrent les Amorrhéens qui y étaient.
33 Ensuite ils se tournèrent, et montèrent par le chemin de Basan; et Hog, Roi de Basan, sortit lui et tout son peuple en bataille pour les rencontrer en Edréhi.
34 Et l'Eternel dit à Moïse : Ne le crains point; car je l'ai livré entre tes mains, lui, et tout son peuple, et son pays; et tu lui feras comme tu as fait à Sihon, Roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait à Hesbon.
35 Ils le battirent donc, lui et ses enfants, et tout son peuple, tellement qu'il n'en demeura pas un seul de reste; et ils possédèrent son pays.
1 And when king Arad the Canaanite, who dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the road to Atharim; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.
2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.
4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Sea of Reeds, to go around the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was greatly discouraged because of the way.
5 And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loathes this worthless bread.
6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against you; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make you a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looks upon it, shall live.
9 And Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of bronze, he lived.
10 And the children of Israel set out, and encamped in Oboth.
11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iye Abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, toward the sun rising.
12 From there they moved, and encamped in the valley of Zared.
13 From there they moved, and encamped on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red Sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,
15 And at the stream of the brooks that goes down to the dwelling of Ar, and lies upon the border of Moab.
16 And from there they went to Beer: that is the well of which the LORD spoke unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.
17 Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing you unto it:
18 The princes dug the well, the nobles of the people dug it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:
19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:
20 And from Bamoth in the valley that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks toward the wasteland.
21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
22 Let me pass through your land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king's highway, until we are past your borders.
23 And Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
24 And Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was fortified.
25 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.
26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.
27 Therefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and established:
28 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it has consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.
29 Woe to you, Moab! you are undone, O people of Chemosh: he has given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.
30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reaches unto Medeba.
31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.
33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
34 And the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him asyou did unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.
35 So they struck him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left of him alive: and they possessed his land.
