1 No vigésimo terceiro ano do reinado de Joás, filho de Acazias, rei de Judá, Jeoacaz, filho de Jeú, começou a reinar sobre Israel, em Samaria, e reinou dezessete anos. 2 Jeoacaz fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor e andou nos pecados de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, que este levou Israel a cometer; não se afastou deles. 3 Por isso a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra Israel, e ele os entregou nas mãos de Hazael, rei da Síria, e nas mãos de Ben-Hadade, filho de Hazael, todos aqueles dias. 4 Porém Jeoacaz fez súplicas diante do Senhor, e o Senhor o ouviu, pois viu a opressão com que o rei da Síria atormentava Israel. 5 O Senhor deu um salvador a Israel, de modo que os filhos de Israel se livraram do poder dos sírios e puderam morar, de novo, em suas casas, como antes. 6 Contudo, não se afastaram dos pecados da casa de Jeroboão, que este levou Israel a cometer, mas andaram neles; e também o poste da deusa Aserá permaneceu em Samaria. 7 Do exército de Jeoacaz só restaram cinquenta cavaleiros, dez carros de guerra e dez mil soldados de infantaria, porque o rei da Síria havia destruído os demais, reduzindo-os a pó.

8 Quanto aos demais atos de Jeoacaz, a tudo o que fez e ao seu poder, não está tudo escrito no Livro da História dos Reis de Israel? 9 Jeoacaz morreu e foi sepultado em Samaria. E Jeoás, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar.

10 No trigésimo sétimo ano do reinado de Joás, rei de Judá, Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, começou a reinar sobre Israel, em Samaria; e reinou dezesseis anos. 11 Fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor. Não se afastou de nenhum dos pecados de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, que este levou Israel a cometer; porém andou neles.

12 Quanto aos demais atos de Jeoás, a tudo o que fez e ao seu poder, com que lutou contra Amazias, rei de Judá, não está tudo escrito no Livro da História dos Reis de Israel? 13 Jeoás morreu, e no seu trono se assentou Jeroboão. Jeoás foi sepultado em Samaria, junto aos reis de Israel.

14 Quando Eliseu estava sofrendo da enfermidade da qual viria a morrer, Jeoás, rei de Israel, foi visitá-lo. Chorou diante dele e disse:

— Meu pai, meu pai! Carros de Israel e seus cavaleiros!

15 Então Eliseu disse ao rei:

— Pegue um arco e algumas flechas.

Jeoás pegou o arco e as flechas. 16 Eliseu disse ao rei de Israel:

— Empunhe o arco.

O rei fez assim. Então Eliseu pôs as mãos sobre as mãos do rei 17 e disse:

— Abra a janela que dá para o leste.

O rei a abriu. Eliseu continuou:

— Atire!

E o rei atirou. Então Eliseu disse:

— Flecha da vitória do Senhor! Flecha da vitória contra os sírios! Você vencerá os sírios em Afeca, até acabar com eles.

18 Eliseu disse mais:

— Pegue as flechas.

Ele as pegou. Então disse ao rei de Israel:

— Atire contra o chão.

O rei fez isso três vezes e parou. 19 Então o homem de Deus ficou indignado com ele e disse:

— Você deveria ter atirado cinco ou seis vezes e assim venceria os sírios até acabar com eles; mas agora vai vencê-los só três vezes.

20 Eliseu morreu, e o sepultaram. Ora, bandos dos moabitas costumavam invadir a terra, no começo do ano. 21 Aconteceu que, enquanto alguns sepultavam um homem, eis que viram um desses bandos. Então jogaram o homem na sepultura de Eliseu e fugiram. Quando o cadáver tocou nos ossos de Eliseu, o homem reviveu e se levantou sobre os pés.

22 Hazael, rei da Síria, oprimiu Israel durante todo o reinado de Jeoacaz. 23 Porém o Senhor teve misericórdia de Israel, se compadeceu deles e voltou-se para eles, por amor da aliança com Abraão, Isaque e Jacó; e não quis destruí-los e, até agora, ainda não os expulsou da sua presença.

24 Hazael, rei da Síria, morreu, e Ben-Hadade, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar. 25 Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, retomou das mãos de Ben-Hadade as cidades que, na guerra, este havia tomado de Jeoacaz, seu pai. Três vezes Jeoás o derrotou e recuperou as cidades de Israel.

1 In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] seventeen years.2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. He did not depart from it.3 And the anger of LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, continually.4 And Jehoahaz besought LORD, and LORD hearkened to him, for he saw the oppression of Israel, how that the king of Syria oppressed them.5 (And LORD gave Israel a savior, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians, and the sons of Israel dwelt in their tents as beforetime.6 Nevertheless they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin, but walked therein. And the Asherah also remained in Samaria.)7 For he did not leave to Jehoahaz of the people except fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen, for the king of Syria destroyed them, and made them like the dust in threshing.8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?9 And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And Joash his son reigned in his stead.10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz began to reign over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] sixteen years.11 And he did that which was evil in the sight of LORD. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin, but he walked therein.12 Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?13 And Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam sat upon his throne. And Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.14 Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness of which he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down to him, and wept over him, and said, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen of it!15 And Elisha said to him, Take bow and arrows. And he took to him bow and arrows.16 And he said to the king of Israel, Put thy hand upon the bow. And he put his hand [upon it]. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king's hands.17 And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, LORD's arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Syria, for thou shall smite the Syrians in Aphek till thou have con18 And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stopped.19 And the man of God was angry with him, and said, Thou should have smitten five or six times. Then thou would have smitten Syria till thou had consumed it, whereas now thou shall smite Syria but thrice.20 And Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.21 And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band, and they cast the man into the sepulcher of Elisha. And as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.22 And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.23 But LORD was gracious to them, and had compassion on them, and had respect to them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither did he cast them from his presence as yet.24 And Hazael king of Syria died, and Benhadad his son reigned in his stead.25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz again took out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities, which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times Joash smote him, and recovered the cities of Israel.
