1 No terceiro ano do reinado de Oseias, filho de Elá, rei de Israel, Ezequias, filho de Acaz, rei de Judá, começou a reinar. 2 Tinha vinte e cinco anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Abi e era filha de Zacarias. 3 Ezequias fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, segundo tudo o que Davi, seu pai, havia feito. 4 Removeu os lugares altos, quebrou as colunas e derrubou o poste da deusa Aserá. Também fez em pedaços a serpente de bronze que Moisés havia feito. Os filhos de Israel chamavam essa serpente de Neustã e até aquele dia lhe queimavam incenso.

5 Ezequias confiou no Senhor, Deus de Israel, de maneira que não houve ninguém como ele entre todos os reis de Judá, nem antes nem depois dele. 6 Porque se apegou ao Senhor, não deixou de segui-lo e guardou os mandamentos que o Senhor ordenou a Moisés. 7 Assim, o Senhor estava com ele, e ele teve êxito em todos os seus empreendimentos. Rebelou-se contra o rei da Assíria e não o serviu. 8 Derrotou os filisteus até Gaza e o seu território, desde a torre dos vigias até a cidade fortificada.

9 No quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, que era o sétimo ano do reinado de Oseias, filho de Elá, rei de Israel, Salmaneser, rei da Assíria, atacou a cidade de Samaria e a cercou. 10 Ao fim de três anos, a cidade foi conquistada. Sim, no ano sexto do reinado de Ezequias, que era o nono ano do reinado de Oseias, rei de Israel, Samaria foi conquistada. 11 O rei da Assíria levou os israelitas para a Assíria e os fez habitar em Hala, junto a Habor, rio de Gozã, e nas cidades dos medos. 12 Isso aconteceu porque não obedeceram à voz do Senhor, seu Deus, mas quebraram a sua aliança, a saber, tudo o que Moisés, servo do Senhor, havia ordenado; não o ouviram, nem o fizeram.

13 No décimo quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, atacou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e as conquistou. 14 Então Ezequias, rei de Judá, enviou mensageiros ao rei da Assíria, que estava em Laquis, dizendo:

— Eu errei. Pare de me atacar, e cumprirei tudo o que você me impuser.

Então o rei da Assíria impôs a Ezequias, rei de Judá, um tributo de dez toneladas de prata e uma tonelada de ouro. 15 Ezequias deu toda a prata que havia na Casa do Senhor e nos tesouros do palácio real. 16 Foi quando Ezequias arrancou o ouro que havia nas portas do templo do Senhor e nas ombreiras, o ouro com que ele, o rei de Judá, as havia revestido, e o deu ao rei da Assíria. 17 Mas o rei da Assíria, que estava em Laquis, enviou Tartã, Rabe-Saris e Rabsaqué, com um grande exército, ao rei Ezequias, em Jerusalém. Eles vieram a Jerusalém e, quando chegaram, pararam na extremidade do aqueduto do tanque superior, junto ao caminho do campo do Lavandeiro. 18 Mandaram chamar o rei, e quem saiu ao encontro deles foram Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o responsável pelo palácio, Sebna, o escrivão, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o cronista.

19 Rabsaqué disse:

— Digam a Ezequias: Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: "Que confiança é essa que você tem? 20 Bem posso dizer que o seu conselho e o seu poder para a guerra são meras palavras. Em quem você está confiando agora, para que se rebele contra mim? 21 Você confia nesse bordão de caniço esmagado que é o Egito. Se alguém se apoiar no caniço, ele vai espetar e furar a mão. Assim é Faraó, rei do Egito, para todos os que nele confiam. 22 Mas, se vocês me dizem: ‘Confiamos no Senhor, nosso Deus’, eu pergunto: não é esse aquele cujos lugares altos e altares Ezequias removeu, dizendo a Judá e a Jerusalém que deveriam adorar somente diante do altar em Jerusalém? 23 Agora, pois, comprometa-se com meu senhor, o rei da Assíria, e eu lhe darei dois mil cavalos, se você puder achar cavaleiros para montá-los. 24 Como você poderia repelir um oficial do meu senhor, o rei, mesmo que seja um dos menores, e confiar no Egito para obter carros de guerra e cavaleiros? 25 Será que você pensa que é sem o consentimento do Senhor Deus que eu vim contra este lugar, para o destruir? Foi o próprio Senhor quem ordenou que eu atacasse esta terra e a destruísse."

26 Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, Sebna e Joá disseram a Rabsaqué:

— Por favor, fale com estes seus servos em aramaico, porque nós o entendemos. Não fale em hebraico, aos ouvidos do povo que está sobre a muralha.

27 Mas Rabsaqué lhes respondeu:

— Você pensa que o meu senhor me enviou para dizer estas palavras apenas a você e ao seu rei? Ele me enviou para falar também aos homens que estão sentados sobre a muralha e que, junto com vocês, terão de comer o seu próprio excremento e beber a sua própria urina!

28 Então Rabsaqué se pôs em pé e gritou em hebraico:

— Escutem as palavras do grande rei, o rei da Assíria. 29 Assim diz o rei: "Não deixem que Ezequias os engane, pois ele não poderá livrá-los da minha mão. 30 Não deixem que Ezequias os leve a confiar no Senhor, dizendo: ‘O Senhor certamente nos livrará, e esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria.’ 31 Não deem ouvidos a Ezequias. Porque assim diz o rei da Assíria: ‘Façam as pazes comigo e se entreguem. Então cada um comerá da sua própria videira e da sua própria figueira, e beberá a água da sua própria cisterna, 32 até que eu venha e os leve para uma terra como a de vocês, terra de cereal e de vinho, terra de pão e de vinhas, terra de oliveiras e de mel, para que vocês vivam e não morram.’ Não deem ouvidos a Ezequias, porque ele está enganando vocês, ao dizer: ‘O Senhor nos livrará.’ 33 Será que os deuses das nações puderam livrar, cada um a sua terra, das mãos do rei da Assíria? 34 Onde estão os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim, Hena e Iva? Será que eles livraram Samaria das minhas mãos? 35 De todos os deuses destes países, quais foram os que livraram a sua terra das minhas mãos? Então como o Senhor poderá livrar Jerusalém das minhas mãos?"

36 O povo ficou calado e não lhe respondeu palavra, porque assim lhe havia ordenado o rei: "Não lhe respondam." 37 Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o responsável pelo palácio, e Sebna, o escrivão, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o cronista, voltaram para junto do rei Ezequias, com as suas roupas rasgadas, e lhe contaram o que Rabsaqué tinha dito.

1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.2 He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.3 And he did that which was right in the eyes of LORD, according to all that David his father had done.4 He removed the high places, and broke the pillars, and cut down the Asherah, and he broke in pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made. For to those days the sons of Israel burned incense to it, and he called it Nehushtan.5 He trusted in LORD, the God of Israel, so that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah after him, nor [among those] who were before him.6 For he clung to LORD. He did not depart from following him, but kept his commandments, which LORD commanded Moses.7 And LORD was with him. Wherever he went forth he prospered. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and did not serve him.8 He smote the Philistines to Gaza and the borders of it, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.9 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.10 And at the end of three years they took it. Samaria was taken in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel.11 And the king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,12 because they did not obey the voice of LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of LORD commanded, and would not hear it, nor do it.13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended. Return from me. That which thou put on me I will bear. And the king of Assyria appointed to Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of15 And Hezekiah gave [him] all the silver that was found in the house of LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house.16 At that time Hezekiah cut off [the gold from] the doors of the temple of LORD, and [from] the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rab-saris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army to Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they came up, they came and stood by the conduit of the18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebnah the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.19 And Rabshakeh said to them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this in which thou trust?20 Thou say (but they are but vain words), [There is] counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom do thou trust that thou have rebelled against me?21 Now, behold, thou trust upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man leans it will go into his hand, and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust on him.22 But if ye say to me, We trust in LORD our God, is that not he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.24 How then can thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?25 Have I now come up without LORD against this place to destroy it? LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.26 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah, and Joah, said to Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language, for we understand it. And do not speak with us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people27 But Rabshakeh said to them, Has my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? [Has he] not [sent me] to the men who sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own urine with you?28 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spoke, saying, Hear ye the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.29 Thus says the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you out of his hand.30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in LORD, saying, LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.31 Do not hearken to Hezekiah. For thus says the king of Assyria, Make your peace with me, and come out to me. And eat ye every man of his vine, and every man of his fig tree, and drink ye every man the waters of his own cistern,32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and of honey, that ye may live, and not die. And do not hearken to Hezekiah when he per33 Have any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?36 But the people were silent, and did not answer him a word, for the king's commandment was, saying, Do not answer him.37 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
