1 Mais uma vez a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra os israelitas, e ele incitou Davi contra eles, dizendo:

— Vá e levante o censo de Israel e de Judá.

2 O rei disse a Joabe, comandante do seu exército:

— Percorra todas as tribos de Israel, desde Dã até Berseba, e levante o censo do povo, para que eu saiba o seu número.

3 Então Joabe disse ao rei:

— Que o Senhor, seu Deus, multiplique este povo cem vezes mais, e que o rei, meu senhor, o veja! Mas por que o rei, meu senhor, quer fazer uma coisa dessas?

4 Porém a palavra do rei prevaleceu contra Joabe e contra os chefes do exército. Então eles saíram da presença do rei, para levantar o censo do povo de Israel. 5 Passaram o Jordão e acamparam em Aroer, à direita da cidade que está no meio do vale de Gade, e foram a Jazer. 6 Dali foram a Gileade e chegaram até Cades, na terra dos heteus. Seguiram a Dã-Jaã e viraram-se para Sidom. 7 Chegaram à fortaleza de Tiro e a todas as cidades dos heveus e dos cananeus, de onde saíram para o Sul de Judá, a Berseba. 8 Assim, percorreram toda a terra e, depois de nove meses e vinte dias, chegaram a Jerusalém. 9 Joabe apresentou ao rei o resultado do recenseamento do povo: havia em Israel oitocentos mil homens de guerra, que puxavam da espada; e em Judá eram quinhentos mil.

10 Depois de haver recenseado o povo, Davi ficou com dor no coração. Ele disse ao Senhor:

— Cometi um grande pecado ao fazer o que fiz. Mas agora, ó Senhor, peço-te que perdoes a iniquidade do teu servo, porque fiz uma grande loucura.

11 Quando Davi se levantou pela manhã, a palavra do Senhor veio ao profeta Gade, vidente de Davi, dizendo:

12 — Vá e diga a Davi: Assim diz o Senhor: "Eu lhe ofereço três opções; escolha uma delas, para que eu a execute contra você."

13 Gade foi falar com Davi e lhe comunicou isso, dizendo:

— Você quer sete anos de fome na sua terra, três meses fugindo dos seus inimigos, que vão persegui-lo, ou três dias de peste na sua terra? Decida, agora, e diga que resposta devo dar ao que me enviou.

14 Então Davi disse a Gade:

— Estou muito angustiado. Porém é preferível que caiamos nas mãos do Senhor, porque muitas são as suas misericórdias; não quero cair nas mãos dos homens.

15 Então o Senhor enviou a peste a Israel, desde a manhã até o tempo que havia determinado. E, desde Dã até Berseba, morreram setenta mil homens do povo. 16 Quando o Anjo do Senhor estendeu a mão sobre Jerusalém, para a destruir, o Senhor mudou de ideia quanto a este mal e disse ao Anjo que fazia a destruição entre o povo:

— Basta! Retire a sua mão.

O Anjo estava junto à eira de Araúna, o jebuseu. 17 Ao ver o Anjo que feria o povo, Davi falou ao Senhor e disse:

— Eu é que pequei. Eu é que fiz essa perversidade. Mas estas ovelhas o que fizeram? Que a tua mão seja contra mim e contra a casa de meu pai.

18 Naquele mesmo dia, Gade foi falar com Davi e lhe disse:

— Vá e edifique um altar ao Senhor na eira de Araúna, o jebuseu.

19 Davi foi segundo a palavra de Gade, como o Senhor lhe havia ordenado. 20 Araúna viu, do alto, que o rei e os seus homens vinham ao seu encontro. Saiu e se inclinou diante do rei, com o rosto em terra. 21 E perguntou:

— Por que o rei, meu senhor, vem até este seu servo?

Davi respondeu:

— Para comprar de você esta eira, a fim de edificar nela um altar ao Senhor, para que cesse a praga no meio do povo.

22 Então Araúna disse a Davi:

— Que o rei, meu senhor, tome e ofereça o que bem quiser. Aqui estão os bois para o holocausto, o debulhador de cereais e a canga dos bois para a lenha. 23 Tudo isto, ó rei, Araúna oferece ao rei.

E acrescentou:

— Que o Senhor, seu Deus, aceite a sua oferta.

24 Porém o rei disse a Araúna:

— Não! Eu vou comprar de você pelo que vale. Porque não oferecerei ao Senhor, meu Deus, holocaustos que não me custem nada.

Assim, Davi comprou a eira e os bois por cinquenta moedas de prata. 25 Davi edificou ali um altar ao Senhor e apresentou holocaustos e ofertas pacíficas. Assim, o Senhor se tornou favorável para com a terra, e a praga cessou no meio de Israel.

1 And again the anger of LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.2 And the king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.3 And Joab said to the king, Now LORD thy God add to the people, however many they may be, a hundredfold, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it, but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?4 Notwithstanding, the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. And Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people of Israel.5 And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and to Jazer.6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi. And they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Sidon,7 and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites. And they went out to the south of Judah, at Beersheba.8 So when they had gone to and from through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.9 And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to the king. And there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.10 And David's heart smote him after he had numbered the people. And David said to LORD, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done, but now, O LORD, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant, for I have done very foo11 And when David rose up in the morning, the word of LORD came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,12 Go and speak to David, Thus says LORD, I offer thee three things. Choose thee one of them, that I may do it to thee.13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, Shall seven years of famine come to thee in thy land? Or will thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? Or shall there be three days' pestilence in thy land?14 And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait. Let us fall now into the hand of LORD, for his mercies are great, and let me not fall into the hand of man.15 So LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed. And there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.16 And when the [heavenly] agent stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, LORD relented of the evil, and said to the agent who destroyed the people, It is enough. Now stay thy hand. And the agent of LORD was by the thres17 And David spoke to LORD when he saw the agent who smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely, but these sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's ho18 And Gad came that day to David, and said to him, Go up, rear an altar to LORD in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.19 And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as LORD commanded.20 And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. And Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.21 And Araunah said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor from thee, to build an altar to LORD that the plague may be halted from the people.22 And Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood.23 All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king. And Araunah said to the king, LORD thy God accept thee.24 And the king said to Araunah, No, but I will truly buy it from thee at a price. Neither will I offer burnt-offerings to LORD my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver25 And David built there an altar to LORD, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was halted from Israel.
