1 Joabe, filho de Zeruia, vendo que o coração do rei começava a inclinar-se para Absalão, 2 mandou trazer de Tecoa uma mulher sábia e lhe disse:

— Finja que está muito triste, vista as suas roupas de luto, não se unja com óleo e faça de conta que é uma mulher que há muito tempo está de luto por algum morto. 3 Apresente-se ao rei e diga-lhe tais e tais palavras.

E Joabe lhe pôs as palavras na boca. 4 A mulher tecoíta apresentou-se ao rei, e, inclinando-se, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra e disse:

— Ajude-me, ó rei!

5 Então o rei perguntou:

— Em que posso ajudá-la?

Ela respondeu:

— Ai de mim! Sou viúva; o meu marido morreu. 6 Esta sua serva tinha dois filhos, que brigaram entre si no campo. Como não houve quem os apartasse, um deles matou o outro. 7 Eis que toda a parentela se levantou contra esta sua serva, e estão dizendo: "Entregue-nos aquele que matou o seu irmão, para que o matemos, em vingança da vida que ele tirou e para que destruamos também o herdeiro." Assim, querem apagar a última brasa que me restou, não deixando a meu marido nome, nem sobrevivente na terra.

8 O rei disse à mulher:

— Vá para a sua casa, e eu darei ordens a seu respeito.

9 Mas a mulher tecoíta disse ao rei:

— Ó rei, meu senhor, que a culpa caia sobre mim e sobre a casa de meu pai. O rei e o seu trono sejam inocentes.

10 Então o rei disse:

— Se alguém falar contra você, traga-o aqui, e ele nunca mais a incomodará.

11 A mulher acrescentou:

— Que o rei se lembre do Senhor, seu Deus, para que os vingadores do sangue não se multipliquem e exterminem o meu filho.

Davi respondeu:

— Tão certo como vive o Senhor, não há de cair no chão nem um só dos cabelos de seu filho.

12 Então a mulher disse:

— Permita que esta sua serva fale uma palavra ao rei, meu senhor.

Ele disse:

— Fale.

13 E a mulher prosseguiu:

— Por que o senhor, meu rei, imaginou tal coisa contra o povo de Deus? Pois, ao pronunciar tal juízo, o rei condena a si mesmo, visto que não quer fazer voltar o seu desterrado. 14 Porque todos temos de morrer; somos como água derramada na terra que já não se pode juntar. Porque Deus não tira a vida, mas encontra meios para que o banido não permaneça afastado de sua presença. 15 Se vim, agora, falar esta palavra ao rei, meu senhor, é porque o povo me atemorizou. Porque esta sua serva dizia: "Vou falar com o rei, porque talvez ele fará segundo a palavra desta sua serva. 16 Porque o rei atenderá, para livrar a sua serva da mão do homem que quer destruir tanto a mim como a meu filho da herança de Deus." 17 Dizia mais esta sua serva: "Seja, agora, a palavra do rei, meu senhor, para a minha tranquilidade, porque, como um anjo de Deus, assim é o rei, meu senhor, para discernir entre o bem e o mal." Que o Senhor, seu Deus, esteja com o rei, meu senhor.

18 Então o rei disse à mulher:

— Não me encubra nada do que vou lhe perguntar.

A mulher respondeu:

— Pois fale o rei, meu senhor.

19 O rei perguntou:

— Não é verdade que a mão de Joabe está com você em tudo isto?

Ela respondeu:

— Juro pela sua vida, ó rei, meu senhor, que ninguém poderá se desviar, nem para a direita nem para a esquerda, de tudo o que o rei, meu senhor, tem dito. Sim, foi o seu servo Joabe quem me deu ordem e foi ele quem ditou a esta sua serva todas estas palavras. 20 Foi para mudar o aspecto deste caso que o seu servo Joabe fez isto. Porém o meu senhor é tão sábio como um anjo de Deus, para entender tudo o que se passa na terra.

21 Então o rei disse a Joabe:

— Atendi ao seu pedido. Vá e traga o jovem Absalão.

22 Joabe se inclinou, prostrou-se em terra, abençoou o rei e disse:

— Hoje reconheço que obtive favor aos seus olhos, ó rei, meu senhor, porque o rei fez segundo a palavra do seu servo.

23 Então Joabe se levantou, foi a Gesur e trouxe Absalão a Jerusalém. 24 Mas o rei disse:

— Que ele volte para a sua casa e não veja a minha face.

Assim Absalão voltou para a sua casa e não viu a face do rei.

25 Em todo o Israel não havia homem tão celebrado por sua beleza como Absalão. Desde a planta do pé até o alto da cabeça, não havia nele defeito algum. 26 Quando cortava o cabelo — e isto se fazia no fim de cada ano, porque o cabelo lhe ficava pesado demais —, seu peso era de mais de dois quilos, segundo o peso real. 27 Também nasceram a Absalão três filhos e uma filha. A filha se chamava Tamar e era uma mulher muito bonita.

28 Absalão ficou dois anos em Jerusalém sem ver a face do rei. 29 Então mandou chamar Joabe, para o enviar ao rei, mas Joabe não quis vir. Mandou chamá-lo segunda vez, mas Joabe ainda não quis vir. 30 Então Absalão disse aos seus servos:

— Vejam, Joabe tem um pedaço de campo pegado ao meu, e tem cevada nele. Vão lá e ponham fogo.

E os servos de Absalão meteram fogo nesse pedaço de campo. 31 Então Joabe se levantou, foi à casa de Absalão e lhe disse:

— Por que os seus servos meteram fogo no pedaço de campo que é meu?

32 Absalão respondeu:

— Mandei chamá-lo, dizendo: "Venha cá", para que o envie ao rei, para dizer-lhe o seguinte: "Para que vim de Gesur? Melhor seria ter ficado lá." Agora quero ver o rei. Se há em mim alguma culpa, que ele me mate.

33 Então Joabe foi ao rei e lhe entregou a mensagem de Absalão. O rei chamou Absalão, e este se apresentou diante dele e inclinou-se sobre o rosto em terra. E o rei o beijou.

1 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.2 And Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched from there a wise woman, and said to her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on mourning apparel, I pray thee, and do not anoint thyself with oil, but be as a woman who has a lon3 And go in to the king, and speak on this manner to him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.4 And when the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.5 And the king said to her, What troubles thee? And she answered, Of a truth I am a widow, and my husband is dead.6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and killed him.7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against thy handmaid, and they say, Deliver him who smote his brother that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed, and so destroy the heir also. Thus they will quench my co8 And the king said to the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.9 And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house, and the king and his throne be guiltless.10 And the king said, Whoever says anything to thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.11 Then she said, I pray thee, let the king remember LORD thy God, that the avenger of blood not destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As LORD lives, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.12 Then the woman said, Let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak a word to my lord the king. And he said, Say on.13 And the woman said, Why then have thou devised such a thing against the people of God? For in speaking this word the king is as he who is guilty, in that the king does not fetch home again his banished one.14 For we must die, and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again, neither does God take away life, but devises means that he who is banished be not an outcast from him.15 Now therefore seeing that I have come to speak this word to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid. And thy handmaid said, I will now speak to the king. It may be that the king will perform the request of hi16 For the king will hear to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.17 Then thy handmaid said, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be gracious, for as an agent of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. And LORD thy God be with thee.18 Then the king answered and said to the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, anything that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.19 And the king said, Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul lives, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken, for20 Thy servant Joab has done this thing to change the face of the matter. And my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an agent of God, to know all things that are on the earth.21 And the king said to Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing. Go therefore, bring the young man Absalom back.22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and did obeisance, and blessed the king. And Joab said, Today thy servant knows that I have found favor in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king has performed the request of his serva23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.24 And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, but let him not see my face. So Absalom turned to his own house, and did not see the king's face.25 Now in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty; from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.26 And when he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year's end that he cut it, because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king's weight.27 And to Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter whose name was Tamar. She was a woman of a fair countenance.28 And Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and he did not see the king's face.29 Then Absalom sent for Joab to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. And he sent again a second time, but he would not come.30 Therefore he said to his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom to his house, and said to him, Why have thy servants set my field on fire?32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent to thee, saying, Come here, that I may send thee to the king to say, Why have I come from Geshur? It were better for me to still be there. Now therefore let me see the king's face, and if t33 So Joab came to the king, and told him. And when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.
