1 Então os homens de Efraim disseram a Gideão:

— Que é isto que você fez conosco, não nos chamando quando foi lutar contra os midianitas?

E discutiram fortemente com ele. 2 Porém ele lhes disse:

— Que mais fiz eu, agora, do que vocês? Não é fato que os poucos cachos de uvas deixados por Efraim são melhores do que toda a colheita de Abiezer? 3 Deus entregou nas mãos de vocês os príncipes dos midianitas, Orebe e Zeebe. O que pude eu fazer em comparação com o que vocês fizeram?

Depois de ele dizer isto, abrandou-se a ira deles contra Gideão.

4 Quando Gideão chegou ao Jordão, passou com os trezentos homens que com ele estavam, cansados mas ainda perseguindo os inimigos. 5 E disse aos homens de Sucote:

— Por favor, deem alguns pães para estes que me seguem, pois estão cansados, e eu vou ao encalço de Zeba e Salmuna, reis dos midianitas.

6 Porém os chefes de Sucote disseram:

— Será que você já tem Zeba e Salmuna em seu poder, para que demos pão ao exército que está com você?

7 Então Gideão disse:

— Por isso, quando o Senhor entregar Zeba e Salmuna nas minhas mãos, rasgarei a carne de vocês com espinheiros e outras plantas do deserto.

8 Dali Gideão foi a Penuel e fez o mesmo pedido aos homens daquele lugar. Mas esses de Penuel lhe responderam como os homens de Sucote lhe haviam respondido. 9 Por isso também falou aos homens de Penuel, dizendo:

— Quando eu voltar em paz, derrubarei esta torre.

10 Ora, Zeba e Salmuna estavam em Carcor com os seus exércitos, uns quinze mil homens, todos os que restaram do exército de povos do Oriente, pois cento e vinte mil homens que puxavam da espada tinham sido mortos. 11 Gideão foi pelo caminho dos nômades, a leste de Noba e Jogbeá, e atacou aquele exército de surpresa. 12 Zeba e Salmuna fugiram, mas Gideão os perseguiu. Ele prendeu os dois reis dos midianitas, Zeba e Salmuna, e deixou todo aquele exército em pânico.

13 Quando Gideão, filho de Joás, voltou da batalha, pela subida de Heres, 14 prendeu um moço de Sucote e lhe fez perguntas. E o moço deu por escrito o nome dos chefes e anciãos de Sucote, setenta e sete homens. 15 Então Gideão foi falar com os homens de Sucote e lhes disse:

— Vejam! Aqui estão Zeba e Salmuna, a respeito dos quais vocês zombaram de mim, dizendo: "Será que você já tem Zeba e Salmuna em seu poder, para que demos pão aos seus homens cansados?"

16 E prendeu os anciãos da cidade. Pegou espinheiros e outras plantas do deserto e, com eles, deu severa lição aos homens de Sucote. 17 Derrubou a torre de Penuel e matou os homens da cidade. 18 Depois perguntou a Zeba e a Salmuna:

— Como eram os homens que vocês mataram em Tabor?

E eles responderam:

— Como você, assim eram eles; cada um se parecia com um filho de rei.

19 Gideão disse:

— Eram meus irmãos, filhos de minha mãe. Tão certo como vive o Senhor, se vocês os tivessem deixado com vida, eu não mataria vocês.

20 E disse a Jéter, seu primogênito:

— Levante-se e mate-os.

Porém o moço não arrancou da sua espada, porque teve medo, pois ainda era jovem. 21 Então Zeba e Salmuna disseram:

— Venha você mesmo e nos mate. Pois o homem é conhecido por sua valentia.

Gideão foi, matou Zeba e Salmuna e pegou os ornamentos em forma de meia-lua que estavam no pescoço dos camelos deles.

22 Então os homens de Israel disseram a Gideão:

— Domine sobre nós, tanto você como o seu filho e o filho de seu filho, porque você nos livrou do poder dos midianitas.

23 Porém Gideão lhes disse:

— Não dominarei sobre vocês, nem tampouco meu filho dominará sobre vocês. O Senhor Deus dominará sobre vocês.

24 E Gideão continuou:

— Mas quero fazer um pedido: que cada um de vocês me dê as argolas do seu despojo.

É que os midianitas tinham argolas de ouro, pois eram ismaelitas. 25 Então eles responderam:

— De bom grado as daremos.

E estenderam uma capa, e cada um deles colocou ali uma argola do seu despojo. 26 O peso das argolas de ouro que pediu foi de uns vinte quilos de ouro — sem contar os ornamentos em forma de meia-lua, os pendentes e as roupas de púrpura que os reis dos midianitas usavam, e sem contar os ornamentos que os camelos traziam ao pescoço.

27 Disso Gideão fez uma estola sacerdotal e a pôs na sua cidade, em Ofra. E todo o Israel se prostituiu ali, adorando essa estola. E isso veio a ser um tropeço para Gideão e toda a sua casa.

28 Assim, os midianitas foram subjugados pelos filhos de Israel e nunca mais levantaram a cabeça. E a terra ficou em paz durante quarenta anos nos dias de Gideão.

29 Jerubaal, filho de Joás, retirou-se e ficou morando em sua casa. 30 Gideão teve setenta filhos, todos provindos dele, porque tinha muitas mulheres. 31 A sua concubina, que morava em Siquém, lhe deu também à luz um filho, e ele lhe deu o nome de Abimeleque. 32 Gideão, filho de Joás, morreu em boa velhice e foi sepultado no túmulo de Joás, seu pai, em Ofra, cidade da família de Abiezer.

33 Depois que Gideão morreu, os filhos de Israel voltaram a se prostituir com os baalins e puseram Baal-Berite por deus. 34 Os filhos de Israel não se lembraram do Senhor, seu Deus, que os havia livrado do poder de todos os seus inimigos ao redor. 35 Também não usaram de bondade com a casa de Jerubaal, a saber, Gideão, segundo todo o bem que ele tinha feito a Israel.

1 And the men of Ephraim said to him, Why have thou done thus to us, that thou did not call us when thou went to fight with Midian? And they chided with him sharply.2 And he said to them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?3 God has delivered into your hand the rulers of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him when he had said that.4 And Gideon came to the Jordan, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men who were with him, faint, yet pursuing.5 And he said to the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.6 And the rulers of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we should give bread to thine army?7 And Gideon said, Therefore when LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.8 And he went up from there to Penuel, and spoke to them in like manner, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.9 And he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the army of the sons of the east, for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men who drew a sword.11 And Gideon went up by the way of those who dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the army, for the army was confident.12 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued after them. And he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the army.13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.14 And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him. And he described for him the rulers of Succoth, and the elders of it, seventy-seven men.15 And he came to the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye taunted me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread to thy men who are weary?16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.17 And he broke down the tower of Penuel, and killed the men of the city.18 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye killed at Tabor? And they answered, As thou are, so were they. Each one resembled the sons of a king.19 And he said, They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As LORD lives, if ye had saved them alive, I would not kill you.20 And he said to Jether his first-born, Up, and kill them. But the youth did not draw his sword, for he feared because he was yet a youth.21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us, for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels' necks.22 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also, for thou have saved us out of the hand of Midian.23 And Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you. LORD shall rule over you.24 And Gideon said to them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his spoil. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and cast in it every man the earrings of his spoil.26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains tha27 And Gideon made an ephod of it, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah. And all Israel played the harlot after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon, and to his house.28 So Midian was subdued before the sons of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.30 And Gideon had seventy sons begotten from his body, for he had many wives.31 And his concubine who was in Shechem, she also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulcher of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the sons of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.34 And the sons of Israel did not remember LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side,35 neither did they show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [who is] Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shown to Israel.
