1 Josias tinha oito anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou trinta e um anos em Jerusalém. A mãe dele se chamava Jedida e era filha de Adaías, de Boscate. 2 Josias fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, andou em todo o caminho de Davi, seu pai, e não se desviou nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.

3 No décimo oitavo ano do seu reinado, o rei Josias mandou o escrivão Safã, filho de Azalias, filho de Mesulão, à Casa do Senhor, 4 dizendo:

— Vá pedir ao sumo sacerdote Hilquias que conte o dinheiro que foi trazido à Casa do Senhor, o qual os guardas da porta ajuntaram do povo. 5 Que esse dinheiro seja entregue aos que dirigem a obra e têm a seu encargo a Casa do Senhor, para que paguem àqueles que fazem a obra na Casa do Senhor, para repararem os estragos do templo: 6 aos carpinteiros, aos construtores e aos pedreiros. E que comprem madeira e pedras lavradas, para repararem os estragos do templo. 7 Mas não é necessário que prestem contas do dinheiro que lhes foi entregue, porque são honestos.

8 Então o sumo sacerdote Hilquias disse ao escrivão Safã:

— Achei o Livro da Lei na Casa do Senhor.

Hilquias entregou o livro a Safã, e este o leu. 9 Então o escrivão Safã foi falar com o rei e lhe deu relatório, dizendo:

— Os seus servos contaram o dinheiro que estava na casa do Senhor e o entregaram nas mãos dos que dirigem a obra e têm a seu encargo a Casa do Senhor.

10 Depois o escrivão Safã anunciou ao rei:

— O sacerdote Hilquias me entregou um livro.

E Safã o leu diante do rei.

11 Quando ouviu as palavras do Livro da Lei, o rei rasgou as suas roupas. 12 Então deu ordens a Hilquias, o sacerdote, a Aicão, filho de Safã, a Acbor, filho de Micaías, a Safã, o escrivão, e a Asaías, servo do rei, dizendo:

13 — Vão consultar o Senhor por mim, pelo povo e por todo o Judá, a respeito das palavras deste livro que foi encontrado. Porque é grande o furor do Senhor, que se acendeu contra nós, porque os nossos pais não deram ouvidos às palavras deste livro, para fazerem segundo tudo o que está escrito a nosso respeito.

14 Então o sacerdote Hilquias, Aicão, Acbor, Safã e Asaías foram falar com a profetisa Hulda, esposa de Salum, encarregado das vestimentas da Casa do Senhor, filho de Ticva, filho de Harás. Hulda morava na parte nova da cidade, em Jerusalém. Eles lhe contaram o que havia acontecido, 15 e ela lhes disse:

— Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: "Digam ao homem que os enviou a mim: 16 ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que trarei desgraça sobre este lugar e sobre os seus moradores, a saber, todas as palavras do livro que o rei de Judá leu. 17 Por terem me abandonado e queimado incenso a outros deuses, para me provocarem à ira com todas as obras das suas mãos, o meu furor se acendeu contra este lugar e não se apagará.’ 18 Mas ao rei de Judá, que os enviou para consultar o Senhor, digam o seguinte: ‘Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, a respeito das palavras que você ouviu: 19 Visto que o seu coração se enterneceu e você se humilhou diante do Senhor, quando ouviu as ameaças que fiz contra este lugar e contra os seus moradores — que seriam objeto de horror e de maldição —, rasgou as suas roupas e chorou diante de mim, também eu ouvi a sua oração, diz o Senhor. 20 Por isso, deixarei que você morra e seja sepultado em paz, e os seus olhos não verão todo o mal que trarei sobre este lugar.’"

Então eles levaram esta resposta ao rei.

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 2 And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

3 And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of Jehovah, saying, 4 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into the house of Jehovah, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people: 5 and let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah; and let them give it to the workmen that are in the house of Jehovah, to repair the breaches of the house, 6 unto the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the house. 7 Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.

8 And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 9 And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah. 10 And Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. 11 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes. 12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 13 Go ye, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

14 So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they communed with her. 15 And she said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Tell ye the man that sent you unto me, 16 Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read. 17 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched. 18 But unto the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: As touching the words which thou hast heard, 19 because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before Jehovah, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah. 20 Therefore, behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
