1 Uma vez em terra, verificamos que a ilha se chamava Malta. 2 Os nativos nos trataram com singular humanidade, porque, acendendo uma fogueira, acolheram a todos nós por causa da chuva que caía e por causa do frio. 3 Tendo Paulo ajuntado e atirado à fogueira um feixe de gravetos, uma víbora, fugindo do calor, prendeu-se na mão dele. 4 Quando os nativos viram a víbora pendurada na mão de Paulo, disseram uns aos outros:

— Certamente este homem é assassino, porque, salvo do mar, a Justiça não o deixa viver.

5 Porém ele, sacudindo a víbora no fogo, não sofreu mal nenhum. 6 Mas eles esperavam que Paulo viesse a inchar ou a cair morto de repente. Depois de muito esperar, vendo que nada de anormal lhe acontecia, mudando de opinião, diziam que ele era um deus.

7 Perto daquele lugar havia um sítio que pertencia ao homem principal da ilha, chamado Públio, o qual nos recebeu e hospedou com muita bondade durante três dias. 8 Aconteceu que o pai de Públio estava enfermo de disenteria, ardendo em febre. Paulo foi visitá-lo e, orando, impôs-lhe as mãos, e o curou. 9 À vista deste acontecimento, os demais enfermos da ilha vieram e foram curados, 10 os quais nos distinguiram com muitas honrarias; e, tendo nós de prosseguir viagem, nos puseram a bordo tudo o que era necessário.

11 Três meses depois, embarcamos num navio de Alexandria, que tinha passado o inverno na ilha. O navio tinha por emblema os deuses gêmeos Castor e Pólux. 12 Chegando a Siracusa, ficamos ali três dias. 13 Dali, navegando ao longo da costa, chegamos a Régio. No dia seguinte começou a soprar o vento sul e, em dois dias, chegamos a Putéoli, 14 onde encontramos alguns irmãos que nos pediram que ficássemos com eles sete dias; e foi assim que nos dirigimos a Roma. 15 Tendo ali os irmãos ouvido notícias nossas, vieram ao nosso encontro até a Praça de Ápio e as Três Vendas. Ao vê-los, Paulo deu graças a Deus e sentiu-se mais animado.

16 Uma vez em Roma, Paulo recebeu permissão para morar por sua conta, tendo em sua companhia o soldado que o guardava.

17 Três dias depois, ele convocou os principais dos judeus. Quando estavam reunidos, Paulo disse:

— Meus irmãos, apesar de nada ter feito contra o povo ou contra os costumes paternos, vim preso desde Jerusalém, entregue nas mãos dos romanos. 18 Estes, depois de me interrogarem, quiseram soltar-me, porque não encontraram em mim nenhum crime passível de morte. 19 Diante da oposição dos judeus, fui obrigado a apelar para César, não tendo eu, porém, nada de que acusar o meu povo. 20 Foi por isto que pedi para vê-los e para falar com vocês; porque é pela esperança de Israel que estou preso com esta corrente.

21 Então eles lhe disseram:

— Nós não recebemos da Judeia nenhuma carta que falasse a respeito de você. Também não veio qualquer dos irmãos que nos anunciasse ou dissesse algo de mau a seu respeito. 22 Mas gostaríamos de ouvir o que você pensa, porque sabemos que em todos os lugares essa seita é contestada.

23 Tendo eles marcado um dia, foram em grande número ao encontro de Paulo no lugar onde ele residia. Então, desde a manhã até a tarde, lhes fez uma exposição em testemunho do Reino de Deus, procurando persuadi-los a respeito de Jesus, tanto pela Lei de Moisés como pelos Profetas. 24 Houve alguns que ficaram persuadidos pelo que Paulo dizia; outros, porém, continuaram incrédulos. 25 E, havendo discordância entre eles, começaram a ir embora. Mas, antes que saíssem, Paulo disse estas palavras:

— Bem falou o Espírito Santo aos pais de vocês, por meio do profeta Isaías, quando disse:

26 "Vá a este povo e diga:

Ouvindo, vocês ouvirão

e de modo nenhum

entenderão;

vendo, vocês verão

e de modo nenhum

perceberão.

27 Porque o coração deste povo

está endurecido;

ouviram com os ouvidos tapados

e fecharam os olhos;

para não acontecer que

vejam com os olhos,

ouçam com os ouvidos,

entendam com o coração,

se convertam

e sejam por mim curados."

28 E Paulo concluiu:

— Portanto, fiquem sabendo que esta salvação que Deus oferece foi enviada aos gentios. E eles a ouvirão.

29 [Ditas estas palavras, os judeus foram embora, tendo entre si grande discussão.]

30 Durante dois anos, Paulo permaneceu na sua própria casa, que tinha alugado, onde recebia todos os que o procuravam. 31 Pregava o Reino de Deus, e, com toda a ousadia, ensinava as coisas referentes ao Senhor Jesus Cristo, sem impedimento algum.

1 And when we were escaped, then we knew that the island was called Melita. 2 And the barbarians showed us no common kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us all, because of the present rain, and because of the cold. 3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out by reason of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped from the sea, yet Justice hath not suffered to live. 5 Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm. 6 But they expected that he would have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but when they were long in expectation and beheld nothing amiss came to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

7 Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius; who received us, and entertained us three days courteously. 8 And it was so, that the father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery: unto whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laying his hands on him healed him. 9 And when this was done, the rest also that had diseases in the island came, and were cured: 10 who also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board such things as we needed.

11 And after three months we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose sign was The Twin Brothers. 12 And touching at Syracuse, we tarried there three days. 13 And from thence we made a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium: and after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli; 14 where we found brethren, and were entreated to tarry with them seven days: and so we came to Rome. 15 And from thence the brethren, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

16 And when we entered into Rome, Paul was suffered to abide by himself with the soldier that guarded him.

17 And it came to pass, that after three days he called together those that were the chief of the Jews: and when they were come together, he said unto them, I, brethren, though I had done nothing against the people, or the customs of our fathers, yet was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans: 18 who, when they had examined me, desired to set me at liberty, because there was no cause of death in me. 19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had aught whereof to accuse my nation. 20 For this cause therefore did I entreat you to see and to speak with me: for because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. 21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters from Judæa concerning thee, nor did any of the brethren come hither and report or speak any harm of thee. 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.

23 And when they had appointed him a day, they came to him into his lodging in great number; to whom he expounded the matter, testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto your fathers, 26 saying,

Go thou unto this people, and say,

By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand;

And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive:

27 For this people’s heart is waxed gross,

And their ears are dull of hearing,

And their eyes they have closed;

Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes,

And hear with their ears,

And understand with their heart,

And should turn again,

And I should heal them.

28 Be it known therefore unto you, that this salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles: they will also hear. 29

30 And he abode two whole years in his own hired dwelling, and received all that went in unto him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, none forbidding him.
