1 Cinco dias depois, o sumo sacerdote Ananias foi até Cesareia com alguns anciãos e com certo orador, chamado Tértulo, os quais apresentaram ao governador a sua acusação contra Paulo. 2 Depois que Paulo foi chamado, Tértulo passou a acusá-lo, dizendo:

— Excelentíssimo Félix, tendo nós desfrutado de paz perene por meio do senhor e tendo sido feitas, por seu providente cuidado, notáveis reformas em benefício deste povo, 3 sempre e em todos os lugares, reconhecemos isto com profunda gratidão. 4 Entretanto, para não deter o senhor por muito tempo, peço que, de acordo com a sua clemência, nos ouça por alguns instantes. 5 Porque, tendo nós verificado que este homem é uma peste e promove desordens entre os judeus do mundo inteiro, sendo também o principal agitador da seita dos nazarenos, 6 o qual também tentou profanar o templo, nós o prendemos com o intuito de julgá-lo segundo a nossa Lei. 7 Mas, sobrevindo o comandante Lísias, o arrebatou das nossas mãos com grande violência, 8 ordenando que os seus acusadores viessem à presença do senhor. Se o interrogar, o senhor mesmo poderá tomar conhecimento de todas as coisas de que nós o acusamos.

9 Os judeus também concordaram na acusação, afirmando que estas coisas eram assim.

10 Quando o governador fez sinal para que Paulo falasse, ele disse:

— Sabendo que há muitos anos o senhor é juiz desta nação, sinto-me à vontade para me defender. 11 O senhor mesmo pode verificar que não se passaram mais de doze dias desde que fui a Jerusalém para adorar a Deus; 12 e que não me acharam no templo discutindo com ninguém, nem agitando o povo, fosse nas sinagogas ou na cidade; 13 nem podem provar diante do senhor as acusações que agora fazem contra mim. 14 Porém confesso ao senhor que, segundo o Caminho, a que chamam seita, assim eu sirvo ao Deus de nossos pais, acreditando em todas as coisas que concordam com a lei e os escritos dos profetas, 15 tendo esperança em Deus, como também estes a têm, de que haverá ressurreição, tanto de justos como de injustos. 16 Por isso, também me esforço por ter sempre uma consciência pura diante de Deus e dos homens.

17 — Depois de anos, vim trazer donativos para o meu povo e também fazer oferendas, 18 e foi nesta prática que alguns judeus da província da Ásia me encontraram já purificado no templo, sem ajuntamento de povo e sem tumulto, 19 os quais deviam comparecer diante do senhor e fazer as acusações, se tivessem alguma coisa contra mim. 20 Ou então que estes homens que estão aqui digam que crime acharam em mim, por ocasião do meu comparecimento diante do Sinédrio, 21 salvo estas palavras que clamei, estando entre eles: "Hoje estou sendo julgado por vocês por causa da ressurreição dos mortos."

22 Então Félix, conhecendo mais acuradamente as coisas relacionadas com o Caminho, adiou a causa, dizendo:

— Quando chegar o comandante Lísias, tomarei uma decisão a respeito do caso de vocês.

23 E ordenou ao centurião que conservasse Paulo na prisão, tratando-o com tolerância e não impedindo que os seus próprios o servissem.

24 Passados alguns dias, Félix veio com Drusila, sua mulher, que era judia. Mandou chamar Paulo e passou a ouvi-lo a respeito da fé em Cristo Jesus. 25 Quando Paulo começou a falar sobre a justiça, o domínio próprio e o Juízo vindouro, Félix ficou amedrontado e disse:

— Por agora, você pode retirar-se, e, quando eu tiver oportunidade, mandarei chamá-lo.

26 Ao mesmo tempo, esperava que Paulo lhe desse dinheiro. Por isso, chamando-o mais frequentemente, conversava com ele.

27 Dois anos mais tarde, Félix teve por sucessor Pórcio Festo. E, como Félix queria assegurar o apoio dos judeus, manteve Paulo encarcerado.

1 And after five days the high priest Ananias came down with certain elders, and with an orator, one Tertullus; and they informed the governor against Paul. 2 And when he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying,

Seeing that by thee we enjoy much peace, and that by thy providence evils are corrected for this nation, 3 we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness. 4 But, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I entreat thee to hear us of thy clemency a few words. 5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: 6 who moreover assayed to profane the temple: on whom also we laid hold: 7 8 from whom thou wilt be able, by examining him thyself, to take knowledge of all these things whereof we accuse him. 9 And the Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that these things were so.

10 And when the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, Paul answered,

Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I cheerfully make my defence: 11 seeing that thou canst take knowledge that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem: 12 and neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man or stirring up a crowd, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city. 13 Neither can they prove to thee the things whereof they now accuse me. 14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the Way which they call a sect, so serve I the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets; 15 having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and unjust. 16 Herein I also exercise myself to have a conscience void of offence toward God and men always. 17 Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings: 18 amidst which they found me purified in the temple, with no crowd, nor yet with tumult: but there were certain Jews from Asia— 19 who ought to have been here before thee, and to make accusation, if they had aught against me. 20 Or else let these men themselves say what wrong-doing they found when I stood before the council, 21 except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question before you this day.

22 But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will determine your matter. 23 And he gave order to the centurion that he should be kept in charge, and should have indulgence; and not to forbid any of his friends to minister unto him.

24 But after certain days, Felix came with Drusilla, his wife, who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus. 25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, and self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, Go thy way for this time; and when I have a convenient season, I will call thee unto me. 26 He hoped withal that money would be given him of Paul: wherefore also he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him. 27 But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.
