1 No terceiro mês depois da saída dos filhos de Israel da terra do Egito, no primeiro dia desse mês, eles chegaram ao deserto do Sinai. 2 Tendo partido de Refidim, vieram ao deserto do Sinai, no qual acamparam; ali Israel acampou em frente ao monte. 3 Moisés subiu para encontrar-se com Deus. E do monte o Senhor o chamou e lhe disse:

— Assim você falará à casa de Jacó e anunciará aos filhos de Israel: 4 "Vocês viram o que fiz aos egípcios e como levei vocês sobre asas de águia e os trouxe para perto de mim. 5 Agora, pois, se ouvirem atentamente a minha voz e guardarem a minha aliança, vocês serão a minha propriedade peculiar dentre todos os povos. Porque toda a terra é minha, 6 e vocês serão para mim um reino de sacerdotes e uma nação santa." São estas as palavras que você falará aos filhos de Israel.

7 Moisés foi, chamou os anciãos do povo e expôs diante deles todas estas palavras que o Senhor lhe havia ordenado. 8 Então todo o povo respondeu a uma só voz:

— Tudo o que o Senhor falou faremos.

E Moisés relatou ao Senhor as palavras do povo. 9 O Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Eis que virei a você numa nuvem escura, para que o povo ouça quando eu falar com você e para que também creiam sempre em você.

Porque Moisés tinha anunciado as palavras do povo ao Senhor.

10 E o Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Vá ao povo e consagre-o no dia de hoje e amanhã. Que eles lavem as suas roupas 11 e estejam prontos para o terceiro dia, porque no terceiro dia o Senhor, à vista de todo o povo, descerá sobre o monte Sinai. 12 Marque ao redor do monte limites para o povo, dizendo: "Tomem cuidado para não subir o monte, nem tocar a sua extremidade. Todo aquele que tocar o monte será morto. 13 Mão nenhuma tocará nele. Se o fizer, será apedrejado ou flechado; quer seja animal, quer seja homem, não viverá. Quando soar longamente a trombeta, então subirão o monte."

14 Moisés desceu do monte para junto do povo e consagrou o povo; e lavaram as suas roupas. 15 E Moisés disse ao povo:

— Estejam prontos no terceiro dia. Que até lá ninguém tenha relações com a sua mulher.

16 Ao amanhecer do terceiro dia, houve trovões e relâmpagos, uma espessa nuvem cobriu o monte, e ouviu-se um forte som de trombeta, de maneira que todo o povo que estava no arraial tremeu de medo. 17 E Moisés levou o povo para fora do arraial ao encontro de Deus; e puseram-se ao pé do monte. 18 Todo o monte Sinai fumegava, porque o Senhor havia descido sobre ele em fogo. A fumaça subia como fumaça de uma fornalha, e todo o monte tremia com violência. 19 E o som da trombeta ia aumentando cada vez mais. Moisés falava, e Deus lhe respondia no trovão. 20 O Senhor desceu sobre o monte Sinai, sobre o alto do monte. O Senhor chamou Moisés para o alto do monte e Moisés foi até lá. 21 E o Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Desça e avise ao povo que não ultrapasse o limite até o Senhor para vê-lo, para evitar que muitos deles sejam mortos. 22 Também os sacerdotes, que se aproximam do Senhor, devem se consagrar, para que o Senhor não se volte contra eles.

23 Então Moisés disse ao Senhor:

— O povo não poderá subir o monte Sinai, porque tu nos advertiste, dizendo: "Marque limites ao redor do monte e consagre-o."

24 E o Senhor respondeu:

— Vá, desça; depois você subirá, e Arão virá com você; porém os sacerdotes e o povo não devem ultrapassar o limite para subir ao Senhor, para que Deus não se volte contra eles.

25 Então Moisés desceu ao povo e lhe disse tudo isso.

1 In the third month after the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 And when they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mount. 3 And Moses went up unto God, and Jehovah called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be mine own possession from among all peoples: for all the earth is mine: 6 and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Jehovah commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that Jehovah hath spoken we will do. And Moses reported the words of the people unto Jehovah. 9 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and may also believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto Jehovah. 10 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments, 11 and be ready against the third day; for the third day Jehovah will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: 13 no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, he shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. 14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their garments. 15 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not near a woman.

16 And it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a trumpet exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 And mount Sinai, the whole of it, smoked, because Jehovah descended upon it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. 19 And when the voice of the trumpet waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And Jehovah came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount: and Jehovah called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 21 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto Jehovah to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 And let the priests also, that come near to Jehovah, sanctify themselves, lest Jehovah break forth upon them. 23 And Moses said unto Jehovah, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou didst charge us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. 24 And Jehovah said unto him, Go, get thee down; and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto Jehovah, lest he break forth upon them. 25 So Moses went down unto the people, and told them.
