1 Então Elifaz, o temanita, tomou a palavra e disse:

2 "Se alguém tentar falar,

você terá paciência para ouvir?

Mas quem poderá conter

as palavras?

3 Veja bem! Você ensinou a muitos

e fortaleceu mãos cansadas.

4 As suas palavras sustentaram

os que tropeçavam,

e você fortaleceu

joelhos vacilantes.

5 Mas agora,

quando chega a sua vez,

você perde a paciência;

ao ser atingido,

você fica apavorado.

6 Você não tem confiança

no seu temor a Deus?

Não tem esperança na integridade

dos seus caminhos?

7 Pense bem: será que algum

inocente já chegou a perecer?

E onde os retos foram destruídos?

8 Segundo eu tenho visto,

os que lavram a iniquidade

e semeiam o mal,

isso mesmo eles colhem.

9 Com o hálito de Deus perecem;

e com o sopro da sua ira

são consumidos.

10 Cessa o bramido do leão

e a voz do leão feroz,

e os dentes dos leõezinhos

são quebrados.

11 O leão morre,

porque não há presa,

e os filhos da leoa

andam dispersos."

12 "Uma palavra me foi trazida

em segredo,

e os meus ouvidos perceberam

um sussurro dela.

13 Entre pensamentos

de visões noturnas,

quando o sono profundo

cai sobre as pessoas,

14 sobrevieram-me

o espanto e o tremor,

e todos os meus ossos

estremeceram.

15 Então um espírito passou

por diante de mim;

e se arrepiaram os cabelos

do meu corpo.

16 Ele parou, mas não reconheci

a sua aparência.

Um vulto estava

diante dos meus olhos;

houve silêncio, e ouvi uma voz:

17 ‘Pode um mortal ser justo

diante de Deus?

Pode alguém ser puro

diante do seu Criador?

18 Eis que Deus não confia

nos seus servos

e aos seus anjos

atribui imperfeições;

19 quanto mais àqueles

que habitam em casas de barro,

cujo fundamento está no pó,

e que são esmagados

como a traça!

20 Nascem de manhã

e à tarde são destruídos;

perecem para sempre,

sem que ninguém

se importe com isso.

21 Se o fio da vida lhes é cortado,

morrem e não alcançam

a sabedoria.’"

1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

2 If one assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved?

But who can withhold himself from speaking?

3 Behold, thou hast instructed many,

And thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling,

And thou hast made firm the feeble knees.

5 But now it is come unto thee, and thou faintest;

It toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

6 Is not thy fear of God thy confidence,

And the integrity of thy ways thy hope?

7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent?

Or where were the upright cut off?

8 According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity,

And sow trouble, reap the same.

9 By the breath of God they perish,

And by the blast of his anger are they consumed.

10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion,

And the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey,

And the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.

12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me,

And mine ear received a whisper thereof.

13 In thoughts from the visions of the night,

When deep sleep falleth on men,

14 Fear came upon me, and trembling,

Which made all my bones to shake.

15 Then a spirit passed before my face;

The hair of my flesh stood up.

16 It stood still, but I could not discern the appearance thereof;

A form was before mine eyes:

There was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

17 Shall mortal man be more just than God?

Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?

18 Behold, he putteth no trust in his servants;

And his angels he chargeth with folly:

19 How much more them that dwell in houses of clay,

Whose foundation is in the dust,

Who are crushed before the moth!

20 Betwixt morning and evening they are destroyed:

They perish for ever without any regarding it.

21 Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them?

They die, and that without wisdom.
