1 Então Jesus falou às multidões e aos seus discípulos:

2 — Na cadeira de Moisés se assentaram os escribas e os fariseus. 3 Portanto, façam e observem tudo o que eles disserem a vocês, mas não os imitem em suas obras; porque dizem e não fazem. 4 Atam fardos pesados, difíceis de carregar, e os põem sobre os ombros dos outros, mas eles mesmos nem com o dedo querem movê-los. 5 Praticam todas as suas obras a fim de serem vistos pelos outros; pois alargam os seus filactérios e alongam as franjas de suas capas. 6 Gostam do primeiro lugar nos banquetes e das primeiras cadeiras nas sinagogas, 7 das saudações nas praças e de serem chamados de "mestre". 8 Mas vocês não serão chamados de "mestre", porque um só é Mestre de vocês, e todos vocês são irmãos. 9 Aqui na terra, não chamem ninguém de "pai", porque só um é o Pai de vocês, aquele que está nos céus. 10 Nem queiram ser chamados de "guias", porque um só é o Guia de vocês, o Cristo. 11 Mas o maior entre vocês será o servo de vocês. 12 Quem se exaltar será humilhado; e quem se humilhar será exaltado.

13 — Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vocês fecham o Reino dos Céus diante das pessoas; pois vocês mesmos não entram, nem deixam entrar os que estão entrando!

14 [— Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vocês devoram as casas das viúvas e, para o justificar, fazem longas orações; por isso, vocês sofrerão juízo muito mais severo!]

15 — Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vocês percorrem o mar e a terra para fazer um prosélito; e, uma vez feito, o tornam filho do inferno duas vezes mais do que vocês!

16 — Ai de vocês, guias cegos, que dizem: "Se alguém jurar pelo santuário, isso não tem importância; mas, se alguém jurar pelo ouro do santuário, fica obrigado pelo que jurou!" 17 Seus tolos e cegos! Qual é mais importante: o ouro ou o santuário que santifica o ouro? 18 E vocês dizem: "Se alguém jurar pelo altar, isso não tem importância; mas, se alguém jurar pela oferta que está sobre o altar, fica obrigado pelo que jurou." 19 Cegos! Qual é mais importante: a oferta ou o altar que santifica a oferta? 20 Portanto, quem jurar pelo altar jura por ele e por tudo o que está sobre ele. 21 Quem jurar pelo santuário jura por ele e por aquele que nele habita; 22 e quem jurar pelo céu jura pelo trono de Deus e por aquele que está sentado no trono.

23 — Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vocês dão o dízimo da hortelã, do endro e do cominho e desprezam os preceitos mais importantes da Lei: a justiça, a misericórdia e a fé. Mas vocês deviam fazer estas coisas, sem omitir aquelas! 24 Guias cegos! Coam um mosquito, mas engolem um camelo!

25 — Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vocês limpam o exterior do copo e do prato, mas estes, por dentro, estão cheios de roubo e de glutonaria! 26 Fariseu cego! Limpe primeiro o interior do copo, para que também o seu exterior fique limpo!

27 — Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vocês são semelhantes aos sepulcros pintados de branco, que, por fora, se mostram belos, mas interiormente estão cheios de ossos de mortos e de toda podridão! 28 Assim também vocês, por fora, parecem justos aos olhos dos outros, mas, por dentro, estão cheios de hipocrisia e de maldade.

29 — Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vocês edificam os sepulcros dos profetas, enfeitam os túmulos dos justos 30 e dizem: "Se nós tivéssemos vivido nos dias de nossos pais, não teríamos sido seus cúmplices, quando mataram os profetas!" 31 Assim, vocês dão testemunho contra si mesmos de que são filhos dos que mataram os profetas. 32 Portanto, tratem de terminar aquilo que os pais de vocês começaram.

33 — Serpentes, raça de víboras! Como esperam escapar da condenação do inferno? 34 Por isso, eis que eu lhes envio profetas, sábios e escribas. A uns vocês matarão e a outros crucificarão; a outros ainda vocês açoitarão nas sinagogas e perseguirão de cidade em cidade; 35 para que recaia sobre vocês todo o sangue justo derramado sobre a terra, desde o sangue do justo Abel até o sangue de Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, a quem vocês mataram entre o santuário e o altar. 36 Em verdade lhes digo que todas estas coisas hão de vir sobre a presente geração.

37 — Jerusalém, Jerusalém! Você mata os profetas e apedreja os que lhe são enviados! Quantas vezes eu quis reunir os seus filhos, como a galinha ajunta os seus pintinhos debaixo das asas, mas vocês não quiseram! 38 Eis que a casa de vocês ficará deserta. 39 Pois eu lhes afirmo que, desde agora, não me verão mais, até que venham a dizer: "Bendito o que vem em nome do Senhor!"

1 Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat: 3 all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not. 4 Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger. 5 But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, even he who is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, even the Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter. 14

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor. 17 Ye fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that hath sanctified the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor. 19 Ye blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that sweareth by the heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel!

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous, 30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell? 34 Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: 35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. 39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
