1 Que diremos, então, a respeito de Abraão, nosso pai segundo a carne? O que foi que ele conseguiu? 2 Porque, se Abraão foi justificado por obras, tem do que se orgulhar, porém não diante de Deus. 3 Pois o que diz a Escritura? Ela diz: "Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi atribuído para justiça." 4 Ora, para quem trabalha, o salário não é considerado como favor, mas como dívida. 5 Mas, para quem não trabalha, porém crê naquele que justifica o ímpio, a sua fé lhe é atribuída como justiça. 6 E é assim também que Davi declara ser bem-aventurado aquele a quem Deus atribui justiça, independentemente de obras. 7 Davi disse:

"Bem-aventurados aqueles cujas

transgressões são perdoadas,

e cujos pecados são cobertos;

8 bem-aventurado aquele

a quem o Senhor

jamais atribuir pecado."

9 Esta bem-aventurança vem apenas sobre os circuncisos ou será que ela vem também sobre os incircuncisos? Porque dizemos: "A fé foi atribuída a Abraão para justiça." 10 Como, pois, lhe foi atribuída? Estando ele já circuncidado ou sendo ainda incircunciso? Não foi no regime da circuncisão, mas quando ele ainda não havia sido circuncidado. 11 E Abraão recebeu o sinal da circuncisão como selo da justiça da fé que teve quando ainda não havia sido circuncidado. E isto para que ele viesse a ser o pai de todos os que creem, embora não circuncidados, a fim de que a justiça fosse atribuída também a eles. 12 Ele é também pai da circuncisão, isto é, daqueles que não são apenas circuncisos, mas também andam nas pisadas da fé que teve Abraão, nosso pai, antes de ser circuncidado.

13 A promessa de que seria herdeiro do mundo não veio a Abraão ou à sua descendência por meio da lei, e sim por meio da justiça da fé. 14 Pois, se os da lei é que são os herdeiros, anula-se a fé e cancela-se a promessa. 15 Porque a lei suscita a ira; mas onde não há lei, também não há transgressão.

16 Essa é a razão por que provém da fé, para que seja segundo a graça, a fim de que a promessa seja garantida para toda a descendência, não somente à descendência que está no regime da lei, mas também à descendência que tem a fé que Abraão teve — porque Abraão é pai de todos nós, 17 como está escrito: "Eu o constituí por pai de muitas nações" — diante daquele em quem Abraão creu, o Deus que vivifica os mortos e chama à existência as coisas que não existem.

18 Abraão, esperando contra a esperança, creu, para vir a ser pai de muitas nações, segundo lhe havia sido dito: "Assim será a sua descendência." 19 E, sem enfraquecer na fé, levou em conta o seu próprio corpo já amortecido, tendo ele quase cem anos, e a esterilidade do ventre de Sara. 20 Não duvidou, por incredulidade, da promessa de Deus; mas, pela fé, se fortaleceu, dando glória a Deus, 21 estando plenamente convicto de que Deus era poderoso para cumprir o que havia prometido. 22 Assim, também isso lhe foi atribuído para justiça. 23 E as palavras "lhe foi atribuído" foram escritas não somente por causa dele, 24 mas também por nossa causa, visto que a nós igualmente nos será atribuído, a saber, a nós que cremos naquele que ressuscitou dentre os mortos a Jesus, nosso Senhor, 25 o qual foi entregue por causa das nossas transgressões e ressuscitou para a nossa justificação.

1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, hath found according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not toward God. 3 For what saith the scripture? And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but as of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reckoned for righteousness. 6 Even as David also pronounceth blessing upon the man, unto whom God reckoneth righteousness apart from works, 7 saying,

Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven,

And whose sins are covered.

8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not reckon sin.

9 Is this blessing then pronounced upon the circumcision, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say, To Abraham his faith was reckoned for righteousness. 10 How then was it reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision: 11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might be reckoned unto them; 12 and the father of circumcision to them who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he had in uncircumcision. 13 For not through the law was the promise to Abraham or to his seed that he should be heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they that are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of none effect: 15 for the law worketh wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there transgression. 16 For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace; to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all 17 (as it is written, A father of many nations have I made thee) before him whom he believed, even God, who giveth life to the dead, and calleth the things that are not, as though they were. 18 Who in hope believed against hope, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, So shall thy seed be. 19 And without being weakened in faith he considered his own body now as good as dead (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 20 yet, looking unto the promise of God, he wavered not through unbelief, but waxed strong through faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 Wherefore also it was reckoned unto him for righteousness. 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was reckoned unto him; 24 but for our sake also, unto whom it shall be reckoned, who believe on him that raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
