1 Meus irmãos, não sejam, muitos de vocês, mestres, sabendo que seremos julgados com mais rigor. 2 Porque todos tropeçamos em muitas coisas. Se alguém não tropeça no falar, é um indivíduo perfeito, capaz de refrear também todo o corpo. 3 Ora, se colocamos um freio na boca dos cavalos, para que nos obedeçam, também lhes dirigimos o corpo inteiro. 4 Observem, igualmente, os navios que, sendo tão grandes e impelidos por fortes ventos, são dirigidos por um pequeníssimo leme, e levados para onde o piloto quer. 5 Assim, também a língua, pequeno órgão, se gaba de grandes coisas. Vejam como uma fagulha incendeia uma grande floresta! 6 Ora, a língua é um fogo; é um mundo de maldade. A língua está situada entre os membros do nosso corpo e contamina o corpo inteiro, e não só põe em chamas toda a carreira da existência humana, como também ela mesma é posta em chamas pelo inferno. 7 Pois toda espécie de animais, de aves, de répteis e de seres marinhos se doma e tem sido domada pelo gênero humano, 8 mas a língua ninguém é capaz de domar; é mal incontido, cheio de veneno mortal. 9 Com ela, bendizemos o Senhor e Pai; também, com ela, amaldiçoamos as pessoas, criadas à semelhança de Deus. 10 De uma só boca procede bênção e maldição. Meus irmãos, isso não deveria ser assim. 11 Por acaso pode a fonte jorrar do mesmo lugar água doce e água amarga? 12 Meus irmãos, será que a figueira pode produzir azeitonas ou a videira, figos? Assim, também, uma fonte de água salgada não pode dar água doce.

13 Quem entre vocês é sábio e inteligente? Mostre as suas obras em mansidão de sabedoria, mediante a sua boa conduta. 14 Se, pelo contrário, vocês têm em seu coração inveja amargurada e sentimento de rivalidade, não se gloriem disso, nem mintam contra a verdade. 15 Esta não é a sabedoria que desce lá do alto; pelo contrário, é terrena, animal e demoníaca. 16 Pois, onde há inveja e rivalidade, aí há confusão e toda espécie de coisas ruins. 17 Mas a sabedoria lá do alto é, primeiramente, pura; depois, pacífica, gentil, amigável, cheia de misericórdia e de bons frutos, imparcial, sem fingimento. 18 Ora, é em paz que se semeia o fruto da justiça, para os que promovem a paz.

1 Be not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment. 2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. 3 Now if we put the horses’ bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. 4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. 5 So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: 8 but the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: 10 out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter? 12 can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? neither can salt water yield sweet.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.
