1 De onde procedem as guerras e brigas que há entre vocês? De onde, senão dos prazeres que estão em conflito dentro de vocês? 2 Vocês cobiçam e nada têm; matam e sentem inveja, mas nada podem obter; vivem a lutar e a fazer guerras. Nada têm, porque não pedem; 3 pedem e não recebem, porque pedem mal, para esbanjarem em seus prazeres.

4 Gente infiel! Vocês não sabem que a amizade do mundo é inimizade contra Deus? Aquele, pois, que quiser ser amigo do mundo se torna inimigo de Deus. 5 Ou vocês pensam que é em vão que a Escritura diz: "É com ciúme que por nós anseia o Espírito, que ele fez habitar em nós?" 6 Mas ele nos dá cada vez mais graça. Por isso diz: "Deus resiste aos soberbos, mas dá graça aos humildes."

7 Portanto, sujeitem-se a Deus, mas resistam ao diabo, e ele fugirá de vocês. 8 Cheguem perto de Deus, e ele se chegará a vocês. Limpem as mãos, pecadores! E vocês que são indecisos, purifiquem o coração. 9 Reconheçam a sua miséria, lamentem e chorem. Que o riso de vocês se transforme em pranto, e que a alegria de vocês se transforme em tristeza. 10 Humilhem-se diante do Senhor, e ele os exaltará.

11 Irmãos, não falem mal uns dos outros. Aquele que fala mal do irmão ou julga o seu irmão fala mal da lei e julga a lei; ora, se você julga a lei, não é observador da lei, mas juiz. 12 Um só é Legislador e Juiz, aquele que pode salvar e fazer perecer. Mas quem é você para julgar o seu próximo?

13 Escutem, agora, vocês que dizem: "Hoje ou amanhã, iremos para a cidade tal, e lá passaremos um ano, e faremos negócios, e teremos lucros." 14 Vocês não sabem o que acontecerá amanhã. O que é a vida de vocês? Vocês não passam de neblina que aparece por um instante e logo se dissipa. 15 Em vez disso, deveriam dizer: "Se Deus quiser, não só viveremos, como também faremos isto ou aquilo." 16 Agora, entretanto, vocês se orgulham das suas arrogantes pretensões. Todo orgulho semelhante a esse é mau. 17 Portanto, aquele que sabe que deve fazer o bem e não o faz, nisso está pecando.

1 Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members? 2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in your pleasures. 4 Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. 5 Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. 7 Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

11 Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 One only is the lawgiver and judge, even he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor?

13 Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: 14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. 16 But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. 17 To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
