1 Então Salomão congregou os anciãos de Israel, todos os chefes das tribos, os príncipes das famílias dos israelitas, diante de si em Jerusalém, para levarem a arca da aliança do Senhor da Cidade de Davi, que é Sião, para o templo. 2 Todos os homens de Israel se congregaram junto ao rei Salomão na ocasião da festa, no mês de etanim, que é o sétimo. 3 Quando todos os anciãos de Israel chegaram, os sacerdotes pegaram a arca do Senhor 4 e a levaram para cima, com a tenda do encontro e com os utensílios sagrados que nela havia; os sacerdotes e levitas é que levaram tudo isso para o templo. 5 O rei Salomão e toda a congregação de Israel, que se havia reunido diante dele, estavam todos diante da arca, sacrificando ovelhas e bois, que, de tão numerosos, não se podiam contar. 6 Os sacerdotes puseram a arca da aliança do Senhor no seu lugar, no santuário mais interior do templo, que é o Santo dos Santos, debaixo das asas dos querubins. 7 Pois os querubins estendiam as asas sobre o lugar da arca e, do alto, cobriam a arca e os seus cabos. 8 Os cabos sobressaíam tanto, que suas pontas eram vistas do Santo Lugar, diante do Santo dos Santos; porém de fora não podiam ser vistos. E ali estão até o dia de hoje. 9 Nada havia na arca a não ser as duas tábuas de pedra que Moisés havia colocado ali em Horebe, quando o Senhor fez aliança com os filhos de Israel, ao saírem da terra do Egito.

10 Quando os sacerdotes saíram do santuário, uma nuvem encheu a Casa do Senhor, 11 de maneira que os sacerdotes não puderam permanecer ali para ministrar, por causa da nuvem, porque a glória do Senhor encheu a Casa do Senhor.

12 Então Salomão disse:

— O Senhor declarou que habitaria em trevas espessas. 13 Na verdade, edifiquei uma casa para tua morada, lugar para a tua eterna habitação.

14 Depois o rei voltou o rosto e abençoou toda a congregação de Israel, que se mantinha toda em pé. 15 Salomão disse:

— Bendito seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, que falou pessoalmente com Davi, meu pai, e pelo seu poder cumpriu o que prometeu, dizendo: 16 "Desde o dia em que tirei o meu povo de Israel do Egito, não escolhi cidade alguma de todas as tribos de Israel para edificar um templo a fim de ali estabelecer o meu nome. Porém escolhi Davi para governar o meu povo de Israel."

17 — Também Davi, meu pai, havia proposto em seu coração edificar um templo ao nome do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. 18 Porém o Senhor disse a Davi, meu pai: "Você fez bem quando resolveu em seu coração edificar um templo ao meu nome. 19 Todavia, não será você quem edificará esse templo; o seu filho, que descenderá de você, ele o edificará ao meu nome." 20 Assim, o Senhor cumpriu a palavra que tinha dito, pois me levantei em lugar de Davi, meu pai, e me assentei no trono de Israel, como o Senhor havia prometido, e edifiquei o templo ao nome do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. 21 E nele preparei um lugar para a arca, em que estão as tábuas da aliança que o Senhor fez com os nossos pais, quando os tirou da terra do Egito.

22 Salomão se pôs diante do altar do Senhor, na presença de toda a congregação de Israel, estendeu as mãos para os céus 23 e disse:

— Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, não há Deus como tu, em cima nos céus nem embaixo na terra! Tu guardas a aliança e a misericórdia aos teus servos que de todo o coração andam diante de ti. 24 Cumpriste para com o teu servo Davi, meu pai, o que lhe prometeste; pessoalmente o disseste e pelo teu poder o cumpriste, como hoje se vê. 25 Agora, pois, ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, cumpre a outra promessa que fizeste a teu servo Davi, meu pai, quando declaraste, dizendo: "Nunca lhe faltará sucessor diante de mim, que se assente no trono de Israel, contanto que os seus filhos guardem o seu caminho, para andarem diante de mim como você andou." 26 Agora também, ó Deus de Israel, que se cumpra a palavra que disseste a teu servo Davi, meu pai.

27 — Mas será que, de fato, Deus poderia habitar na terra? Eis que os céus e até o céu dos céus não te podem conter, muito menos este templo que eu edifiquei. 28 Atenta, pois, para a oração de teu servo e para a sua súplica, ó Senhor, meu Deus, ouvindo o clamor e a oração que faz hoje o teu servo diante de ti. 29 Que os teus olhos estejam abertos noite e dia sobre este templo, sobre este lugar do qual disseste: "O meu nome estará ali", para ouvires a oração que o teu servo fizer neste lugar. 30 Ouve, pois, a súplica do teu servo e do teu povo de Israel, quando orarem neste lugar. Ouve no céu, lugar da tua habitação; ouve e perdoa.

31 — Se alguém pecar contra o seu próximo, e lhe for exigido que jure, e ele vier jurar diante do teu altar, neste templo, 32 ouve tu nos céus, age e julga os teus servos, condenando o ímpio, fazendo com que pague por seus atos, e justificando o justo, para lhe retribuíres segundo a sua justiça.

33 — Quando o teu povo de Israel, por ter pecado contra ti, for derrotado por um inimigo, e se converter a ti, confessar o teu nome, orar e suplicar a ti, neste templo, 34 ouve tu nos céus, perdoa o pecado do teu povo de Israel e faze-o voltar à terra que deste aos seus pais.

35 — Quando o céu se fechar, e não houver chuva, por ter o povo pecado contra ti, e ele orar neste lugar, confessar o teu nome e se converter dos seus pecados, depois de o haveres castigado, 36 ouve tu nos céus, perdoa o pecado de teus servos e do teu povo de Israel, ensinando-lhes o bom caminho em que devem andar, e envia chuva sobre esta tua terra, que deste em herança ao teu povo.

37 — Quando houver fome na terra ou peste, quando houver crestamento ou ferrugem, gafanhotos e larvas, quando inimigos cercarem as cidades do país ou houver alguma praga ou doença, 38 toda oração e súplica que qualquer homem ou todo o teu povo de Israel fizer, conhecendo cada um a ferida do seu coração e estendendo as mãos na direção deste templo, 39 ouve tu nos céus, lugar da tua habitação, perdoa, age e dá a cada um segundo todos os seus caminhos, visto que lhe conheces o coração, porque tu, só tu, és conhecedor do coração de todos os filhos dos homens; 40 para que te temam todos os dias que viverem na terra que deste aos nossos pais.

41 — Também ao estrangeiro, que não for do teu povo de Israel, porém vier de uma terra distante, por amor do teu nome 42 — porque ouvirão do teu grande nome, e da tua mão poderosa, e do teu braço estendido —, e orar, voltado para este templo, 43 ouve tu nos céus, lugar da tua habitação, e faze tudo o que o estrangeiro te pedir, a fim de que todos os povos da terra conheçam o teu nome, para te temerem como o teu povo de Israel e para saberem que este templo, que eu edifiquei, é chamado pelo teu nome.

44 — Quando o teu povo sair à guerra contra o seu inimigo, pelo caminho por onde os enviares, e orarem ao Senhor, voltados para esta cidade, que tu escolheste, e para este templo que edifiquei ao teu nome, 45 ouve tu nos céus a sua oração e a sua súplica e faze-lhes justiça.

46 — Quando pecarem contra ti — pois não há ninguém que não peque —, e tu te indignares contra eles e os entregares às mãos do inimigo, a fim de que os leve cativos à terra inimiga, longe ou perto daqui; 47 e se, na terra aonde forem levados cativos, caírem em si e se converterem, e, na terra do seu cativeiro, te suplicarem, dizendo: "Pecamos, procedemos mal e cometemos iniquidade"; 48 e se eles se converterem a ti de todo o seu coração e de toda a sua alma, na terra de seus inimigos que os levarem cativos, e orarem a ti, voltados para a sua terra, que deste aos seus pais, para esta cidade que escolheste e para o templo que edifiquei ao teu nome, 49 ouve tu nos céus, lugar da tua habitação, a sua prece e a sua súplica e faze-lhes justiça; 50 perdoa ao teu povo, que houver pecado contra ti, todas as suas transgressões que houverem cometido contra ti; e move tu à compaixão os que os levaram cativos, para que se compadeçam deles. 51 Porque é o teu povo e a tua herança, que tiraste da terra do Egito, do meio da fornalha de ferro; 52 para que os teus olhos estejam abertos à súplica do teu servo e à súplica do teu povo de Israel, a fim de os ouvires em tudo o que clamarem a ti. 53 Pois tu, ó Senhor Deus, os separaste dentre todos os povos da terra para serem a tua herança, como falaste por meio do teu servo Moisés, quando tiraste do Egito os nossos pais.

54 Quando Salomão acabou de fazer ao Senhor toda esta oração e súplica, ele se levantou de diante do altar do Senhor, onde tinha se ajoelhado com as mãos estendidas para os céus. 55 Ele se pôs em pé e abençoou toda a congregação de Israel em alta voz, dizendo:

56 — Bendito seja o Senhor, que deu repouso ao seu povo de Israel, segundo tudo o que havia prometido! Nem uma só palavra falhou de todas as boas promessas que fez por meio de Moisés, seu servo. 57 Que o Senhor, nosso Deus, esteja conosco, assim como esteve com os nossos pais. Que ele não nos deixe nem nos abandone! 58 Que ele faça com que o nosso coração se incline para ele, a fim de andarmos em todos os seus caminhos e guardarmos os seus mandamentos, e os seus estatutos, e os seus juízos, que ordenou aos nossos pais. 59 Que estas minhas palavras, com que supliquei diante do Senhor, estejam presentes, diante do Senhor, nosso Deus, de dia e de noite, para que ele faça justiça ao seu servo e ao seu povo de Israel, segundo cada dia o exigir, 60 para que todos os povos da terra saibam que o Senhor é Deus e que não há outro. 61 Que o coração de vocês seja fiel para com o Senhor, nosso Deus, para andarem nos seus estatutos e guardarem os seus mandamentos, como vocês estão fazendo hoje.

62 Então o rei e todo o Israel com ele ofereceram sacrifícios ao Senhor. 63 Salomão ofereceu em sacrifício pacífico ao Senhor vinte e dois mil bois e cento e vinte mil ovelhas. Assim, o rei e todos os filhos de Israel consagraram a Casa do Senhor. 64 No mesmo dia, o rei consagrou o meio do átrio que estava diante da Casa do Senhor, pois ali ofereceu os holocaustos e as ofertas com a gordura dos sacrifícios pacíficos. Ele fez isso porque o altar de bronze que estava diante do Senhor era muito pequeno para nele caberem os holocaustos, as ofertas de cereais e a gordura dos sacrifícios pacíficos.

65 Nesse tempo, Salomão celebrou a festa, e todo o Israel com ele, uma grande congregação, desde a entrada de Hamate até o rio do Egito, diante do Senhor, nosso Deus. Celebraram durante sete dias além dos primeiros sete, a saber, catorze dias.

66 No oitavo dia desta festa, Salomão despediu o povo, e eles abençoaram o rei. Então voltaram para as suas tendas, alegres e de coração contente por causa de todo o bem que o Senhor tinha feito a Davi, seu servo, e a Israel, seu povo.

1 King Solomon summoned all the leaders of the tribes and clans of Israel to come to him in Jerusalem. They were to take Jehovah’s Ark of the Covenant from Zion, David's City, to the Temple.2 They all assembled during the festival. It was the seventh month, the month of Ethanim.3 As soon as all the elders gathered, the priests lifted the Ark4 and carried it to the Temple. The Levites and the priests also moved the Tent of Jehovah’s presence and all its equipment to the Temple.5 King Solomon and all the people of Israel assembled in front of the Ark and sacrificed a large number of sheep and cattle, too many to count.6 Then the priests carried the Ark of the Covenant into the Temple and put it in the Most Holy Place, beneath the cherubim angel.7 Their outstretched wings covered the box and the poles it was carried by.8 The ends of the poles could be seen by anyone standing directly in front of the Most Holy Place, but from nowhere else.9 There was nothing inside the Ark of the Covenant except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed there at Mount Sinai, when Jehovah made a covenant with the people of Israel as they were coming from Egypt.10 As the priests were leaving the Temple, it was suddenly filled with a cloud.11 It shined with the dazzling light of Jehovah’s presence. They could not go back in to perform their duties.12 Solomon prayed: »Jehovah, you have placed the sun in the sky, yet you have chosen to live in clouds and darkness.13 »Now I have built a majestic temple for you, a place for you to live in for a very long time.«14 King Solomon turned to face the people standing there. He asked God's blessing on them.15 He said: »Praise Jehovah the God of Israel! He kept the promise he made to my father David, when he told him:16 »‘Since the time I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen any city in all the land of Israel in which a temple should be built where I would be worshiped. But I chose you, David, to rule my people.’«17 Solomon continued: »My father David planned to build a temple for the worship of Jehovah the God of Israel,18 »‘Jehovah said to him: ‘You were right in wanting to build a temple for me.19 »‘However you will never build it. It is your son who will build my temple.’«20 »Now Jehovah has kept his promise. I have succeeded my father as king of Israel. And I have built the Temple for the worship of Jehovah the God of Israel.21 »I also provided a place in the Temple for the Ark of the Covenant containing the stone tablets of the covenant Jehovah made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.«22 In the presence of the people Solomon stood in front of the altar. He raised his arms23 and prayed: »Jehovah God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven above or on earth below! You keep your covenant with your people and show them your love when they live in wholehearted obedience to you.24 »You kept the promise you made to my father David. Every word has been fulfilled.25 »Jehovah, God of Israel, I pray that you will also keep the other promise you made to my father when you told him there would always be one of his descendants ruling as king of Israel, provided they obeyed you as carefully as he did.26 »So now, O God of Israel, let your word come true that you promised to my father David, your servant.27 »Can you, O God, really live on earth? Not even heaven or the heaven of heavens is large enough to hold you. How can this Temple I have built be large enough?28 »Jehovah my God, I am your servant. Listen to my prayer. Grant the requests I make to you today.29 »Watch over this Temple day and night. For this is the place where you have chosen to be worshiped. Hear me when I face this Temple and pray.30 »Hear my prayers and the prayers of your people. In your home in heaven hear us and forgive us.31 »When a person is accused of wronging another and is brought to your altar in this Temple to take an oath that he is innocent,32 »O Jehovah, listen in heaven and judge your servants. Punish the guilty one, as he deserves. Justify the one who is innocent.33 »When your people Israel have sinned against you their enemies defeat them. They can turn to you and come to this Temple, humbly praying to you for forgiveness.34 Listen to them in heaven. Forgive the sins of your people and bring them back to the land that you gave to their ancestors.35 »When you hold back the rain because your people have sinned against you. And when they repent in this Temple, humbly praying to you,36 listen to them in heaven. Forgive the sins of the king and of the people of Israel, and teach them to do what is right. Then, O Jehovah, send rain on this land of yours, which you gave to your people as a permanent possession.37 »When there is famine in the land or an epidemic or scorching winds or swarms of locusts, or when their enemies attack your people, or when disease or sickness among them destroys the crops,38 listen to their prayers. If any of your people Israel, out of heartfelt sorrow, stretch out their hands in prayer toward this Temple,39 hear their prayer. Listen to them in your home in heaven, help them and forgive them. You alone know the thoughts of the human heart. Deal with each person, as he deserves,40 so that your people may obey you all the time they live in the land you gave to our ancestors.41 »When a foreigner who lives in a distant land hears of your fame and of the great things you have done for your people and comes to worship you and to pray at this Temple,42 »For they will have news of your great name and your strong hand and your out-stretched arm. When he comes to pray in this house:43 »Listen to him and give him his desire. Let all the peoples of the earth know about your name. Let them worship you as your people Israel, and that they may see that this house which I have built is truly named by your name.44 »When your people go to war against their enemies, they pray to you, O Jehovah, toward the city you have chosen and the temple I built for your name.45 »Hear their prayer for mercy in heaven, and do what is right for them.46 »They may sin against you, for everyone sins. You may become angry with them and hand them over to an enemy far or near who takes them to another country as captives.47 »If they come to their senses and are sorry for what they have done, and plead with you in the land where they are captives, saying: We have sinned. We have done wrong. We have been wicked.48 »If they change their attitude toward you in the land of their enemies where they are captives, if they pray to you toward the land that you gave their ancestors, and the city you have chosen, and the temple I have built for your name,49 then in heaven, the place where you live, hear their prayer for mercy. Do what is right for them.50 »Forgive your people, who have sinned against you. Forgive all their wrongs when they rebelled against you. Cause those who captured them to have mercy on them.51 »They are your own people. You brought them out of Egypt from the middle of an iron smelter.52 »May your eyes always see my plea and your people Israel's plea so that you will listen to them whenever they call on you.53 »You Jehovah set them apart from all the people of the world. They are your own as you promised through your servant Moses when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt.«54 When Solomon finished praying this prayer for mercy to Jehovah, he stood in front of Jehovah’s altar, where he had been kneeling with his hands stretched out toward heaven.55 Then he stood and in a loud voice blessed the entire assembly of Israel:56 "THANKS TO JEHOVAH! He has given his people Israel rest, as he has promised. None of the good promises he made through his servant Moses has failed to come true.57 »May Jehovah our God be with us as he was with our ancestors. May he not leave us or abandon us.58 »May he bend our hearts toward him. Then we will follow him and obey his commands, laws, and rules, which he commanded our ancestors to obey.59 »May these words I have prayed to Jehovah be near Jehovah our God day and night. Then he will give his people Israel and me justice every day as it is needed.60 »In this way all the people of the earth may know that Jehovah is God and there is no other god.61 »Let your hearts be committed to Jehovah our God. Then you will live by his laws and keep his commands as you have today.«62 Then the king and all Israel offered sacrifices to Jehovah.63 Solomon sacrificed twenty-two thousand cattle and one hundred twenty thousand sheep as fellowship offerings to Jehovah. So the king and all the people of Israel dedicated Jehovah’s Temple.64 On that day the king designated the courtyard in front of Jehovah’s Temple as a holy place. He sacrificed the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and the fat from the fellowship offerings because the copper altar in front of Jehovah was too small to hold all of them.65 At that time Solomon and all Israel celebrated the festival. A large crowd had come from the territory between the border of Hamath and the River of Egypt to be near Jehovah our God for seven days.66 On the eighth day he dismissed the people. They blessed the king and went to their tents. They rejoiced with cheerful hearts for all the blessings Jehovah had given his servant David and his people Israel.
