1 A boa fama é melhor
do que um bom perfume,
e o dia da morte é melhor
do que o dia do nascimento.
2 Melhor é ir à casa onde há luto
do que ir à casa onde há banquete,
pois naquela se vê o fim
de todas as pessoas;
e que os vivos o tomem
em consideração.
3 Melhor é a mágoa do que o riso,
porque com a tristeza do rosto
se melhora o coração.
4 O coração dos sábios
está na casa do luto,
mas o dos insensatos,
na casa da alegria.
5 Melhor é ouvir
a repreensão do sábio
do que ouvir a canção dos tolos.
6 Pois, como o crepitar dos espinhos
debaixo de uma panela,
assim é a risada dos tolos.
Também isto é vaidade.
7 Certamente a opressão
faz do sábio um tolo,
e o suborno corrompe o coração.
8 Melhor é o fim das coisas
do que o seu princípio;
a paciência é melhor
do que a arrogância.
9 Não se apresse em ficar irado,
porque a ira se abriga
no íntimo dos tolos.
10 Nunca pergunte: "Por que
os dias passados foram
melhores que os de agora?"
Pois não é sábio fazer essa pergunta.
11 Boa é a sabedoria,
havendo herança;
ela é proveitosa
para os que veem o sol.
12 A sabedoria protege,
do mesmo modo que o dinheiro;
mas a vantagem da sabedoria
é que ela dá vida
a quem a possui.
13 Observe as obras de Deus,
pois quem poderá endireitar
o que ele fez torto?
14 No dia da prosperidade, seja feliz;
mas, no dia da adversidade,
considere que Deus fez
tanto este como aquele,
para que o ser humano
não descubra nada
do que há de vir depois dele.
15 Tudo isto vi nos dias da minha vaidade: há justos que perecem na sua justiça, e há ímpios que prolongam os seus dias na sua maldade. 16 Não seja demasiadamente justo, nem exageradamente sábio; por que você destruiria a si mesmo? 17 Não seja demasiadamente perverso, nem seja tolo; por que você morreria antes da sua hora? 18 Bom é que você retenha isto e também não abra mão daquilo; pois quem teme a Deus sai ileso de tudo isto.
19 A sabedoria fortalece o sábio, mais do que dez poderosos que se encontram numa cidade.
20 Não há nenhum justo sobre a terra que faça o bem e que não peque.
21 Não dê atenção a todas as palavras que se dizem, para que você não venha a ouvir o seu servo amaldiçoando você. 22 E você sabe que muitas vezes você mesmo já amaldiçoou os outros.
23 Tudo isto examinei por meio da sabedoria. Eu disse: "Serei sábio." Mas a sabedoria estava longe de mim. 24 O que está longe e é muito profundo, quem o poderá encontrar? 25 Procurei conhecer, investigar, buscar a sabedoria e a razão, e compreender que a maldade é estupidez e a tolice é loucura.
26 Achei coisa mais amarga do que a morte: a mulher cujo coração é rede e armadilha e cujas mãos são correntes. Quem agrada a Deus fugirá dela, mas o pecador virá a ser seu prisioneiro.
27 Eis o que descobri, diz o Pregador, conferindo uma coisa com outra, para a respeito delas formar o meu juízo, 28 juízo que ainda procuro e não encontrei: entre mil homens achei um como esperava, mas entre tantas mulheres não achei nem sequer uma. 29 O que descobri é tão somente isto: que Deus fez o ser humano reto, mas ele se meteu em muitos problemas.

1 A good name honorrenownreputation is better than pleasant ointment and the day of death than the day of one's birth.2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting. That is the end for all men and the living takes it to heart.3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness the appearance of the heart is made better.4 The heart feelings of the wise is in the house of mourning. The heart of fools is in the house of rejoicing.5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.7 Oppression makes a wise man foolish emotionally unstablementally ill and a bribe destroys the heart.8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.9 Do not be quick in your spirit mindfigurative heart to be angry. Anger rests in the bosom of fools.10 Do not ask: »Why were the old days better then these?« You do not inquire wisely about this.11 Wisdom is good as an inheritance: It is an advantage to those who see the sun.12 Wisdom is a shelter just as money is a shelter. The advantage of knowledge is that wisdom gives lift to those who have it.13 Consider the work of God. Who can make straight what he has made crooked?14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider that God made one as well as the other, to the end that man should find nothing that comes after him.15 I have seen all things in the days of my vanity. There is a just man who perished in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolonged his life in his wickedness.16 Do not be righteous over much and do not be wise over much. Why should you destroy yourself?17 Do not be wicked over much and do not be foolish. Why should you die before your time?18 It is good that you should take hold of this and also from this not withdraw your hand, for he who respects God will come forth from them all.19 Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men who are in the city.20 There is no man on earth who is righteous and does not sin.21 Do not pay attention to everything that is said lest you hear your servant curse you.22 Often your own heart knows you have also cursed others.23 I have tried and proved all this by wisdom. I said: »I will be wise« but it was far from me.24 That which is far off, and exceedingly deep, who can find it out?25 I applied my heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom. I looked for the explanation, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness.26 I find what was worse than death is the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands are chains. He who pleases God will escape from her. But she will capture the sinner.27 »Behold, this I have found,« says the preacher, »counting one by one to find out the account:«28 For I am still seeking and have not found. One man among a thousand I have found; but a woman among all those I have not found.29 »You see! I have found only this, that God made man upright. But they have sought out many devices schemesreasonings.«
