1 Estes são os chefes de famílias e esta é a genealogia dos que voltaram comigo da Babilônia, no reinado do rei Artaxerxes: 2 dos filhos de Fineias, Gérson; dos filhos de Itamar, Daniel; dos filhos de Davi, Hatus; 3 dos filhos de Secanias, dos filhos de Parós, Zacarias, e com ele foram registrados cento e cinquenta homens. 4 Dos filhos de Paate-Moabe, Elioenai, filho de Zeraías, e, com ele, duzentos homens. 5 Dos filhos de Secanias, o filho de Jaaziel, e, com ele, trezentos homens. 6 Dos filhos de Adim, Ebede, filho de Jônatas, e, com ele, cinquenta homens. 7 Dos filhos de Elão, Jesaías, filho de Atalias, e, com ele, setenta homens. 8 Dos filhos de Sefatias, Zebadias, filho de Micael, e, com ele, oitenta homens. 9 Dos filhos de Joabe, Obadias, filho de Jeiel, e, com ele, duzentos e dezoito homens. 10 Dos filhos de Bani, Selomite, filho de Josifias, e, com ele, cento e sessenta homens. 11 Dos filhos de Bebai, Zacarias, o filho de Bebai, e, com ele, vinte e oito homens. 12 Dos filhos de Azgade, Joanã, o filho de Hacatã, e, com ele, cento e dez homens. 13 Dos filhos de Adonicão, últimos a chegar, seus nomes eram estes: Elifelete, Jeiel e Semaías, e, com eles, sessenta homens. 14 Dos filhos de Bigvai, Utai e Zabude, e, com eles, setenta homens.

15 Eu os reuni perto do rio que corre para Aava, onde ficamos acampados três dias. Atentando para o povo e para os sacerdotes e não tendo achado nenhum dos filhos de Levi, 16 mandei chamar Eliézer, Ariel, Semaías, Elnatã, Jaribe, Elnatã, Natã, Zacarias e Mesulão, os chefes, bem como Joiaribe e Elnatã, que eram sábios. 17 Eu os enviei a Ido, chefe em Casifia, e lhes dei as palavras que deveriam dizer a Ido e aos servidores do templo, seus irmãos, em Casifia, para que nos enviassem ministros para o templo do nosso Deus. 18 E, como a mão bondosa de Deus estava sobre nós, eles nos enviaram um homem sábio, dos filhos de Mali, filho de Levi, filho de Israel, a saber, Serebias, com os seus filhos e irmãos, em número de dezoito. 19 Também mandaram Hasabias e, com ele, Jesaías, dos filhos de Merari, com os seus irmãos e os filhos deles, em número de vinte. 20 E dos servidores do templo, que Davi e os príncipes haviam escolhido para ajudar os levitas, duzentos e vinte, todos eles mencionados nominalmente.

21 Então ali, junto ao rio Aava, proclamei um jejum, para nos humilharmos diante do nosso Deus, para lhe pedirmos uma boa viagem para nós, para os nossos filhos e para tudo o que era nosso. 22 Porque tive vergonha de pedir ao rei exército e cavaleiros para nos defenderem do inimigo no caminho, porque já lhe havíamos dito: "A mão do nosso Deus está sobre todos os que o buscam, para o bem deles; mas a sua força e a sua ira são contra todos os que o abandonam." 23 Assim nós jejuamos e pedimos isto ao nosso Deus, e ele nos atendeu.

24 Então separei doze dos principais sacerdotes, isto é, Serebias, Hasabias e dez dos seus irmãos. 25 Pesei-lhes a prata, o ouro e os utensílios que o rei, os seus conselheiros, os seus príncipes e todo o Israel que ali estava tinham contribuído para o templo do nosso Deus. 26 Entreguei-lhes nas mãos vinte e dois mil quilos de prata, três mil e quatrocentos quilos em objetos de prata e três mil e quatrocentos quilos de ouro. 27 Além disso, entreguei vinte taças de ouro de oito quilos e meio e dois objetos de bronze lustroso e fino, tão precioso como ouro.

28 Então eu lhes disse:

— Vocês são santos ao Senhor, e santos são estes objetos, bem como esta prata e este ouro, oferta voluntária ao Senhor, Deus dos seus pais. 29 Vigiem e guardem essas coisas até que as pesem na presença dos principais sacerdotes, dos levitas e dos chefes de famílias de Israel, em Jerusalém, nas câmaras da Casa do Senhor.

30 Então os sacerdotes e os levitas receberam a prata, o ouro e os objetos, para os trazerem a Jerusalém, ao templo do nosso Deus.

31 Partimos do rio Aava no dia doze do primeiro mês, a fim de irmos para Jerusalém. E a mão do nosso Deus estava sobre nós e nos livrou das mãos dos inimigos e dos que nos armavam ciladas pelo caminho. 32 Chegamos a Jerusalém e descansamos três dias. 33 No quarto dia, pesamos, no templo do nosso Deus, a prata, o ouro e os objetos e os entregamos a Meremote, filho do sacerdote Urias. Com ele estavam Eleazar, filho de Fineias, e os levitas Jozabade, filho de Jesua, e Noadias, filho de Binui. 34 Tudo foi contado e pesado, e o peso total foi imediatamente registrado.

35 Os exilados que voltaram do cativeiro ofereceram holocaustos ao Deus de Israel: doze novilhos por todo o Israel, noventa e seis carneiros, setenta e sete cordeiros e, como oferta pelo pecado, doze bodes; tudo em holocausto ao Senhor. 36 Então deram as ordens do rei aos seus sátrapas e aos governadores da região deste lado do Eufrates, e estes ajudaram o povo na reconstrução da Casa de Deus.

We were there in tents for three days. And after viewing the people and the priests I saw that no sons of Levi were there.16 Then I sent for Eliezer and Ariel and Shemaiah and Elnathan Jarib and Elnathan and Nathan and Zechariah and Meshullam, all responsible men; and for Joiarib and Elnathan, who were wise men.17 I sent them to Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and gave them orders what to say to Iddo and his brothers the Nethinim at the place Casiphia, so that they might come back to us with men to do the work of the house of our God.18 With the help of our God they got for us Ish-sechel, one of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah with his sons and brothers, eighteen;19 And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty;20 Of the Nethinim, to whom David and the captains had given the work of helping the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinim, all of them specially named.21 Then I gave orders for a time of going without food, there by the Ahava River, so that we might make ourselves low before our God in prayer, requesting from him a safe journey for us and for our little ones and for all our substance.22 I would not make request to the king for a band of armed men and horsemen to give us help against those who might attack us on the way. We said to the king: »The hand powerprotection of our God is on his servants for good, but his power and his wrath are against all those who have turned away from him.«23 So we went without food, requesting our God for this: and his ear was open to our prayer.24 I put on one side twelve of the chiefs of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers with them,25 I gave to them by weight the silver and the gold and the vessels, all the offering for the house of our God that the king and his wise men and his captains and all Israel there present had given:26 Measuring into their hands six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels, a hundred talents' weight, and a hundred talents of gold,27 And twenty gold basins, of a thousand darics, and two vessels of the best bright brass, equal in value to gold.28 I said to them: »You are holy to Jehovah and the vessels are holy. The silver and the gold are an offering freely given to Jehovah, the God of your fathers.29 »Take care of them and keep them, till you put them on the scales before the chiefs of the priests and the Levites and the chiefs of the families of Israel, in Jerusalem, in the rooms of the house of Jehovah.«30 So the priests and the Levites took the weight of silver and gold and the vessels, to take them to Jerusalem into the house of our God.31 Then we went away from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us. He gave us salvation from our enemies and those who were waiting to attack us on the way.32 We went to Jerusalem and were there for three days.33 On the fourth day, the silver and the gold and the vessels were measured out by weight in the house of our God into the hands of Meremoth, the son of Uriah, the priest; and with him was Eleazar, the son of Phinehas; and with them were Jozabad, the son of Jeshua, and Obadiah, the son of Binnui, the Levites.34 All was handed over by number and by weight: and the weight was put on record at that time.35 Those who had been prisoners, who had come back from a strange land, made burned offerings to the God of Israel, twelve oxen for all Israel, ninety-six male sheep, seventy-seven lambs, twelve he-goats for a sin-offering: all this was a burned offering to Jehovah.36 They gave the king's orders to the king's captains and the rulers across the river. They gave the people and the house of God the help that was needed.
