1 No décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Jeroboão, Abias começou a reinar sobre Judá. Ele reinou três anos em Jerusalém. 2 A mãe dele se chamava Micaía e era filha de Uriel, de Gibeá. Também houve guerra entre Abias e Jeroboão. 3 Abias começou a guerra com um exército de valentes guerreiros, de quatrocentos mil homens escolhidos, e Jeroboão pôs em ordem de batalha contra ele um exército de oitocentos mil homens escolhidos, todos valentes guerreiros. 4 Abias pôs-se em pé no alto do monte Zemaraim, que está na região montanhosa de Efraim, e gritou:

— Jeroboão e todo o Israel, escutem o que vou dizer! 5 Será que vocês não sabem que o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, deu para sempre a Davi a soberania de Israel, a ele e aos seus filhos, por uma aliança perpétua? 6 Contudo, Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, servo de Salomão, filho de Davi, se levantou e se rebelou contra o seu senhor. 7 Juntaram-se a ele uns homens vadios e malignos, que desafiaram Roboão, filho de Salomão. Como Roboão era ainda jovem e indeciso, não lhes pôde resistir. 8 Agora vocês pensam que podem resistir ao reino do Senhor, que está nas mãos dos filhos de Davi. Vocês são uma grande multidão e estão trazendo com vocês os bezerros de ouro que Jeroboão fez para serem os seus deuses. 9 Não é verdade que vocês expulsaram os sacerdotes do Senhor, os filhos de Arão e os levitas, e escolheram para si outros sacerdotes, como fazem os povos das outras terras? Qualquer um que vem para consagrar-se com um novilho e sete carneiros logo se torna sacerdote daqueles que não são deuses.

10 — Quanto a nós, o Senhor é o nosso Deus, e nunca o abandonamos. Temos sacerdotes, que ministram ao Senhor, a saber, os filhos de Arão e os levitas na sua obra. 11 Cada dia, de manhã e à tarde, oferecem holocaustos e queimam incenso aromático, colocando em ordem os pães da proposição sobre a mesa puríssima e o candelabro de ouro e as suas lâmpadas para se acenderem cada tarde, porque nós guardamos o preceito do Senhor, nosso Deus, ao passo que vocês o abandonaram. 12 Eis que Deus está conosco, à nossa frente, e também os seus sacerdotes, tocando com as trombetas, para darem o grito de guerra contra vocês, ó filhos de Israel. Não lutem contra o Senhor, o Deus de seus pais, porque vocês não serão bem-sucedidos.

13 Mas Jeroboão ordenou aos que estavam de emboscada que fizessem uma volta e atacassem o exército de Abias pela retaguarda, de maneira que o seu exército estava em frente dos homens de Judá, e a emboscada vinha por detrás deles. 14 Quando os homens de Judá olharam, viram que a batalha estava por diante e por detrás. Então clamaram ao Senhor, e os sacerdotes tocaram as trombetas. 15 Os homens de Judá gritaram. Quando gritavam, Deus derrotou Jeroboão e todo o Israel diante de Abias e de Judá. 16 Os filhos de Israel fugiram de diante de Judá, e Deus os entregou nas suas mãos. 17 Abias e o seu povo fizeram grande matança entre eles, de maneira que morreram quinhentos mil homens escolhidos de Israel. 18 Assim, os filhos de Israel foram humilhados naquele tempo, e os filhos de Judá prevaleceram, porque confiaram no Senhor, Deus de seus pais.

19 Abias perseguiu Jeroboão e lhe tomou as cidades de Betel, Jesana e Efrom, com as suas respectivas vilas. 20 Jeroboão não restaurou mais o seu poder no tempo de Abias. O Senhor feriu Jeroboão, e ele morreu. 21 Abias, porém, se fortificou. Tomou para si catorze mulheres, e gerou vinte e dois filhos e dezesseis filhas.

22 Quanto aos demais atos de Abias, tanto o que fez como o que disse, está tudo escrito no Livro da História do Profeta Ido.

1 In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah. 2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3 Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valor. 4 Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, "Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel: 5 Ought you not to know that Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? 6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord. 7 Worthless men were gathered to him, wicked fellows who strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender hearted, and could not withstand them.

8 "Now you intend to withstand the kingdom of Yahweh in the hand of the sons of David. You are a great multitude, and the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods are with you. 9 Haven’t you driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves according to the ways of the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may be a priest of those who are no gods.

10 "But as for us, Yahweh is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests serving Yahweh, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work. 11 They burn to Yahweh every morning and every evening burnt offerings and sweet incense. They also set the show bread in order on the pure table, and care for the gold lamp stand with its lamps, to burn every evening; for we keep the instruction of Yahweh our God, but you have forsaken him. 12 Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, don’t fight against Yahweh, the God of your fathers; for you will not prosper."

13 But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; so they were before Judah, and the ambush was behind them. 14 When Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to Yahweh, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. 15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout. As the men of Judah shouted, God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16 The children of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand. 17 Abijah and his people killed them with a great slaughter, so five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell down slain. 18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on Yahweh, the God of their fathers. 19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam, and took cities from him: Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and Ephron with its villages.

20 Jeroboam didn’t recover strength again in the days of Abijah. Yahweh struck him, and he died. 21 But Abijah grew mighty and took for himself fourteen wives, and became the father of twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. 22 The rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways, and his sayings are written in the commentary of the prophet Iddo.
