1 Josias tinha oito anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou trinta e um anos em Jerusalém. 2 Josias fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, andou nos caminhos de Davi, seu pai, e não se desviou nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.

3 No oitavo ano de seu reinado, sendo ainda moço, Josias começou a buscar o Deus de Davi, seu pai. E, no décimo segundo ano, começou a purificar Judá e Jerusalém dos lugares altos, dos postes da deusa Aserá e das imagens de escultura e de fundição. 4 Na presença dele, derrubaram os altares dos baalins. Ele despedaçou os altares do incenso que estavam acima deles. Quebrou os postes da deusa Aserá e as imagens de escultura e de fundição, reduziu-os a pó e o espalhou sobre as sepulturas dos que tinham oferecido sacrifícios a esses ídolos. 5 Queimou os ossos dos sacerdotes pagãos sobre os altares deles e purificou Judá e Jerusalém. 6 Fez o mesmo nas cidades de Manassés, de Efraim e de Simeão, até Naftali, por todos os lados no meio das suas ruínas. 7 Depois de derrubar os altares, os postes da deusa Aserá e as imagens de escultura, até reduzi-los a pó, e depois de despedaçar todos os altares de incenso em toda a terra de Israel, Josias voltou para Jerusalém.

8 No décimo oitavo ano do seu reinado, havendo já purificado a terra e o templo, Josias ordenou que Safã, filho de Azalias, Maaseias, governador da cidade, e Joá, filho de Joacaz, cronista, reparassem a Casa do Senhor, seu Deus. 9 Foram até o sumo sacerdote Hilquias e entregaram o dinheiro que tinha sido trazido à Casa de Deus e que os levitas, guardas da porta, tinham ajuntado, dinheiro provindo das mãos de Manassés, de Efraim e de todo o resto de Israel, bem como de todo o Judá e Benjamim e dos moradores de Jerusalém. 10 Eles o entregaram aos que dirigiam a obra e tinham a seu encargo a Casa do Senhor, para que pagassem àqueles que faziam a obra, trabalhadores na Casa do Senhor, para repararem e restaurarem o templo. 11 Deram o dinheiro aos carpinteiros e aos construtores, para comprarem pedras lavradas e madeiras para as junções e para servirem de vigas para as casas que os reis de Judá deixaram cair em ruína. 12 Esses homens trabalharam fielmente na obra. Os superintendentes deles eram Jaate e Obadias, levitas, dos filhos de Merari, bem como Zacarias e Mesulão, dos filhos dos coatitas, para supervisionar a obra. 13 Todos os levitas peritos em instrumentos musicais eram superintendentes dos carregadores e dirigiam todos os que faziam a obra, em qualquer tipo de trabalho. Outros levitas eram escrivães, oficiais e porteiros.

14 Enquanto se tirava o dinheiro que havia sido trazido à Casa do Senhor, Hilquias, o sacerdote, achou o Livro da Lei do Senhor, dada por meio de Moisés. 15 Então Hilquias disse ao escrivão Safã:

— Achei o Livro da Lei na Casa do Senhor.

16 Hilquias entregou o livro a Safã. Então Safã levou o livro ao rei e lhe deu relatório, dizendo:

— Tudo o que o senhor, ó rei, encomendou aos seus servos, eles estão fazendo. 17 Contaram o dinheiro que estava na Casa do Senhor e o entregaram nas mãos dos que dirigem a obra e dos que a executam.

18 E o escrivão Safã acrescentou:

— O sacerdote Hilquias me entregou um livro.

E Safã leu o livro em voz alta diante do rei.

19 Quando o rei Josias ouviu as palavras da Lei, rasgou as suas roupas. 20 Então deu ordens a Hilquias, a Aicão, filho de Safã, a Abdom, filho de Mica, a Safã, o escrivão, e a Asaías, servo do rei, dizendo:

21 — Vão consultar o Senhor por mim e pelos que restaram em Israel e Judá, a respeito das palavras deste livro que foi encontrado. Porque é grande o furor do Senhor, que se derramou sobre nós, porque os nossos pais não guardaram a palavra do Senhor, para fazerem segundo tudo o que está escrito neste livro.

22 Então Hilquias e os enviados pelo rei foram falar com a profetisa Hulda, esposa de Salum, encarregado das vestimentas da Casa do Senhor, filho de Tocate, filho de Harás. Hulda morava na parte nova da cidade, em Jerusalém. Eles lhe contaram o que havia acontecido, 23 e ela lhes disse:

— Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: "Digam ao homem que os enviou a mim: 24 ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que trarei desgraça sobre este lugar e sobre os seus moradores, a saber, todas as maldições escritas no livro que leram diante do rei de Judá. 25 Por terem me abandonado e queimado incenso a outros deuses, para me provocarem à ira com todas as obras das suas mãos, o meu furor se derramou sobre este lugar e não se apagará.’ 26 Mas ao rei de Judá, que os enviou para consultar o Senhor, digam o seguinte: ‘Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, a respeito das palavras que você ouviu: 27 Visto que o seu coração se enterneceu e você se humilhou diante de Deus, quando ouviu as ameaças que ele fez contra este lugar e contra os seus moradores, e se humilhou diante de mim, rasgou as suas roupas e chorou diante de mim, também eu ouvi a sua oração, diz o Senhor. 28 Deixarei que você morra e seja sepultado em paz, e os seus olhos não verão todo o mal que trarei sobre este lugar e sobre os seus moradores.’"

Então eles levaram esta resposta ao rei.

29 Então o rei deu ordem, e todos os anciãos de Judá e de Jerusalém se ajuntaram. 30 O rei subiu à Casa do Senhor, e com ele foram todos os homens de Judá, os moradores de Jerusalém, os sacerdotes, os levitas e todo o povo, desde o maior até o menor. E o rei leu diante deles todas as palavras do Livro da Aliança que havia sido encontrado na Casa do Senhor. 31 O rei se pôs em pé no seu lugar e fez aliança diante do Senhor, para o seguir, guardar os seus mandamentos, os seus testemunhos e os seus estatutos, de todo o seu coração e de toda a sua alma, cumprindo as palavras da aliança, que estavam escritas naquele livro. 32 Todos os que se encontravam em Jerusalém e em Benjamim concordaram com esta aliança; e os moradores de Jerusalém fizeram segundo a aliança de Deus, o Deus dos seus pais. 33 Josias tirou todas as abominações de todas as terras que eram dos filhos de Israel e obrigou todos os que estavam em Israel a servir o Senhor, seu Deus. Enquanto Josias viveu, não deixaram de seguir o Senhor, Deus de seus pais.

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2 He did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, and walked in the ways of David his father, and didn’t turn away to the right hand or to the left. 3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, the Asherah poles, the engraved images, and the molten images. 4 They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and he cut down the incense altars that were on high above them. He broke the Asherah poles, the engraved images, and the molten images in pieces, made dust of them, and scattered it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 He burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem. 6 He did this in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, even to Naphtali, around in their ruins. 7 He broke down the altars, beat the Asherah poles and the engraved images into powder, and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel, then returned to Jerusalem.

8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of Yahweh his God. 9 They came to Hilkiah the high priest and delivered the money that was brought into God’s house, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered from the hands of Manasseh, Ephraim, of all the remnant of Israel, of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 They delivered it into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and the workmen who labored in Yahweh’s house gave it to mend and repair the house. 11 They gave it to the carpenters and to the builders to buy cut stone and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed. 12 The men did the work faithfully. Their overseers were Jahath and Obadiah the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to give direction; and others of the Levites, who were all skillful with musical instruments. 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and directed all who did the work in every kind of service. Of the Levites, there were scribes, officials, and gatekeepers.

14 When they brought out the money that was brought into Yahweh’s house, Hilkiah the priest found the book of Yahweh’s law given by Moses. 15 Hilkiah answered Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house." So Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

16 Shaphan carried the book to the king, and moreover brought back word to the king, saying, "All that was committed to your servants, they are doing. 17 They have emptied out the money that was found in Yahweh’s house, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers and into the hand of the workmen." 18 Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, "Hilkiah the priest has delivered me a book." Shaphan read from it to the king.

19 When the king had heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes. 20 The king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 21 "Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is Yahweh’s wrath that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept Yahweh’s word, to do according to all that is written in this book."

22 So Hilkiah and those whom the king had commanded went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter), and they spoke to her to that effect.

23 She said to them, "Yahweh, the God of Israel says: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 "Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place and on its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah. 25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands, therefore my wrath is poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.’"’ 26 But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, you shall tell him this, ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel says: "About the words which you have heard, 27 because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me, and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you," says Yahweh. 28 "Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes won’t see all the evil that I will bring on this place and on its inhabitants."’"

They brought back this message to the king.

29 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 The king went up to Yahweh’s house with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem—the priests, the Levites, and all the people, both great and small—and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in Yahweh’s house. 31 The king stood in his place and made a covenant before Yahweh, to walk after Yahweh, and to keep his commandments, his testimonies, and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. 32 He caused all who were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand. The inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33 Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that belonged to the children of Israel, and made all who were found in Israel to serve, even to serve Yahweh their God. All his days they didn’t depart from following Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
