1 Quem é como o sábio? E quem sabe a interpretação das coisas? A sabedoria faz reluzir o rosto de uma pessoa e muda a dureza do seu semblante.

2 Eu digo a você: observe o mandamento do rei, e isso por causa do juramento que você fez diante de Deus. 3 Não tenha pressa em sair da presença dele, nem insista em fazer o que é mau, porque ele faz o que bem entende. 4 Porque a palavra do rei tem autoridade suprema. Quem pode lhe perguntar: "O que você está fazendo?" 5 Quem guarda o mandamento não experimenta nenhum mal; e o coração do sábio conhece o tempo e o modo certo de agir. 6 Porque há um tempo e um modo para todo propósito; porque é grande o mal que pesa sobre o ser humano.

7 Ninguém sabe o que vai acontecer. Pois quem poderá lhe dizer o que vai acontecer? 8 Não há ninguém que tenha domínio sobre o espírito para o reter; nem tampouco quem tenha poder sobre o dia da morte. Não há como escapar desse combate, e a maldade não poderá livrar os que a praticam. 9 Tudo isso vi quando comecei a pensar no que se faz debaixo do sol. Há um tempo em que uma pessoa tem domínio sobre outra pessoa, para seu próprio mal.

10 Assim também vi os ímpios serem sepultados com honra, ao passo que os que frequentavam o lugar santo foram esquecidos na cidade onde fizeram o bem. Também isto é vaidade. 11 Como não se executa logo a sentença contra uma obra má, o coração humano está inteiramente disposto a praticar o mal. 12 Ainda que o pecador faça o mal cem vezes, e a vida dele se prolongue, eu sei com certeza que tudo correrá bem para os que temem a Deus. 13 Mas nada correrá bem para o ímpio, e ele não prolongará os seus dias; será como a sombra, visto que não teme a Deus.

14 Ainda há outra vaidade sobre a terra: justos que são tratados segundo as obras dos ímpios, e ímpios que são tratados segundo as obras dos justos. Digo que também isto é vaidade.

15 Por isso exalto a alegria, porque para o ser humano não há nada melhor debaixo do sol do que comer, beber e alegrar-se; pois isso o acompanhará no seu trabalho nos dias da vida que Deus lhe dá debaixo do sol.

16 Quando me dediquei a conhecer a sabedoria e a ver o trabalho que há sobre a terra — pois nem de dia nem de noite se consegue conciliar o sono —, 17 contemplei toda a obra de Deus e vi que o ser humano não pode compreender a obra que se faz debaixo do sol; por mais que se esforce para a descobrir, não a entenderá; e, ainda que o sábio diga que conseguirá conhecê-la, nem por isso a poderá achar.

1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

2 I say, "Keep the king’s command!" because of the oath to God. 3 Don’t be hasty to go out of his presence. Don’t persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him, 4 for the king’s word is supreme. Who can say to him, "What are you doing?" 5 Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure. 6 For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him. 7 For he doesn’t know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be? 8 There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

9 All this I have seen, and applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt. 10 So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from holiness. They went and were forgotten in the city where they did this. This also is vanity. 11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. 12 Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him. 13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow, because he doesn’t fear God.

14 There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. 15 Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun than to eat, to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (even though eyes see no sleep day or night), 17 then I saw all the work of God, that man can’t find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won’t find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won’t be able to find it.
