1 O Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Vá falar com Faraó, porque lhe endureci o coração e o coração de seus oficiais, para que eu faça estes meus sinais no meio deles, 2 e para que você possa contar aos seus filhos e aos filhos de seus filhos como zombei dos egípcios e quantos sinais fiz no meio deles, e para que vocês saibam que eu sou o Senhor.

3 Moisés e Arão apresentaram-se a Faraó e lhe disseram:

— Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus dos hebreus: "Até quando você se recusará a humilhar-se diante de mim? Deixe o meu povo ir, para que me adore. 4 Se você não deixar o meu povo ir, eis que amanhã trarei gafanhotos ao seu território. 5 Eles cobrirão de tal maneira a face da terra que não será possível ver o chão. Comerão o restante que escapou, o que restou depois da chuva de pedras, e comerão todas as árvores que crescem no campo. 6 Os gafanhotos encherão as suas casas, as casas de todos os seus oficiais e as casas de todos os egípcios, como nunca viram os seus pais, nem os seus antepassados desde o dia em que se estabeleceram na terra até o dia de hoje."

Moisés virou-se e saiu da presença de Faraó. 7 Então os oficiais de Faraó disseram:

— Até quando este homem será um perigo para nós? Deixe essa gente ir, para que adorem o Senhor, o Deus deles. Será que o rei ainda não sabe que o Egito está arruinado?

8 Então Moisés e Arão foram conduzidos à presença de Faraó, e este lhes disse:

— Vão e adorem o Senhor, o seu Deus. Mas eu gostaria de saber quem são os que irão.

9 Moisés respondeu:

— Iremos com os nossos jovens, com os nossos velhos, com os filhos, com as filhas, com os nossos rebanhos e com os nossos gados. Iremos, porque temos de celebrar uma festa ao Senhor.

10 Então Faraó disse:

— Que o Senhor esteja de fato com vocês, se eu permitir que vocês saiam e levem junto as crianças. Vejam, vocês têm más intenções. 11 Mas não é assim que vai ser. Vão somente vocês, os homens, e adorem o Senhor, pois é isso o que vocês estão pedindo.

E os expulsaram da presença de Faraó.

12 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Estenda a mão sobre a terra do Egito, para que venham gafanhotos sobre a terra do Egito e comam toda a vegetação da terra, tudo o que a chuva de pedras não destruiu.

13 Moisés estendeu o seu bordão sobre a terra do Egito, e o Senhor trouxe sobre a terra um vento leste todo aquele dia e toda aquela noite. Quando amanheceu, o vento leste tinha trazido os gafanhotos. 14 E os gafanhotos se espalharam por toda a terra do Egito e pousaram sobre todo o seu território. Eram muito numerosos. Antes destes, nunca houve tantos gafanhotos, nem depois deles virão outros assim. 15 Porque cobriram a superfície de toda a terra, de modo que a terra se escureceu. Devoraram toda a vegetação da terra e todo fruto das árvores que a chuva de pedras não havia destruído. E não restou nada verde nas árvores, nem na vegetação do campo, em toda a terra do Egito.

16 Então Faraó se apressou em chamar Moisés e Arão e lhes disse:

— Pequei contra o Senhor, seu Deus, e contra vocês. 17 Agora peço que me perdoem o pecado ainda esta vez e que orem ao Senhor, seu Deus, para que tire de mim esta praga mortal.

18 Moisés saiu da presença de Faraó e orou ao Senhor. 19 Então o Senhor fez soprar um vento oeste muito forte, que levantou os gafanhotos e os lançou no mar Vermelho. Não restou um só gafanhoto em todo o território do Egito. 20 O Senhor, porém, endureceu o coração de Faraó, e este não deixou ir os filhos de Israel.

21 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Estenda a mão para o céu, e virão trevas sobre a terra do Egito, trevas que se possam apalpar.

22 Moisés estendeu a mão para o céu, e houve trevas espessas sobre toda a terra do Egito durante três dias. 23 Os egípcios não podiam ver uns aos outros, e ninguém se levantou do seu lugar durante três dias. Porém todos os filhos de Israel tinham claridade nas suas casas.

24 Então Faraó chamou Moisés e lhe disse:

— Vão e adorem o Senhor. Fiquem somente os seus rebanhos e o seu gado; as crianças podem ir com vocês.

25 Moisés respondeu:

— Então você teria de nos providenciar os animais para os sacrifícios e holocaustos que queremos oferecer ao Senhor, nosso Deus. 26 Por isso os nossos rebanhos irão conosco. Nem um casco de animal ficará para trás, porque temos de escolher alguns para oferecer em sacrifício ao Senhor, nosso Deus. E, enquanto não chegarmos lá, não saberemos com que animais teremos de adorar o Senhor.

27 O Senhor, porém, endureceu o coração de Faraó, e este não quis deixá-los ir. 28 Faraó disse a Moisés:

— Saia da minha presença e tenha cuidado para nunca mais aparecer aqui. Porque, no dia em que você tornar a ver o meu rosto, será morto.

29 Moisés respondeu:

— Como queira! Nunca mais tornarei a ver o seu rosto.

1 Yahweh said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these my signs among them; 2 and that you may tell in the hearing of your son, and of your son’s son, what things I have done to Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that you may know that I am Yahweh."

3 Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, "This is what Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me. 4 Or else, if you refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country, 5 and they shall cover the surface of the earth, so that one won’t be able to see the earth. They shall eat the residue of that which has escaped, which remains to you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which grows for you out of the field. 6 Your houses shall be filled, and the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were on the earth to this day.’" He turned, and went out from Pharaoh.

7 Pharaoh’s servants said to him, "How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve Yahweh, their God. Don’t you yet know that Egypt is destroyed?"

8 Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh, and he said to them, "Go, serve Yahweh your God; but who are those who will go?"

9 Moses said, "We will go with our young and with our old. We will go with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds; for we must hold a feast to Yahweh."

10 He said to them, "Yahweh be with you if I let you go with your little ones! See, evil is clearly before your faces. 11 Not so! Go now you who are men, and serve Yahweh; for that is what you desire!" Then they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.

12 Yahweh said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail has left." 13 Moses stretched out his rod over the land of Egypt, and Yahweh brought an east wind on the land all that day, and all night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 The locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the borders of Egypt. They were very grievous. Before them there were no such locusts as they, nor will there ever be again. 15 For they covered the surface of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened, and they ate every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. There remained nothing green, either tree or herb of the field, through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste, and he said, "I have sinned against Yahweh your God, and against you. 17 Now therefore please forgive my sin again, and pray to Yahweh your God, that he may also take away from me this death."

18 Moses went out from Pharaoh, and prayed to Yahweh. 19 Yahweh sent an exceedingly strong west wind, which took up the locusts, and drove them into the Red Sea. There remained not one locust in all the borders of Egypt. 20 But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go.

21 Yahweh said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt." 22 Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. 23 They didn’t see one another, and nobody rose from his place for three days; but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

24 Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, "Go, serve Yahweh. Only let your flocks and your herds stay behind. Let your little ones also go with you."

25 Moses said, "You must also give into our hand sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to Yahweh our God. 26 Our livestock also shall go with us. Not a hoof shall be left behind, for of it we must take to serve Yahweh our God; and we don’t know with what we must serve Yahweh, until we come there."

27 But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he wouldn’t let them go. 28 Pharaoh said to him, "Get away from me! Be careful to see my face no more; for in the day you see my face you shall die!"

29 Moses said, "You have spoken well. I will see your face again no more."
