1 Filhos de Benjamim,

fujam do meio de Jerusalém!

Toquem a trombeta em Tecoa

e levantem o facho de luz

em Bete-Haquerém,

porque do lado do Norte

surge um grande mal,

uma grande destruição.

2 Deixarei em ruínas a formosa

e delicada filha de Sião.

3 Contra ela virão pastores

com os seus rebanhos;

levantarão as suas tendas ao redor,

e cada um apascentará

no seu devido lugar.

4 "Preparem a guerra contra ela!

Levantem-se, e vamos atacar

ao meio-dia.

Ai de nós! Porque o dia já declina,

e as sombras da tarde

já vão se estendendo!

5 Levantem-se,

e vamos atacar de noite

e destruir as suas fortalezas."

6 Porque assim diz

o Senhor dos Exércitos:

"Cortem árvores e construam

rampas de ataque

contra Jerusalém.

Esta é a cidade

que há de ser punida;

só há opressão no meio dela.

7 Como o poço conserva frescas

as suas águas,

assim ela conserva a sua maldade.

Violência e destruição

se ouvem nela;

enfermidade e feridas há

diante de mim continuamente.

8 Aceite a disciplina, ó Jerusalém,

para que eu não me afaste de você,

para que eu não a torne

em desolação

e terra não habitada."

9 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos:

"Diligentemente se rebuscará

o remanescente de Israel

como se faz com uma vinha.

A exemplo do vindimador,

ponha a mão por entre os ramos."

10 A quem falarei e testemunharei,

para que ouçam?

Eis que os seus ouvidos

estão incircuncisos

e não podem ouvir.

Eis que a palavra do Senhor

é para eles objeto de deboche;

não gostam dela.

11 Por isso, estou repleto

da ira do Senhor;

estou cansado de guardá-la

dentro de mim.

"Derrame-a sobre as crianças

pelas ruas

e sobre os jovens nas suas reuniões.

Porque até o marido

e a mulher serão presos,

e também os velhos

e os que têm idade avançada.

12 As suas casas

serão entregues a outros,

os campos e também as mulheres,

porque estenderei a mão

contra os habitantes

desta terra",

diz o Senhor.

13 "Porque desde o menor deles

até o maior,

cada um se dá à ganância,

e tanto o profeta como o sacerdote

usam de falsidade.

14 Curam superficialmente

a ferida do meu povo,

dizendo: ‘Paz, paz’;

quando não há paz.

15 Será que ficaram envergonhados,

porque cometeram abominação?

Não, eles não ficaram

com vergonha.

Eles nem sabem

o que é envergonhar-se.

Portanto, cairão com os que caem;

quando eu os castigar, tropeçarão",

diz o Senhor.

16 Assim diz o Senhor:

"Ponham-se à beira dos caminhos

e olhem;

perguntem pelas veredas antigas,

qual é o bom caminho;

andem por ele e vocês acharão

descanso para a sua alma.

Mas eles dizem:

‘Não andaremos nele.’

17 Também pus atalaias

sobre vocês, dizendo:

‘Fiquem atentos

ao som da trombeta.’

Mas eles dizem: ‘Não escutaremos.’

18 Portanto, escutem, ó nações,

e saiba, ó congregação,

o que vai acontecer com eles!

19 Ouça, ó terra!

Eis que eu trarei

mal sobre este povo,

o próprio fruto

dos seus pensamentos,

porque não estão atentos

às minhas palavras

e rejeitam a minha lei.

20 Para que, pois, me vem

o incenso de Sabá

e a melhor cana aromática

de terras distantes?

Os holocaustos que vocês oferecem

não são aceitáveis,

e os seus sacrifícios

não me agradam."

21 Portanto, assim diz o Senhor:

"Eis que porei tropeços

diante deste povo;

neles cairão pais

e filhos juntamente;

o vizinho e o seu companheiro

perecerão."

22 Assim diz o Senhor:

"Eis que um povo vem

da terra do Norte,

e uma grande nação se levanta

dos confins da terra.

23 Armam-se de arco e de lança;

são cruéis e não conhecem

a compaixão.

O barulho que fazem

é como o bramido do mar.

Vêm montados em cavalos,

como guerreiros

em ordem de batalha

contra você, ó filha de Sião.

24 Ao ouvirmos a fama deles,

as nossas mãos desfaleceram;

angústia tomou conta de nós,

dores como as da mulher

que está dando à luz.

25 Não saiam ao campo,

nem andem pelo caminho,

porque o inimigo tem espada,

e há terror por todos os lados.

26 Ó filha do meu povo,

vista roupa feita de pano de saco

e role no pó;

pranteie como por um filho único,

pranto de amarguras;

porque de repente

virá o destruidor sobre nós."

27 "Jeremias, fiz de você

um purificador de metais

entre o meu povo,

uma fortaleza,

para que você examine

e venha a conhecer

o caminho deles.

28 Todos são mais do que rebeldes

e andam espalhando calúnias;

são bronze e ferro,

são todos corruptores.

29 O fole sopra com força,

e o chumbo já se derreteu

com o calor.

Em vão continua a depuração,

porque os maus não são separados.

30 Serão chamados

de ‘prata rejeitada’,

porque o Senhor os rejeitou."

1 "Flee for safety, you children of Benjamin, out of the middle of Jerusalem! Blow the trumpet in Tekoa and raise up a signal on Beth Haccherem, for evil looks out from the north with a great destruction. 2 I will cut off the beautiful and delicate one, the daughter of Zion. 3 Shepherds with their flocks will come to her. They will pitch their tents against her all around. They will feed everyone in his place."

4 "Prepare war against her! Arise! Let’s go up at noon. Woe to us! For the day declines, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out. 5 Arise! Let’s go up by night, and let’s destroy her palaces." 6 For Yahweh of Armies said, "Cut down trees, and cast up a mound against Jerusalem. This is the city to be visited. She is filled with oppression within herself. 7 As a well produces its waters, so she produces her wickedness. Violence and destruction is heard in her. Sickness and wounds are continually before me. 8 Be instructed, Jerusalem, lest my soul be alienated from you, lest I make you a desolation, an uninhabited land."

9 Yahweh of Armies says, "They will thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel like a vine. Turn again your hand as a grape gatherer into the baskets."

10 To whom should I speak and testify, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they can’t listen. Behold, Yahweh’s word has become a reproach to them. They have no delight in it. 11 Therefore I am full of Yahweh’s wrath. I am weary with holding it in.

"Pour it out on the children in the street,

and on the assembly of young men together;

for even the husband with the wife will be taken,

the aged with him who is full of days.

12 Their houses will be turned to others,

their fields and their wives together;

for I will stretch out my hand on the inhabitants of the land, says Yahweh."

13 "For from their least even to their greatest, everyone is given to covetousness.

From the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.

14 They have healed also the hurt of my people superficially,

saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace.

15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?

No, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush.

Therefore they will fall among those who fall.

When I visit them, they will be cast down," says Yahweh.

16 Yahweh says, "Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, ‘Where is the good way?’ and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ 17 I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not listen!’ 18 Therefore hear, you nations, and know, congregation, what is among them. 19 Hear, earth! Behold, I will bring evil on this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it. 20 To what purpose does frankincense from Sheba come to me, and the sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices are not pleasing to me."

21 Therefore Yahweh says, "Behold, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people. The fathers and the sons together will stumble against them. The neighbor and his friend will perish." 22 Yahweh says, "Behold, a people comes from the north country. A great nation will be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. 23 They take hold of bow and spear. They are cruel, and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Zion."

24 We have heard its report. Our hands become feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us, and pains as of a woman in labor. 25 Don’t go out into the field or walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and terror are on every side. 26 Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

27 "I have made you a tester of metals and a fortress among my people, that you may know and try their way. 28 They are all grievous rebels, going around to slander. They are bronze and iron. All of them deal corruptly. 29 The bellows blow fiercely. The lead is consumed in the fire. In vain they go on refining, for the wicked are not plucked away. 30 Men will call them rejected silver, because Yahweh has rejected them."
