1 Mas os filhos de Israel foram infiéis em relação às coisas condenadas, porque Acã, filho de Carmi, filho de Zabdi, filho de Zera, da tribo de Judá, pegou para si uma parte das coisas condenadas. A ira do Senhor se acendeu contra os filhos de Israel.

2 Josué enviou alguns homens de Jericó até a cidade de Ai, que está junto a Bete-Áven, a leste de Betel, e lhes falou, dizendo:

— Vão e espiem a terra.

Os homens foram e espiaram a cidade. 3 E voltaram a Josué e lhe disseram:

— Não é necessário que vá todo o povo; bastam uns dois ou três mil homens, para atacar a cidade de Ai. Não fatigue ali todo o povo, porque são poucos os inimigos.

4 Assim, apenas uns três mil homens do povo foram até lá, os quais fugiram diante dos homens da cidade de Ai. 5 Os homens dali mataram uns trinta e seis deles, e perseguiram os outros desde o portão da cidade até as pedreiras, e os derrotaram na descida. E o coração do povo se derreteu e se tornou como água.

6 Então Josué rasgou a sua roupa e se prostrou com o rosto em terra diante da arca do Senhor até a tarde, ele e os anciãos de Israel; e puseram pó sobre a cabeça. 7 E Josué disse:

— Ah! Senhor Deus, por que fizeste este povo passar o Jordão, para nos entregares nas mãos dos amorreus, para sermos destruídos? Antes tivéssemos nos contentado em ficar do outro lado do Jordão! 8 Ah! Senhor, que direi? Pois Israel virou as costas diante dos seus inimigos! 9 Quando os cananeus e todos os moradores da terra ouvirem isto, nos cercarão e apagarão o nosso nome da face da terra; e, então, que farás ao teu grande nome?

10 Então o Senhor disse a Josué:

— Levante-se! Por que você está assim prostrado sobre o seu rosto? 11 Israel pecou. Quebraram a minha aliança, aquilo que eu lhes havia ordenado, pois tomaram das coisas condenadas, furtaram, mentiram e até debaixo da sua bagagem o puseram. 12 Por isso os filhos de Israel não puderam resistir aos seus inimigos; viraram as costas diante deles, porque Israel está condenado à destruição. Não continuarei com vocês, se não eliminarem do meio de vocês a coisa roubada.

13 — Levante-se, santifique o povo e diga: "Santifiquem-se para amanhã, porque assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: ‘Há coisas condenadas no meio de vocês, ó Israel. Vocês não poderão resistir aos seus inimigos enquanto não eliminarem do meio de vocês as coisas condenadas. 14 Pela manhã, pois, vocês se apresentarão, segundo as suas tribos; e a tribo que o Senhor designar por sorteio se apresentará, segundo as famílias; e a família que o Senhor designar se apresentará por casas; e a casa que o Senhor designar se apresentará homem por homem. 15 Aquele que for achado com a coisa condenada será queimado, ele e tudo o que tiver, porque quebrou a aliança do Senhor e cometeu um ato infame em Israel.’"

16 Então Josué se levantou de madrugada e fez com que Israel se apresentasse, segundo as suas tribos; e a sorte caiu sobre a tribo de Judá. 17 Ele fez com que se apresentasse a tribo de Judá, e a família indicada foi a dos zeraítas. Fez com que se apresentasse a família dos zeraítas, homem por homem, e a família indicada foi a de Zabdi. 18 E, fazendo com que se apresentasse a família de Zabdi, homem por homem, o indicado foi Acã, filho de Carmi, filho de Zabdi, filho de Zera, da tribo de Judá.

19 Então Josué disse a Acã:

— Meu filho, dê glória ao Senhor, Deus de Israel, e renda louvores a ele. E conte-me, agora, o que foi que você fez; não me esconda nada.

20 Acã respondeu a Josué:

— É verdade, eu pequei contra o Senhor, Deus de Israel, e fiz assim e assim. 21 Quando vi entre o despojo uma boa capa babilônica, uns dois quilos e meio de prata e uma barra de ouro pesando mais de meio quilo, cobicei essas coisas e as peguei para mim; e eis que estão escondidas na terra, no meio da minha tenda, e a prata, por baixo.

22 Então Josué enviou mensageiros que foram correndo à tenda de Acã; e eis que tudo estava escondido nela, e a prata estava por baixo. 23 Tiraram aquelas coisas do meio da tenda, e as trouxeram a Josué e a todos os filhos de Israel, e as colocaram diante do Senhor. 24 Então Josué e todo o Israel com ele pegaram Acã, filho de Zera, e a prata, a capa, a barra de ouro, os filhos e as filhas dele, os seus bois, os seus jumentos, as suas ovelhas, a sua tenda e tudo o que ele tinha e os levaram para o vale de Acor. 25 Josué disse a Acã:

— Por que você trouxe esta calamidade sobre nós? O Senhor hoje trará calamidade sobre você.

E todo o Israel o apedrejou. E, depois de apedrejá-los, ainda os queimou. 26 E levantaram sobre ele um montão de pedras, que permanece até o dia de hoje.

Assim, o Senhor apagou o furor da sua ira. Por isso aquele lugar se chama o vale de Acor até o dia de hoje.

1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against the children of Israel. 2 Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, "Go up and spy out the land."

The men went up and spied out Ai. 3 They returned to Joshua, and said to him, "Don’t let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Don’t make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them." 4 So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai. 5 The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them. They chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water. 6 Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before Yahweh’s ark until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. 7 Joshua said, "Alas, Lord Yahweh, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan! 8 Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after Israel has turned their backs before their enemies? 9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?"

10 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Get up! Why have you fallen on your face like that? 11 Israel has sinned. Yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. Yes, they have even taken some of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff. 12 Therefore the children of Israel can’t stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. 13 Get up! Sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, for Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, "There is a devoted thing among you, Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted thing from among you." 14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. It shall be that the tribe which Yahweh selects shall come near by families. The family which Yahweh selects shall come near by households. The household which Yahweh selects shall come near man by man. 15 It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed Yahweh’s covenant, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’"

16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel near by their tribes. The tribe of Judah was selected. 17 He brought near the family of Judah, and he selected the family of the Zerahites. He brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was selected. 18 He brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected. 19 Joshua said to Achan, "My son, please give glory to Yahweh, the God of Israel, and make confession to him. Tell me now what you have done! Don’t hide it from me!"

20 Achan answered Joshua, and said, "I have truly sinned against Yahweh, the God of Israel, and this is what I have done. 21 When I saw among the plunder a beautiful Babylonian robe, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver under it."

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent. Behold, it was hidden in his tent, with the silver under it. 23 They took them from the middle of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel. They laid them down before Yahweh. 24 Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor. 25 Joshua said, "Why have you troubled us? Yahweh will trouble you today." All Israel stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. 26 They raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Yahweh turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called "The valley of Achor" to this day.
