1 No princípio era o Verbo, e o Verbo estava com Deus, e o Verbo era Deus. 2 Ele estava no princípio com Deus. 3 Todas as coisas foram feitas por ele, e, sem ele, nada do que foi feito se fez. 4 A vida estava nele e a vida era a luz dos homens. 5 A luz resplandece nas trevas, e as trevas não prevaleceram contra ela.

6 Houve um homem enviado por Deus, e o nome dele era João. 7 Este veio como testemunha para testificar a respeito da luz, para que todos viessem a crer por meio dele. 8 Ele não era a luz, mas veio para dar testemunho da luz, 9 a verdadeira luz, que, vinda ao mundo, ilumina toda a humanidade.

10 O Verbo estava no mundo, o mundo foi feito por meio dele, mas o mundo não o conheceu. 11 Veio para o que era seu, e os seus não o receberam. 12 Mas, a todos quantos o receberam, deu-lhes o poder de serem feitos filhos de Deus, a saber, aos que creem no seu nome, 13 os quais não nasceram do sangue, nem da vontade da carne, nem da vontade do homem, mas de Deus. 14 E o Verbo se fez carne e habitou entre nós, cheio de graça e de verdade, e vimos a sua glória, glória como do unigênito do Pai.

15 João dá testemunho a respeito dele e exclama:

— Este é aquele de quem eu dizia: "Ele vem depois de mim, mas é mais importante do que eu, pois já existia antes de mim."

16 Porque todos nós temos recebido da sua plenitude e graça sobre graça. 17 Porque a lei foi dada por meio de Moisés; a graça e a verdade vieram por meio de Jesus Cristo. 18 Ninguém jamais viu Deus; o Deus unigênito, que está junto do Pai, é quem o revelou.

19 Este foi o testemunho de João, quando os judeus lhe enviaram de Jerusalém sacerdotes e levitas para perguntar: "Quem é você?" 20 Ele confessou e não negou; confessou:

— Eu não sou o Cristo.

21 Diante disso, lhe perguntaram:

— Quem é você, então? Você é Elias?

Ele disse:

— Não sou.

Então perguntaram:

— Você é o profeta?

Ele respondeu:

— Não, não sou.

22 Disseram-lhe, então:

— Diga quem é você, para podermos dar uma resposta àqueles que nos enviaram. O que é que você diz a respeito de si mesmo?

23 Então ele respondeu:

— Eu sou "a voz do que clama no deserto: Endireitem o caminho do Senhor", como disse o profeta Isaías.

24 Ora, os que haviam sido enviados eram do grupo dos fariseus. 25 E perguntaram a João:

— Então por que você batiza, se não é o Cristo, nem Elias, nem o profeta?

26 João respondeu:

— Eu batizo com água, mas no meio de vocês está alguém que vocês não conhecem. 27 Ele vem depois de mim, mas não sou digno de desamarrar as correias das suas sandálias.

28 Essas coisas aconteceram em Betânia, do outro lado do Jordão, onde João estava batizando.

29 No dia seguinte, vendo que Jesus vinha em sua direção, João disse:

— Eis o Cordeiro de Deus, que tira o pecado do mundo! 30 Este é aquele a respeito de quem eu falava, quando disse: "Depois de mim vem um homem que é mais importante do que eu, porque já existia antes de mim." 31 Eu mesmo não o conhecia, mas vim batizando com água a fim de que ele fosse manifestado a Israel.

32 E João testemunhou, dizendo:

— Vi o Espírito descer do céu como pomba e pousar sobre ele. 33 Eu não o conhecia; aquele, porém, que me enviou a batizar com água me disse: "Aquele sobre quem você vir descer e pousar o Espírito, esse é o que batiza com o Espírito Santo." 34 Pois eu mesmo vi e dou testemunho de que ele é o Filho de Deus.

35 No dia seguinte, João estava outra vez na companhia de dois dos seus discípulos 36 e, vendo Jesus passar, disse:

— Eis o Cordeiro de Deus!

37 Os dois discípulos, ouvindo-o dizer isso, seguiram Jesus. 38 E Jesus, voltando-se e vendo que o seguiam, disse-lhes:

— O que vocês estão procurando?

Eles disseram:

— Rabi, onde o senhor mora? ("Rabi" quer dizer "Mestre".)

39 Jesus respondeu:

— Venham ver!

Então eles foram, viram onde Jesus estava morando e ficaram com ele aquele dia. Eram mais ou menos quatro horas da tarde.

40 André, o irmão de Simão Pedro, era um dos dois que tinham ouvido o testemunho de João e seguido Jesus. 41 Ele encontrou primeiro o seu próprio irmão, Simão, a quem disse:

— Achamos o Messias! ("Messias" quer dizer "Cristo".)

42 E o levou a Jesus. Jesus olhou para ele e disse:

— Você é Simão, filho de João, mas agora será chamado Cefas. ("Cefas" quer dizer "Pedro".)

43 No dia seguinte, Jesus resolveu ir para a Galileia e encontrou Filipe, a quem disse:

— Siga-me.

44 Esse Filipe era de Betsaida, cidade de André e de Pedro. 45 Filipe encontrou Natanael e lhe disse:

— Achamos aquele de quem Moisés escreveu na Lei, e a quem se referiram os profetas: Jesus, o Nazareno, filho de José.

46 Então Natanael perguntou:

— De Nazaré pode sair alguma coisa boa?

Filipe respondeu:

— Venha ver!

47 Jesus viu Natanael se aproximar e disse a respeito dele:

— Eis um verdadeiro israelita, em quem não existe fingimento algum!

48 Natanael perguntou a Jesus:

— De onde o senhor me conhece?

Jesus respondeu:

— Antes de Filipe chamá-lo, eu já tinha visto você debaixo da figueira.

49 Então Natanael exclamou:

— Mestre, o senhor é o Filho de Deus! O senhor é o Rei de Israel!

50 Ao que Jesus lhe respondeu:

— Você crê porque eu disse que tinha visto você debaixo da figueira? Pois você verá coisas maiores do que estas.

51 E acrescentou:

— Em verdade, em verdade lhes digo que vocês verão o céu aberto e os anjos de Deus subindo e descendo sobre o Filho do Homem.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.

6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light. 9 The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. 12 But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John testified about him. He cried out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’" 16 From his fullness we all received grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.

19 This is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"

20 He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, "I am not the Christ."

21 They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?"

He said, "I am not."

"Are you the prophet?"

He answered, "No."

22 They said therefore to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"

23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said."

24 The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"

26 John answered them, "I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen." 28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’ 31 I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel." 32 John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him. 33 I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God."

35 Again, the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you looking for?"

They said to him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), "where are you staying?"

39 He said to them, "Come and see."

They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is, being interpreted, Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is by interpretation, Peter).

43 On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

46 Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?"

Philip said to him, "Come and see."

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!"

48 Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"

Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."

49 Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!"

50 Jesus answered him, "Because I told you, ‘I saw you underneath the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these!" 51 He said to him, "Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
