1 Nos dias em que os juízes julgavam, houve fome na terra de Israel. E um homem de Belém de Judá foi morar por algum tempo na terra de Moabe, com a sua mulher e os seus dois filhos. 2 Este homem se chamava Elimeleque, e sua mulher se chamava Noemi. Os filhos se chamavam Malom e Quiliom. Eram efrateus, de Belém de Judá. Foram à terra de Moabe e ficaram ali. 3 Algum tempo depois, Elimeleque, o marido de Noemi, morreu, e ela ficou sozinha com os dois filhos. 4 Estes casaram com mulheres moabitas. O nome de uma delas era Orfa, e o nome da outra era Rute. E ficaram ali quase dez anos. 5 Depois morreram também Malom e Quiliom, os dois filhos de Noemi. E assim ela ficou sozinha, sem os dois filhos e sem o marido.

6 Então Noemi voltou da terra de Moabe com as suas noras, porque ainda em Moabe ouviu que o Senhor havia se lembrado do seu povo, dando-lhe alimento. 7 Assim, ela saiu do lugar onde havia morado, e as duas noras estavam com ela. Enquanto caminhavam, voltando para a terra de Judá, 8 Noemi disse às suas noras:

— Vão agora e voltem cada uma para a casa de sua mãe. E que o Senhor seja bondoso com vocês, assim como vocês foram bondosas com os que morreram e comigo. 9 O Senhor faça com que vocês sejam felizes, cada uma na casa de seu novo marido.

E deu um beijo em cada uma delas. Elas, porém, começaram a chorar alto 10 e lhe disseram:

— Não! Nós iremos com a senhora para junto do seu povo.

11 Mas Noemi disse:

— Voltem, minhas filhas! Por que vocês iriam comigo? Vocês acham que eu ainda tenho filhos em meu ventre, para que casem com vocês? 12 Voltem, minhas filhas! Vão embora, porque sou velha demais para ter marido. E ainda que eu dissesse: "Tenho esperança", ou ainda que casasse esta noite e tivesse filhos, 13 será que vocês iriam esperar até que eles viessem a crescer? Ficariam tanto tempo sem casar? Não, minhas filhas! A minha amargura é maior do que a de vocês, porque o Senhor descarregou a sua mão contra mim.

14 Então, de novo, choraram em alta voz. Orfa, com um beijo, se despediu de sua sogra, porém Rute se apegou a ela.

15 Então Noemi disse:

— Veja! A sua cunhada voltou para o seu povo e para os seus deuses. Vá você também com ela.

16 Porém Rute respondeu:

— Não insista para que eu a deixe nem me obrigue a não segui-la! Porque aonde quer que você for, irei eu; e onde quer que pousar, ali pousarei eu. O seu povo é o meu povo, e o seu Deus é o meu Deus. 17 Onde quer que você morrer, morrerei eu e aí serei sepultada. Que o Senhor me castigue, se outra coisa que não seja a morte me separar de você.

18 Quando Noemi viu que Rute estava mesmo decidida a acompanhá-la, deixou de insistir com ela.

19 Então ambas se foram, até que chegaram a Belém. E aconteceu que, ao chegarem ali, toda a cidade se comoveu por causa delas. E as mulheres perguntavam:

— Essa não é a Noemi?

20 Porém ela lhes dizia:

— Não me chamem de Noemi, mas de Mara, porque o Todo-Poderoso me deu muita amargura. 21 Quando saí daqui, eu era plena, mas o Senhor me fez voltar vazia. Por que, então, querem me chamar de Noemi, se o Senhor deu testemunho contra mim e o Todo-Poderoso me afligiu?

22 Foi assim que Noemi voltou da terra de Moabe, com Rute, sua nora, a moabita. E chegaram a Belém no começo da colheita da cevada.

1 In the days when the judges judged, there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab with his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there. 3 Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. 4 They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years. 5 Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband. 6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread. 7 She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. 9 May Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband."

Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept. 10 They said to her, "No, but we will return with you to your people."

11 Naomi said, "Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12 Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons, 13 would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for Yahweh’s hand has gone out against me."

14 They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her. 15 She said, "Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law."

16 Ruth said, "Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me."

18 When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.

19 So they both went until they came to Bethlehem. When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, "Is this Naomi?"

20 She said to them, "Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?" 22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
