2 Kings 13

Jehoahaz King of Israel

1 In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord by following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them. 3 So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and for a long time he kept them under the power of Hazael king of Aram and Ben-Hadad his son.

4 Then Jehoahaz sought the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5 The Lord provided a deliverer for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. 6 But they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole*13:6 That is, a wooden symbol of the goddess Asherah; here and elsewhere in 2 Kings remained standing in Samaria.

7 Nothing had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust at threshing time.

8 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoahaz, all he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 9 Jehoahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoash*13:9 Hebrew Joash, a variant of Jehoash; also in verses 12-14 and 25 his son succeeded him as king.

Jehoash King of Israel

10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years. 11 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he continued in them.

12 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, all he did and his achievements, including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 13 Jehoash rested with his ancestors, and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

14 Now Elisha had been suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of Israel went down to see him and wept over him. "My father! My father!" he cried. "The chariots and horsemen of Israel!"

15 Elisha said, "Get a bow and some arrows," and he did so. 16 "Take the bow in your hands," he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands.

17 "Open the east window," he said, and he opened it. "Shoot!" Elisha said, and he shot. "The Lord’s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram!" Elisha declared. "You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek."

18 Then he said, "Take the arrows," and the king took them. Elisha told him, "Strike the ground." He struck it three times and stopped. 19 The man of God was angry with him and said, "You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times."

20 Elisha died and was buried.

Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country every spring. 21 Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet.

22 Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. 23 But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.

24 Hazael king of Aram died, and Ben-Hadad his son succeeded him as king. 25 Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recaptured from Ben-Hadad son of Hazael the towns he had taken in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Three times Jehoash defeated him, and so he recovered the Israelite towns.

O reinado de Jeoacaz, rei de Israel

1 No vigésimo terceiro ano do reinado de Joás, filho de Acazias, rei de Judá, Jeoacaz, filho de Jeú, tornou-se rei de Israel em Samaria e reinou dezessete anos. 2 Ele fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, seguindo os pecados que Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, tinha levado Israel a cometer, e não se afastou deles. 3 Por isso, a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra Israel e, por longo tempo, ele os entregou nas mãos de Hazael, rei de Arã, e do seu filho Ben-Hadade.

4 Então, Jeoacaz buscou o favor do Senhor, e este o atendeu, pois viu a forma cruel com que o rei de Arã oprimia Israel. 5 O Senhor providenciou um libertador para Israel, que escapou do poder de Arã. Assim, os israelitas voltaram a habitar em suas casas como antes. 6 No entanto, não se afastaram dos pecados que a dinastia de Jeroboão havia levado Israel a cometer; antes, permaneceram neles. Até mesmo o poste de Aserá*13.6 Isto é, poste de madeira simbólico usado no culto da deusa Aserá. permanecia de pé em Samaria.

7 De todo o exército de Jeoacaz, só restaram cinquenta cavaleiros, dez carros de guerra e dez mil soldados de infantaria, pois o rei de Arã havia destruído a maior parte dele, reduzindo-o a pó.

8 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Jeoacaz, todas as suas conquistas e tudo o que realizou, constam nos registros históricos dos reis de Israel. 9 Jeoacaz descansou com os seus antepassados e foi sepultado em Samaria, e Jeoás, o seu filho, sucedeu-o como rei.

O reinado de Jeoás, rei de Israel

10 No trigésimo sétimo ano do reinado de Joás, rei de Judá, Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, tornou-se rei de Israel em Samaria e reinou dezesseis anos. 11 Ele fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor e não se desviou de nenhum dos pecados que Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, tinha levado Israel a cometer; antes, permaneceu neles.

12 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Jeoás, tudo o que realizou e todas as suas conquistas, incluindo a guerra contra Amazias, rei de Judá, constam nos registros históricos dos reis de Israel. 13 Jeoás descansou com os seus antepassados, e Jeroboão sucedeu-o no trono. Jeoás foi sepultado com os reis de Israel em Samaria.

A morte de Eliseu

14 Ora, Eliseu estava sofrendo da doença da qual morreria. Então, Jeoás, rei de Israel, desceu até o lugar onde Eliseu estava e, curvado sobre ele, chorou, dizendo:

— Meu pai!*13.14 Pai pode ter o sentido de ancestral, líder ou fundador. Meu pai! Carruagens e cavaleiros de Israel!

15 Eliseu lhe disse:

— Traga um arco e algumas flechas.

Assim fez o rei.

16 — Pegue o arco nas mãos — disse ao rei de Israel.

Quando pegou, Eliseu pôs as mãos sobre as mãos do rei 17 e lhe disse:

— Abra a janela que dá para o leste e atire.

Assim fez o rei, e Eliseu declarou:

— Esta é a flecha da vitória do Senhor, a flecha da vitória sobre Arã! Você destruirá totalmente os arameus, em Afeque.

18 Em seguida, Eliseu lhe disse:

— Pegue as flechas e golpeie o chão com elas.

O rei as pegou, golpeou o chão três vezes e parou. 19 O homem de Deus ficou irado com ele e disse:

— Você deveria ter golpeado o chão cinco ou seis vezes; assim, destruiria totalmente Arã. Agora, porém, você a vencerá somente três vezes.

20 Depois disso, Eliseu morreu e foi sepultado.

Ora, tropas moabitas costumavam entrar no país toda primavera. 21 Certa vez, enquanto alguns israelitas sepultavam um homem, viram de repente uma dessas tropas; então, jogaram o corpo do homem no túmulo de Eliseu e fugiram. Assim que o cadáver encostou nos ossos de Eliseu, o homem voltou à vida e se levantou.

Hazael oprime os israelitas

22 Hazael, rei de Arã, oprimiu os israelitas durante todo o reinado de Jeoacaz. 23 O Senhor, porém, foi bondoso para com eles, teve compaixão e se preocupou com os israelitas, por causa da sua aliança com Abraão, Isaque e Jacó. Até hoje, ele não se dispôs a destruí-los ou a eliminá-los da sua presença.

24 Hazael, rei de Arã, morreu, e Ben-Hadade, o seu filho, sucedeu-o como rei. 25 Então, Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, conquistou de Ben-Hadade, filho de Hazael, as cidades que em combate Hazael havia tomado de Jeoacaz, o seu pai. Três vezes Jeoás o derrotou em combate e, assim, reconquistou as cidades israelitas.
