1 David mustered the men who were with him and appointed over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2 David sent out his troops, a third under the command of Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. The king told the troops, "I myself will surely march out with you."
3 But the men said, "You must not go out; if we are forced to flee, they won’t care about us. Even if half of us die, they won’t care; but you are worth ten thousand of us.18:3 Two Hebrew manuscripts, some Septuagint manuscripts and Vulgate; most Hebrew manuscripts care; for now there are ten thousand like us It would be better now for you to give us support from the city."
4 The king answered, "I will do whatever seems best to you."
So the king stood beside the gate while all his men marched out in units of hundreds and of thousands. 5 The king commanded Joab, Abishai and Ittai, "Be gentle with the young man Absalom for my sake." And all the troops heard the king giving orders concerning Absalom to each of the commanders.
6 David’s army marched out of the city to fight Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. 7 There Israel’s troops were routed by David’s men, and the casualties that day were great—twenty thousand men. 8 The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest swallowed up more men that day than the sword.
9 Now Absalom happened to meet David’s men. He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom’s hair got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.
10 When one of the men saw what had happened, he told Joab, "I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree."
11 Joab said to the man who had told him this, "What! You saw him? Why didn’t you strike him to the ground right there? Then I would have had to give you ten shekels18:11 That is, about 4 ounces or about 115 grams of silver and a warrior’s belt."
12 But the man replied, "Even if a thousand shekels18:12 That is, about 25 pounds or about 12 kilograms were weighed out into my hands, I would not lay a hand on the king’s son. In our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.18:12 A few Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; most Hebrew manuscripts may be translated Absalom, whoever you may be.’ 13 And if I had put my life in jeopardy18:13 Or Otherwise, if I had acted treacherously toward him—and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have kept your distance from me."
14 Joab said, "I’m not going to wait like this for you." So he took three javelins in his hand and plunged them into Absalom’s heart while Absalom was still alive in the oak tree. 15 And ten of Joab’s armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him and killed him.
16 Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and the troops stopped pursuing Israel, for Joab halted them. 17 They took Absalom, threw him into a big pit in the forest and piled up a large heap of rocks over him. Meanwhile, all the Israelites fled to their homes.
18 During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it in the King’s Valley as a monument to himself, for he thought, "I have no son to carry on the memory of my name." He named the pillar after himself, and it is called Absalom’s Monument to this day.
David Mourns
19 Now Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, "Let me run and take the news to the king that the Lord has vindicated him by delivering him from the hand of his enemies."
20 "You are not the one to take the news today," Joab told him. "You may take the news another time, but you must not do so today, because the king’s son is dead."
21 Then Joab said to a Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed down before Joab and ran off.
22 Ahimaaz son of Zadok again said to Joab, "Come what may, please let me run behind the Cushite."
But Joab replied, "My son, why do you want to go? You don’t have any news that will bring you a reward."
23 He said, "Come what may, I want to run."
So Joab said, "Run!" Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain18:23 That is, the plain of the Jordan and outran the Cushite.
24 While David was sitting between the inner and outer gates, the watchman went up to the roof of the gateway by the wall. As he looked out, he saw a man running alone. 25 The watchman called out to the king and reported it.
The king said, "If he is alone, he must have good news." And the runner came closer and closer.
26 Then the watchman saw another runner, and he called down to the gatekeeper, "Look, another man running alone!"
The king said, "He must be bringing good news, too."
27 The watchman said, "It seems to me that the first one runs like Ahimaaz son of Zadok."
"He’s a good man," the king said. "He comes with good news."
28 Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, "All is well!" He bowed down before the king with his face to the ground and said, "Praise be to the Lord your God! He has delivered up those who lifted their hands against my lord the king."
29 The king asked, "Is the young man Absalom safe?"
Ahimaaz answered, "I saw great confusion just as Joab was about to send the king’s servant and me, your servant, but I don’t know what it was."
30 The king said, "Stand aside and wait here." So he stepped aside and stood there.
31 Then the Cushite arrived and said, "My lord the king, hear the good news! The Lord has vindicated you today by delivering you from the hand of all who rose up against you."
32 The king asked the Cushite, "Is the young man Absalom safe?"
The Cushite replied, "May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up to harm you be like that young man."
33 The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!"18:33 In Hebrew texts this verse (18:33) is numbered 19:1.
A morte de Absalão
1 Davi passou em revista o exército e nomeou comandantes de batalhões de mil e de cem. 2 Depois, dividiu o exército em três companhias: uma sob o comando de Joabe, outra sob o comando de Abisai, irmão de Joabe, filho de Zeruia, e outra sob o comando de Itai, o giteu. Então, o rei disse ao exército:
— Eu também marcharei com vocês.
3 Os homens, porém, disseram:
— Não faças isso! Se tivermos que fugir, eles não se preocuparão conosco e, mesmo que metade de nós morra em batalha, eles não se importarão. Tu, porém, vales por dez mil de nós.18.3 Conforme dois manuscritos do Texto Massorético, alguns da Septuaginta e a Vulgata. A maioria dos manuscritos do Texto Massorético traz importarão, pois agora existem dez mil como nós. Melhor será que fiques na cidade e dali nos dês apoio.
4 O rei respondeu:
— Farei o que acharem melhor.
O rei ficou à porta, enquanto os soldados marchavam, saindo em unidades de cem e de mil. 5 O rei ordenou a Joabe, a Abisai e a Itai:
— Por amor a mim, tratem bem o jovem Absalão!
Todo o exército ouviu quando o rei deu essa ordem sobre Absalão a cada um dos comandantes.
6 O exército saiu a campo para enfrentar Israel, e a batalha aconteceu na floresta de Efraim, 7 onde o exército de Israel foi derrotado pelos soldados de Davi. Houve grande matança naquele dia, elevando-se o número de mortos a vinte mil. 8 A batalha espalhou-se por toda a região e, naquele dia, a floresta matou mais que a espada.
9 Durante a batalha, Absalão, montado em sua mula, encontrou-se com os soldados de Davi. Passando a mula debaixo dos galhos de um grande carvalho, Absalão ficou preso nos galhos pelos cabelos. Ficou pendurado entre o céu e a terra, e a mula prosseguiu.
10 Um homem o viu e informou Joabe:
— Acabei de ver Absalão pendurado em um grande carvalho.
11 — Você o viu? — Joabe perguntou ao homem. — E por que não o matou ali mesmo? Eu teria dado a você dez peças de prata e um cinturão de guerreiro!
12 O homem, porém, respondeu:
— Mesmo que fossem pesadas e colocadas nas minhas mãos mil peças de prata,18.12 Isto é, cerca de 12 quilogramas. eu não levantaria a mão contra o filho do rei. Ouvimos o rei ordenar a ti, a Abisai e a Itai: "Protejam, por amor a mim, o jovem Absalão".18.12 Conforme alguns manuscritos do Texto Massorético, a Septuaginta, a Vulgata e a Versão Siríaca. A maioria dos manuscritos do Texto Massorético traz "Protejam o jovem Absalão, não importa quem vocês sejam".13 Por outro lado, se eu tivesse atentado traiçoeiramente contra a vida dele, o rei ficaria sabendo, pois não se pode esconder nada dele, e tu mesmo ficarias contra mim.
14 Joabe disse:
— Não vou perder mais tempo com você.
Então, pegou três pedaços de pau e com eles traspassou o coração de Absalão, quando ele ainda estava vivo no carvalho. 15 Dez dos escudeiros de Joabe cercaram Absalão e acabaram de matá-lo.
16 A seguir, Joabe tocou a trombeta para que o exército parasse de perseguir Israel e, assim, deteve o exército. 17 Retiraram o corpo de Absalão, jogaram-no em um grande fosso na floresta e fizeram um grande monte de pedras sobre ele. Enquanto isso, todos os israelitas fugiram para casa.
18 Em vida, Absalão tinha levantado um monumento para si mesmo no vale do Rei, dizendo: "Não tenho nenhum filho para preservar a minha memória". Por isso, deu à coluna o seu próprio nome, que ainda hoje se chama Monumento de Absalão.
O luto de Davi
19 Então, Aimaás, filho de Zadoque, disse:
— Deixa-me correr e levar ao rei a notícia de que o Senhor lhe fez justiça, livrando-o dos seus inimigos.
20 — Não é você quem deve levar a notícia hoje — disse-lhe Joabe. — Deixe isso para outra ocasião. Hoje não, porque o filho do rei morreu.
21 Então, Joabe ordenou a um cuxita:
— Vá dizer ao rei o que você viu.
O cuxita inclinou-se diante de Joabe e saiu correndo para levar a notícia.
22 No entanto, Aimaás, filho de Zadoque, disse de novo a Joabe:
— Não importa o que aconteça, deixa-me ir com o cuxita.
Joabe, porém, respondeu:
— Por que está querendo tanto ir, meu filho? Você não receberá nenhuma recompensa pela notícia.
23 Ele insistiu:
— Não importa o que aconteça, quero ir.
Então, Joabe disse:
— Pois vá!
Aimaás correu pelo caminho da planície18.23 Isto é, a planície do Jordão. e passou à frente do cuxita.
24 Davi estava sentado entre a porta interna e a externa da cidade. Quando a sentinela subiu ao terraço que havia sobre a porta junto ao muro, viu um homem que vinha correndo sozinho. 25 A sentinela gritou, avisando o rei. Este disse:
— Se ele está sozinho, deve trazer boa notícia.
O homem chegava cada vez mais perto.
26 Então, a sentinela viu outro homem que vinha correndo e gritou ao porteiro:
— Vem outro homem correndo sozinho!
— Esse também deve estar trazendo boa notícia! — exclamou o rei.
27 A sentinela disse:
— Pelo jeito de correr, parece que o da frente é Aimaás, filho de Zadoque.
O rei disse:
— É um bom homem. Ele traz boas notícias.
28 Então, Aimaás aproximou-se do rei e o saudou. Prostrou-se com o rosto em terra diante do rei e disse:
— Bendito seja o Senhor, o teu Deus! Ele entregou os homens que se rebelaram contra o rei, meu senhor.
29 O rei perguntou:
— O jovem Absalão está bem?
Aimaás respondeu:
— Vi que houve grande confusão quando Joabe ia enviar o servo do rei e a mim, teu servo, mas não sei o que aconteceu.
30 O rei disse:
— Fique ali ao lado esperando.
Aimaás ficou esperando.
31 Então, o cuxita chegou e disse:
— Ó rei, meu senhor, ouve a boa notícia! Hoje o Senhor te livrou de todos os que se levantaram contra ti.
32 O rei perguntou ao cuxita:
— O jovem Absalão está bem?
O cuxita respondeu:
— Que os inimigos do rei, meu senhor, e todos os que se levantam para te fazer mal acabem como aquele jovem!
33 Então, o rei, abalado, subiu ao quarto que ficava sobre a porta da cidade e chorou. Foi subindo e clamando:
— Ah, meu filho Absalão! Meu filho, meu filho Absalão! Quem me dera ter morrido no seu lugar! Ah, Absalão, meu filho, meu filho!18.33 No texto hebraico, esse versículo (18.33) corresponde a 19.1, e 19.1-43 corresponde a 19.2-44.
