1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 "Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease*5:2 The Hebrew word for defiling skin disease, traditionally translated "leprosy," was used for various diseases affecting the skin. or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them." 4 The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses.

5 The Lord said to Moses, 6 "Say to the Israelites: ‘Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way*5:6 Or woman who commits any wrong common to mankind and so is unfaithful to the Lord is guilty 7 and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. 8 But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer. 9 All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. 10 Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.’ "

11 Then the Lord said to Moses, 12 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13 so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14 and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure—or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure— 15 then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah*5:15 That is, probably about 3 1/2 pounds or about 1.6 kilograms of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing.

16 " ‘The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband"— 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—"may the Lord cause you to become a curse*5:21 That is, may he cause your name to be used in cursing (see Jer. 29:22); or, may others see that you are cursed; similarly in verse 27. among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries."

" ‘Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So be it."

23 " ‘The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24 He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. 25 The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord and bring it to the altar. 26 The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial*5:26 Or representative offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. 27 If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. 28 If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.

29 " ‘This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and makes herself impure while married to her husband, 30 or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the Lord and is to apply this entire law to her. 31 The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.’ "

1 O Senhor disse a Moisés:

2 — Ordene aos israelitas que mandem para fora do acampamento todo aquele que tiver grave doença de pele, ou que tiver um fluxo, ou que se tornar impuro por tocar em um cadáver. 3 Mande-os para fora do acampamento, tanto homens como mulheres, para que não contaminem o seu próprio acampamento, onde habito entre eles.

4 Os israelitas assim fizeram e os mandaram para fora do acampamento, como o Senhor tinha ordenado a Moisés.

5 O Senhor disse a Moisés:

6 — Diga aos israelitas: "Quando um homem ou uma mulher pecar contra outra pessoa*5.6 Ou cometer qualquer pecado que os homens cometem. e, portanto, ofender o Senhor, será culpado. 7 Confessará o pecado que cometeu, fará restituição total pelo dano causado, acrescentará um quinto a esse valor e entregará tudo isso a quem ele prejudicou. 8 Se, porém, o prejudicado não tiver nenhum parente próximo para receber a restituição, esta pertencerá ao Senhor e será entregue ao sacerdote, bem como o carneiro com o qual se faz expiação pelo culpado. 9 Todas as contribuições consagradas que os israelitas trouxerem ao sacerdote pertencerão a ele. 10 O que uma pessoa consagrar pertence a ela, mas o que ela der ao sacerdote pertencerá ao sacerdote".

11 O Senhor disse a Moisés:

12 — Diga o seguinte aos israelitas: "Se a mulher for infiel ao seu marido, 13 deitando-se com outro homem, e isso estiver oculto ao marido, já que a impureza dela não foi descoberta por não haver testemunha contra ela nem ter ela sido pega no ato, 14 e se o marido dela tiver ciúmes e suspeitar da sua mulher, quer esteja ela pura, quer impura, 15 ele a levará ao sacerdote, com uma oferta de um décimo de efa*5.15 Isto é, cerca de 1,6 quilograma. de farinha de cevada por ela. Não derramará azeite nem porá incenso sobre a farinha, porque é uma oferta de cereal pelo ciúme, uma oferta memorial para revelar o pecado.

16 "O sacerdote trará a mulher e a apresentará diante do Senhor. 17 Então, apanhará um pouco de água sagrada em um jarro de barro e colocará na água um pouco do pó do chão do tabernáculo. 18 Depois de apresentar a mulher diante do Senhor, o sacerdote soltará o cabelo dela e lhe porá nas mãos a oferta memorial, a oferta pelo ciúme, enquanto ele mesmo terá na mão a água amarga que traz maldição. 19 Então, o sacerdote fará a mulher jurar e lhe dirá: ‘Se nenhum outro homem se deitou com você e se você não se desviou nem se tornou impura quando casada, que esta água amarga que traz maldição não faça mal a você. 20 Se você, porém, se desviou mesmo estando casada e se contaminou por ter se deitado com um homem que não é o seu marido’ — 21 então, o sacerdote fará a mulher pronunciar este juramento com maldição —, ‘que o Senhor faça de você objeto de maldição e de desprezo no meio do seu povo, fazendo que o seu ventre se torne estéril e a sua barriga inche.*5.21 Hebraico: que a sua coxa caia e o seu ventre inche; também nos versículos 22 e 27.22 Que esta água que traz maldição entre no seu corpo, inche a sua barriga e torne o seu ventre estéril’. Então, a mulher dirá: ‘Amém. Que assim seja’.

23 "O sacerdote escreverá essas maldições em um livro e depois as lavará na água amarga. 24 Ele fará a mulher beber a água amarga que traz maldição, e essa água entrará nela, causando-lhe amargo sofrimento. 25 O sacerdote apanhará das mãos dela a oferta de cereal pelo ciúme, ele a moverá ritualmente diante do Senhor e a trará ao altar. 26 Então, apanhará um punhado da oferta de cereal como memorial e a queimará sobre o altar; depois disso, fará a mulher beber a água. 27 Se ela houver se contaminado, sendo infiel ao seu marido, quando o sacerdote fizer que ela beba a água que traz maldição, essa água entrará nela e causará um amargo sofrimento; sua barriga inchará, e ela, com o ventre estéril, se tornará uma maldição no meio do seu povo. 28 Se, porém, a mulher não houver se contaminado, mas estiver pura, estará livre de punição e engravidará.

29 "Esta é, pois, a lei quanto ao ciúme, quando uma mulher se desviar e tornar-se impura estando casada 30 ou quando o ciúme se apoderar de um homem porque suspeita da sua mulher. O sacerdote a apresentará diante do Senhor e lhe aplicará toda essa lei. 31 O marido estará livre de qualquer culpa, mas a mulher sofrerá as consequências do seu pecado".
