1 Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards, to the fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley — to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!2 See, the Lord has one who is powerful and strong. Like a hailstorm and a destructive wind, like a driving rain and a flooding downpour, he will throw it forcefully to the ground.3 That wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards, will be trampled underfoot.4 That fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley, will be like figs ripe before harvest — as soon as people see them and take them in hand, they swallow them.5 In that day the LORD Almighty will be a glorious crown, a beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people.6 He will be a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.7 And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions.8 All the tables are covered with vomit and there is not a spot without filth.9 "Who is it he is trying to teach? To whom is he explaining his message? To children weaned from their milk, to those just taken from the breast?10 For it is: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that "; a little here, a little there."11 Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people,12 to whom he said, "This is the resting place, let the weary rest"; and, "This is the place of repose" — but they would not listen.13 So then, the word of the LORD to them will become: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that; a little here, a little there — so that as they go they will fall backward; they will be injured and snared and captured.14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.15 You boast, "We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood "our hiding place."16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.17 I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line; hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place.18 Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it.19 As often as it comes it will carry you away; morning after morning, by day and by night, it will sweep through." The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.20 The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.21 The LORD will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon — to do his work, his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task.22 Now stop your mocking, or your chains will become heavier; the Lord, the LORD Almighty, has told me of the destruction decreed against the whole land.23 Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say.24 When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually? Does he keep on breaking up and working the soil?25 When he has leveled the surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin? Does he not plant wheat in its place, "barley in its plot, "and spelt in its field?26 His God instructs him and teaches him the right way.27 Caraway is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin; caraway is beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a stick.28 Grain must be ground to make bread; so one does not go on threshing it forever. The wheels of a threshing cart may be rolled over it, but one does not use horses to grind grain.29 All this also comes from the LORD Almighty, whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent.

1 Khốn thay cho mão triều thiên kiêu ngạo của những bợm rượu Ep-ra-im, khốn thay cho hoa chóng tàn làm đồ trang sức đẹp nhứt dân ấy, đóng tại nơi trũng màu mỡ của những người say rượu?2 Nầy, từ nơi Chúa có một người mạnh và có quyền, giống như cơn bão mưa đá, như trận gió phá hại, như nước lớn vỡ bờ. Người sẽ lấy tay ném cả xuống đất.3 Mão triều thiên kiêu ngạo của những bợm rượu Ep-ra-im sẽ bị giày đạp dưới chơn.4 Cái hoa chóng tàn làm đồ trang sức đẹp nhứt dân ấy, đóng tại nơi trũng màu mỡ, cũng sẽ giống như trái vả chín trước mùa hè: người ta thấy nó, vừa mới vào tay thì đã nuốt.5 Trong ngày đó, Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân sẽ trở nên mão triều thiên chói sáng và mão miện rực rỡ của dân sót Ngài;6 sẽ trở nên thần công chính cho kẻ ngồi trên tòa xét đoán, và sức mạnh cho những kẻ đuổi giặc nơi cửa thành.7 Song những kẻ ấy cũng choáng váng vì rượu, xiêu tó vì các thứ rượu mạnh. Thầy tế lễ và đấng tiên tri đều choáng váng vì rượu mạnh, bị rượu nuốt đi, nhơn các thứ rượu mạnh mà xoàng ba; xem sự hiện thấy thì cắt nghĩa sai, xử kiện thì vấp ngã;8 mửa ra ô uế đầy bàn tiệc, chẳng có chỗ nào sạch!9 Vậy người sẽ dạy khôn cho ai, và khiến ai hiểu sẽ dạy dỗ mình? Có phải là dạy cho những trẻ con thôi bú, mới lìa khỏi vú chăng?10 Vì, với họ phải giềng mối thêm giềng mối, giềng mối thêm giềng mối; hàng thêm hàng, hàng thêm hàng; một chút chỗ nầy, một chút chỗ kia!11 Vậy nên Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ dùng môi lạ lưỡi khác mà phán cùng dân nầy.12 Ngài đã phán cùng nó rằng: Đây là nơi yên nghỉ; hãy để kẻ mệt nhọc được yên nghỉ. Nầy là lúc mát mẻ cho các ngươi. Thế mà họ chẳng chịu nghe.13 Lời Đức Giê-hô-va đối với họ sẽ là giềng mối thêm giềng mối, giềng mối thêm giềng mối; hàng thêm hàng, hàng thêm hàng; một chút chỗ nầy, một chút chỗ kia; hầu cho họ bước tới, thì ngã nhào và giập nát, sập bẫy, và bị bắt!14 Vậy nên, hỡi các ngươi là những người ngạo mạn, cai trị dân nầy ở Giê-ru-sa-lem, hãy nghe lời của Đức Giê-hô-va.15 Vì các ngươi nói rằng: Chúng ta đã kết ước với sự chết, và giao ước cùng nơi âm phủ. Khi tai nạn hủy diệt trải qua, sẽ chẳng chạm đến ta đâu. Chúng ta lấy sự nói dối là nơi nương náu, sự gian lận làm nơi ẩn mình.16 Vậy nên, Chúa Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Nầy, ta đặt tại Si-ôn một hòn đá để làm nền, là đá đã thử nghiệm, là đá góc quí báu, là nền bền vững: ai tin sẽ chẳng gấp rúc.17 Ta sẽ lấy sự chánh trực làm dây đo, sự công bình làm chuẩn mực; mưa đó sẽ hủy diệt nơi ẩn náu bằng sự nói dối, nước sẽ ngập chỗ nương náu.18 Bấy giờ ước các người kết với sự chết sẽ phế đi, ước các ngươi giao cùng nơi âm phủ sẽ không đứng được. Khi tai nạn hủy diệt trải qua, các ngươi đều bị giày đạp.19 Mỗi lần tai nạn trải qua, sẽ bắt lấy các ngươi, vì nó trải qua mọi buổi sớm mai, ngày và đêm; chỉ có sự kính sợ làm cho các ngươi hiểu biết lời dạy ấy.20 Giường ngắn quá không thể duỗi mình; nền hẹp quá không thể quấn mình.21 Vì Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ dấy lên như ở núi Phê-ra-xim; Ngài nổi giận như tại trũng Ga-ba-ôn, đặng làm việc Ngài, là việc khác thường, và làm công Ngài, là công lạ lùng.22 Vậy bây giờ, đừng khinh lờn nữa, e dây tói càng buộc chặt các ngươi chẳng; vì ta có nghe từ nơi Chúa, là Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, lịnh truyền hủy diệt cả đất.23 Hãy lắng tai, nghe tiếng ta; hãy để ý, nghe lời ta!24 Kẻ cày để gieo, há hằng ngày cứ cày luôn sao? Há chẳng vỡ đất và bừa hay sao?25 Khi đã bông bằng mặt đất rồi, há chẳng vải tiểu hồi, gieo đại hồi ư? Há chẳng tỉa lúa mì nơi rãnh, mạch nha nơi đã cắm dấu, và đại mạch trên bờ ư?26 Ay là Đức Chúa Trời dạy và bảo nó cách phải làm.27 Vì người ta chẳng dùng trái lăn mà nghiền tiểu hồi, cũng chẳng cho bánh-xe lăn trên đại hồi; nhưng tiểu hồi thì đập bằng cái que, đại hồi thì đập bằng cái lẻ.28 Người ta vẫn xay lúa mì; những chẳng đập luôn dầu cho hột thóc qua dưới bánh xe hoặc chơn ngựa, song không giập nát.29 Điều đó cũng ra bởi Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, mưu Ngài lạ lùng, sự khôn ngoan Ngài tốt lành.
