4. NLT New Living Translation

1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, "Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?"

6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.

15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and her offspring.

He will strike*3:15 Or bruise; also in 3:15b. your head,

and you will strike his heel."

20 Then the man—Adam—named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all who live.*3:20 Eve sounds like a Hebrew term that means "to give life."

7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any of the beasts of the earth which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman: Why hath God commanded you, that you should not eat of every tree of paradise? 6 And the woman saw that the tree was good to eat, and fair to the eyes, and delightful to behold: and she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave to her husband who did eat. 15 I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. 20 And Adam called the name of his wife Eve: because she was the mother of all the living.

8. MSG The Message

1 The serpent was clever, more clever than any wild animal God had made. He spoke to the Woman: "Do I understand that God told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?"

6 When the Woman saw that the tree looked like good eating and realized what she would get out of it—she’d know everything!—she took and ate the fruit and then gave some to her husband, and he ate.

   14,15 God told the serpent:

"Because you’ve done this, you’re cursed,

cursed beyond all cattle and wild animals,

Cursed to slink on your belly

and eat dirt all your life.

I’m declaring war between you and the Woman,

   between your offspring and hers.

   He’ll wound your head,

   you’ll wound his heel."

20 The Man, known as Adam, named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.
