1 Davi soube que os filisteus estavam atacando a cidade de Queila e roubando o trigo que havia sido colhido há pouco. 2 Então perguntou a Deus, o Senhor:

— Devo ir e atacar os filisteus?

— Sim! — respondeu o Senhor. — Ataque-os e salve a cidade de Queila.

3 Mas os homens de Davi disseram:

— Nós já estamos com medo de ficar aqui em Judá. Quanto mais de ir a Queila para atacar o exército dos filisteus!

4 Então Davi consultou novamente a Deus, o Senhor, e ele respondeu:

— Vá a Queila e ataque porque eu lhe darei a vitória sobre os filisteus.

5 Então Davi e os seus homens foram a Queila e atacaram os filisteus. Mataram muitos deles e tomaram os seus rebanhos. E assim Davi salvou os moradores de Queila.

6 Na ocasião em que Abiatar, filho de Aimeleque, escapou e foi se juntar a Davi em Queila, ele levou o manto sacerdotal.

7 Quando Saul foi avisado de que Davi tinha ido para Queila, disse:

— Deus entregou Davi nas minhas mãos. Ele foi para uma cidade cercada de muralhas, com portões reforçados, e assim caiu numa armadilha.

8 Então Saul chamou todos os soldados para a batalha a fim de marchar contra Queila e cercar Davi e os seus homens.

9 Quando Davi soube que Saul estava planejando atacá-lo, disse ao sacerdote Abiatar:

— Traga aqui o manto sacerdotal para que possamos consultar a Deus.

10 Então Davi disse:

— Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, eu, o teu servo Davi, soube que Saul está planejando vir a Queila para destruí-la por minha causa. 11 Será que os moradores de Queila vão me entregar nas mãos de Saul? Será que Saul virá mesmo, como ouvi dizer? Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, peço-te que me respondas!

— Saul virá! — respondeu o Senhor.

12 — E será que os moradores de Queila vão entregar a mim e também os meus homens a Saul? — perguntou Davi.

— Sim, vão! — respondeu o Senhor.

13 Então Davi e os seus homens — mais ou menos seiscentos — saíram imediatamente de Queila e seguiram sem rumo certo. Quando Saul ficou sabendo que Davi tinha fugido de Queila, abandonou o seu plano.

14 Davi se escondeu nas fortalezas da região deserta e montanhosa que fica perto de Zife. Saul continuava a procurá-lo todos os dias, mas Deus não entregou Davi a ele. 15 E Davi estava com medo porque Saul tinha saído para matá-lo.

Davi passou a viver em Horesa, no deserto que fica perto de Zife. 16 Jônatas foi encontrar-se com ele ali e lhe deu coragem para confiar na proteção de Deus. 17 Jônatas disse:

— Não tenha medo. Saul, o meu pai, não conseguirá causar-lhe nenhum mal. Você será o rei de Israel, e eu ocuparei o segundo lugar no seu governo. E o meu pai sabe muito bem disso.

18 E ali, na presença de Deus, o Senhor, os dois renovaram a sua promessa de amizade. Davi ficou em Horesa, e Jônatas voltou para casa.

19 Algumas pessoas de Zife foram a Gibeá e disseram a Saul:

— Davi está escondido na nossa terra, em Horesa, no monte Haquila, ao sul de Jesimom. 20 Nós sabemos que o senhor quer muito prendê-lo. Venha com a gente, que nós lhe entregaremos Davi.

21 Saul respondeu:

— Que o Senhor abençoe vocês por serem tão bondosos comigo! 22 Vão e se informem novamente. Descubram com certeza onde Davi está e quem o viu ali. Dizem que ele é muito esperto. 23 Descubram exatamente os lugares onde ele se esconde e voltem aqui sem falta. Então irei com vocês e, se ele estiver lá, eu o pegarei ainda que tenha de procurar em toda a terra de Judá.

24 Então eles voltaram para Zife, adiante de Saul. Davi e os seus homens estavam no deserto de Maom, num vale seco ao sul de Jesimom. 25 Saul e os seus soldados foram procurar Davi. Mas Davi ficou sabendo e foi para uma passagem nas rochas do deserto de Maom e ficou ali. Quando Saul soube disso, foi atrás de Davi. 26 Saul e os seus soldados estavam de um lado do monte, e Davi e os seus, do outro. Estes fugiram depressa para escapar de Saul e dos seus soldados, que os estavam cercando para prendê-los. 27 Mas justamente nesse momento um mensageiro chegou e disse a Saul:

— Volte imediatamente! Os filisteus estão invadindo o país!

28 Então Saul parou de perseguir Davi e foi lutar contra os filisteus. É por isso que aquele lugar é chamado de "Rocha da Separação".

29 Davi saiu e foi para os lugares protegidos da região da fonte de Gedi.

1 BEHOLD, now it came to pass that the king of the Lamanites sent a proclamation among all his people, that they should not lay their hands on Ammon, or Aaron, or Omner, or Himni, nor either of their brethren who should go forth preaching the word of God, in whatsoever place they should be, in any part of their land.2 Yea, he sent a decree among them, that they should not lay their hands on them to bind them, or to cast them into prison; neither should they spit upon them, nor smite them, nor cast them out of their synagogues, nor scourge them; neither should they cast stones at them, but that they should have free access to their houses, and also their temples, and their sanctuaries.3 And thus they might go forth and preach the word according to their desires, for the king had been converted unto the Lord, and all his household; therefore he sent his proclamation throughout the land unto his people, that the word of God might have no obstruction, but that it might go forth throughout all the land, that his people might be convinced concerning the wicked traditions of their fathers, and that they might be convinced that they were all brethren, and that they ought not to murder, nor to plunder, nor to steal, nor to commit adultery, nor to commit any manner of wickedness.4 And now it came to pass that when the king had sent forth this proclamation, that Aaron and his brethren went forth from city to city, and from one house of worship to another, establishing churches, and consecrating priests and teachers throughout the land among the Lamanites, to preach and to teach the word of God among them; and thus they began to have great success.5 And thousands were brought to the knowledge of the Lord, yea, thousands were brought to believe in the traditions of the Nephites; and they were taught the records and prophecies which were handed down even to the present time.6 And as sure as the Lord liveth, so sure as many as believed, or as many as were brought to the knowledge of the truth, through the preaching of Ammon and his brethren, according to the spirit of revelation and of prophecy, and the power of God working miracles in them-yea, I say unto you, as the Lord liveth, as many of the Lamanites as believed in their preaching, and were converted unto the Lord, never did fall away.7 For they became a righteous people; they did lay down the weapons of their rebellion, that they did not fight against God any more, neither against any of their brethren.8 Now, these are they who were converted unto the Lord:9 The people of the Lamanites who were in the land of Ishmael;10 And also of the people of the Lamanites who were in the land of Middoni;11 And also of the people of the Lamanites who were in the city of Nephi;12 And also of the people of the Lamanites who were in the land of Shilom, and who were in the land of Shemlon, and in the city of Lemuel, and in the city of Shimnilom.13 And these are the names of the cities of the Lamanites which were converted unto the Lord; and these are they that laid down the weapons of their rebellion, yea, all their weapons of war; and they were all Lamanites.14 And the Amalekites were not converted, save only one; neither were any of the Amulonites; but they did harden their hearts, and also the hearts of the Lamanites in that part of the land wheresoever they dwelt, yea, and all their villages and all their cities.15 Therefore, we have named all the cities of the Lamanites in which they did repent and come to the knowledge of the truth, and were converted.16 And now it came to pass that the king and those who were converted were desirous that they might have a name, that thereby they might be distinguished from their brethren; therefore the king consulted with Aaron and many of their priests, concerning the name that they should take upon them, that they might be distinguished.17 And it came to pass that they called their names Anti-Nephi-Lehies; and they were called by this name and were no more called Lamanites.18 And they began to be a very industrious people; yea, and they were friendly with the Nephites; therefore, they did open a correspondence with them, and the curse of God did no more follow them.
