1 Jetro, o sacerdote de Midiã e sogro de Moisés, soube de tudo o que Deus havia feito por Moisés e pelo povo de Israel. E soube também como o Senhor havia tirado do Egito os israelitas. 2 Então ele foi para o lugar onde Moisés estava, levando Zípora, a mulher de Moisés. Moisés havia mandado Zípora e os dois filhos dela para a casa de Jetro. 3 O nome de um deles era Gérson , pois Moisés tinha dito: "Sou hóspede em terra estrangeira." 4 O nome do outro era Eliézer , pois Moisés tinha dito: "O Deus do meu pai me ajudou e não deixou que eu fosse morto pelo rei do Egito."

5 Jetro, o sogro de Moisés, foi com a mulher e os dois filhos de Moisés para o deserto onde Moisés estava acampado, no monte sagrado . 6 Ele havia mandado um recado a Moisés, dizendo que estava chegando, com a mulher e os filhos dele. 7 Então Moisés saiu para se encontrar com Jetro, curvou-se em sinal de respeito e o beijou. Cada um perguntou ao outro se ia bem de saúde, e depois eles entraram na barraca de Moisés. 8 Ele contou ao sogro tudo o que o Senhor Deus, por causa do seu amor pelo povo de Israel, tinha feito com o rei do Egito e com os egípcios. Falou também a respeito das dificuldades que o povo havia tido no caminho e como o Senhor os havia socorrido. 9 Jetro ficou muito contente com tudo o que o Senhor havia feito pelo povo de Israel, tirando-o do Egito. 10 E disse:

— Louvado seja o Senhor Deus, que libertou vocês das mãos dos egípcios e do seu rei! 11 Agora sei que o Senhor é mais poderoso do que todos os deuses, pois livrou os israelitas do poder dos egípcios, quando eles os trataram com tanto desprezo.

12 Em seguida Jetro trouxe uma oferta para ser completamente queimada e animais para serem mortos como sacrifício a Deus. Arão e todos os líderes do povo de Israel foram com ele para comer a refeição sagrada.

13 No dia seguinte Moisés sentou-se para julgar as questões do povo e ficou ocupado desde a manhã até a noite. 14 Quando Jetro viu tudo o que Moisés estava fazendo, perguntou:

— Por que você está agindo assim? Por que está resolvendo sozinho os problemas do povo, com todas essas pessoas em pé ao seu redor, desde a manhã até a noite?

15 Moisés respondeu:

— Eu tenho de fazer isso porque as pessoas vêm falar comigo para saber o que Deus quer. 16 Quando duas pessoas têm uma questão, elas vêm falar comigo para que eu resolva quem está certo. E explico os mandamentos e as leis de Deus a todos.

17 Então Jetro disse:

— O que você está fazendo não está certo. 18 Desse jeito você vai ficar cansado demais, e o povo também. Isso é muito trabalho para você fazer sozinho. 19 Agora escute o meu conselho, e Deus o ajudará. Está certo que você represente o povo diante de Deus e também que leve a ele os problemas deles. 20 Você deve ensinar-lhes as leis de Deus e explicar o que devem fazer e como devem viver. 21 Mas você deve escolher alguns homens capazes e colocá-los como chefes do povo: chefes de mil, de cem, de cinquenta e de dez. Devem ser homens que temam a Deus, que mereçam confiança e que sejam honestos em tudo. 22 Serão eles que sempre julgarão as questões do povo. Os casos mais difíceis serão trazidos a você, mas os mais fáceis eles mesmos poderão resolver. Assim será melhor para você, pois eles o ajudarão nesse trabalho pesado. 23 Se você fizer isso, e se for essa a ordem de Deus, você não ficará cansado, e todas essas pessoas poderão ir para casa com as suas questões resolvidas.

24 Moisés aceitou o conselho de Jetro 25 e escolheu homens capazes entre todos os israelitas. Ele os colocou como chefes de mil, de cem, de cinquenta e de dez. 26 Eles sempre julgaram as questões do povo, resolvendo as mais fáceis e trazendo para Moisés as mais difíceis.

27 Então Moisés se despediu de Jetro, e Jetro voltou para casa.

1 MOREOVER, the word of the Lord said unto me: Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man's pen, concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.2 And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived and bare a son. Then said the Lord to me: Call his name, Maher-shalal-hash-baz.4 For behold, the child shall not have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, before the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.5 The Lord spake also unto me again, saying:6 Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory; and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks.8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.9 Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear all ye of far countries; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to naught; speak the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with us.11 For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:12 Say ye not, A confederacy, to all to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.13 Sanctify the Lord of Hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.15 And many among them shall stumble and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.17 And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of Hosts, which dwelleth in Mount Zion.19 And when they shall say unto you: Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and mutter-should not a people seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead?20 To the law and to the testimony; and if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.21 And they shall pass through it hardly bestead and hungry; and it shall come to pass that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.22 And they shall look unto the earth and behold trouble, and darkness, dimness of anguish, and shall be driven to darkness.
