1 Aqui estão mais alguns provérbios de Salomão, escolhidos e copiados por homens que estavam a serviço do rei Ezequias, de Judá.

2 Respeitamos a Deus por causa daquilo que ele esconde de nós; e respeitamos as autoridades por causa daquilo que elas nos explicam.

3 Você nunca sabe o que um rei está pensando; os pensamentos dele estão fora do nosso alcance, assim como as alturas do céu ou as profundezas da terra.

4 Purifique a prata, e o artista poderá fazer uma obra de arte. 5 Afaste do rei os maus conselheiros porque o que torna forte um governo é a justiça.

6 Quando você estiver diante das autoridades, não se faça de importante. 7 É melhor que depois lhe deem um lugar de honra do que você ser humilhado na presença das autoridades.

8 Não tenha pressa de ir ao tribunal para contar o que você viu. Se mais tarde outra testemunha provar que você está errado, o que é que você vai fazer?

9 Defenda a sua causa contra o seu vizinho, mas não revele nada que alguém lhe tenha contado a respeito do assunto. 10 Do contrário todos ficarão sabendo que você não consegue guardar segredos, e você nunca mais se livrará desta vergonha.

11 A palavra certa na hora certa é como um desenho de ouro feito em cima de prata.

12 Quando alguém está querendo aprender, o conselho de uma pessoa experiente vale mais do que anéis de ouro ou joias de ouro puro.

13 Como água fresca no calor do tempo da colheita, assim o mensageiro de confiança reanima quem o mandou.

14 Quem promete e não dá é como a nuvem e o vento que não trazem chuva.

15 A paciência convence até as autoridades; a perseverança pode vencer qualquer dificuldade.

16 Não coma mel demais, pois você pode vomitar. 17 Não vá a toda hora à casa do vizinho, pois ele pode se cansar e acabar ficando com raiva de você.

18 A pessoa que diz mentiras a respeito dos outros é tão perigosa quanto uma espada, um porrete ou uma flecha afiada.

19 Num momento de dificuldade, depender de uma pessoa que não merece confiança é como mastigar com um dente estragado, andar com um pé aleijado 20 ou querer se esquentar, num dia frio, tirando a roupa.

Cantar para quem está triste é como esfregar sal numa ferida.

21 Se o seu inimigo estiver com fome, dê comida a ele; se estiver com sede, dê água. 22 Porque assim você o fará queimar de remorso e vergonha, e o Senhor Deus recompensará você.

23 Assim como o vento norte traz chuva, os mexericos trazem ódio.

24 É melhor morar no fundo do quintal do que dentro de casa com uma mulher briguenta.

25 Ouvir uma boa notícia que a gente não espera é como tomar um gole de água fresca quando se tem sede.

26 A pessoa boa que se deixa levar por uma pessoa má é como uma fonte de água barrenta ou como um poço contaminado.

27 Assim como mel demais não faz bem, também não é bom andar procurando elogios.

28 Quem não sabe se controlar é tão sem defesa como uma cidade sem muralhas.

1 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out. 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. 3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable. 4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there cometh forth a vessel for the finer: 5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness. 6 Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: 7 For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom thine eyes have seen. 8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. 9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself, and disclose not the secret of another: 10 Lest he that heareth it revile thee, and thine infamy turn not away. 11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in baskets of silver. 12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. 13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his masters. 14 As clouds and wind without rain, so is he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely. 15 By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone. 16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee; lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. 17 Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbour’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee. 18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. 19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. 20 As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart. 21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: 22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. 23 The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance. 24 It is better to dwell in the comer of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a wide house. 25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. 26 As a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, so is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked. 27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search out their own glory is not glory. 28 He whose spirit is without restraint is like a city that is broken down and hath no wall.
