1 Moisés disse ao povo:

— O Senhor, nosso Deus, fará com que vocês entrem na terra que vão possuir e ele mesmo expulsará os povos que vocês enfrentarem. Conforme vocês forem avançando, Deus derrotará sete povos que são mais numerosos e mais poderosos do que vocês. São eles: os heteus, os girgaseus, os amorreus, os cananeus, os perizeus, os heveus e os jebuseus. 2 O Senhor entregará esses povos nas suas mãos, e vocês os atacarão e destruirão completamente. Não façam nenhum acordo de paz com eles, nem tenham pena deles. 3 Não casem com essa gente, nem vocês, nem os seus filhos ou as suas filhas, 4 pois esses povos farão com que os seus filhos rejeitem a Deus e adorem outros deuses. Aí o Senhor Deus ficará irado com vocês e os destruirá de uma vez. 5 Portanto, derrubem os altares desses povos, quebrem as colunas do deus Baal, cortem os postes da deusa Aserá e queimem todas as imagens. 6 Pois vocês são o povo escolhido pelo Senhor, nosso Deus; entre todos os povos da terra ele escolheu vocês para serem somente dele.

7 — O Senhor Deus os amou e escolheu, não porque vocês são mais numerosos do que outros povos; de fato, vocês são menos numerosos do que qualquer outro povo. 8 Mas o Senhor os amou e com a sua força os livrou do poder de Faraó, o rei do Egito, onde vocês eram escravos. Ele fez isso para cumprir o juramento que tinha feito aos nossos antepassados. 9 Lembrem que o Senhor, nosso Deus, é o único Deus. Ele é fiel e mantém a sua aliança. Ele continua a amar, por mil gerações, aqueles que o amam e obedecem aos seus mandamentos, 10 porém castiga de uma vez os que o rejeitam. Ele não demora em castigá-los e destruí-los. 11 Obedeçam, pois, às leis e aos mandamentos que hoje eu estou dando a vocês e façam tudo o que eu mando.

12 — Se vocês derem atenção a essas leis e as cumprirem fielmente, o Senhor, nosso Deus, manterá a sua aliança e continuará a amá-los, conforme prometeu aos nossos antepassados. 13 Ele os amará, e abençoará, e fará com que se tornem mais e mais numerosos. Ele lhes dará muitos filhos, boas colheitas de cereais, uvas e azeitonas e muitas crias de gado e de ovelhas. Deus lhes dará todas essas bênçãos na terra que ele vai lhes dar, conforme o juramento que fez aos nossos antepassados. 14 Vocês serão o povo mais abençoado do mundo. Todos terão filhos, e todos os seus animais terão crias. 15 O Senhor Deus os protegerá de toda enfermidade e nunca os castigará com as terríveis doenças com que castigou os egípcios, como vocês bem sabem. Pelo contrário, ele mandará essas doenças para os povos que odeiam vocês. 16 Acabem com todos os povos que o Senhor, nosso Deus, entregar nas mãos de vocês. Não tenham pena deles, nem adorem os seus deuses, pois isso seria uma armadilha mortal para vocês.

17 — Não fiquem pensando assim: "Estes povos são mais numerosos do que nós; como poderemos derrotá-los?" 18 Não tenham medo deles; lembrem daquilo que o Senhor, nosso Deus, fez com o rei do Egito e com todo o seu povo. 19 Lembrem das pragas, dos milagres e das coisas espantosas que vocês viram e não esqueçam o grande poder com que o Senhor os tirou do Egito. Pois o Senhor, nosso Deus, fará com esses povos, de quem vocês estão com medo, a mesma coisa que fez com os egípcios. 20 Deus fará com que esses povos fujam apavorados e destruirá os que escaparem e se esconderem de vocês.

21 — Portanto, não tenham medo deles, pois com vocês está o Senhor, nosso Deus, o Deus que é forte e causa medo. 22 Pouco a pouco ele irá expulsando os povos que vocês enfrentarem. Mas vocês não irão destruí-los todos de uma vez; se fizessem isso, o número dos animais selvagens aumentaria, e eles seriam um grande perigo. 23 O Senhor vai entregar os inimigos nas mãos de vocês e vai deixá-los tão apavorados, que eles serão destruídos. 24 Deus também entregará nas suas mãos os reis desses povos. Vocês os matarão, e ninguém lembrará nem do nome deles. Vocês derrotarão todos os seus inimigos; ninguém poderá resistir. 25 Queimem todas as imagens dos deuses desses povos. Não cobicem a prata e o ouro que estão nas imagens, nem fiquem com eles, pois isso seria uma armadilha mortal para vocês. Para o Senhor, nosso Deus, adorar ídolos é uma coisa nojenta. 26 Não levem nenhum ídolo para dentro de suas casas, pois a maldição que está sobre o ídolo estará também sobre vocês. Detestem e odeiem com todo o coração os ídolos, pois o ídolo é uma coisa amaldiçoada.

1 When the LORD your God shall bring you into the land to which you go to possess it, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you;2 And when the LORD your God shall deliver them over to you; you shall strike them, and utterly destroy them; you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them:3 Neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give unto his son, nor his daughter shall you take unto your son.4 For they will turn away your son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy you suddenly.5 But thus shall you deal with them; you shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their idol poles, and burn their graven images with fire.6 For you are a holy people unto the LORD your God: the LORD your God has chosen you to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all people:8 But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, has the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.9 Know therefore that the LORD your God, he is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;10 And repays them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hates him, he will repay him to his face.11 You shall therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command you this day, to do them.12 Therefore it shall come to pass, if you hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD your God shall keep with you the covenant and the mercy which he swore unto your fathers:13 And he will love you, and bless you, and multiply you: he will also bless the fruit of your womb, and the fruit of your land, your grain, and your wine, and your oil, the increase of your cattle, and the flocks of your sheep, in the land which he swore unto your fathers to give you.14 You shall be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.15 And the LORD will take away from you all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you know, upon you; but will lay them upon all them that hate you.16 And you shall consume all the people whom the LORD your God shall deliver you; your eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shall you serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto you.17 If you shall say in your heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?18 You shall not be afraid of them: but shall well remember what the LORD your God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;19 The great trials which your eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby the LORD your God brought you out: so shall the LORD your God do unto all the people of whom you are afraid.20 Moreover the LORD your God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from you, be destroyed.21 You shall not be frightened by them: for the LORD your God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.22 And the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you little by little: you may not consume them at once, lest the wild animals of the field become too numerous for you.23 But the LORD your God shall deliver them unto you, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they are destroyed.24 And he shall deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them.25 The graven images of their gods shall you burn with fire: you shall not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto you, lest you be snared by it: for it is an abomination to the LORD your God.26 Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you become an accursed thing like it: but you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is an accursed thing.
