1 São estas as palavras solenes de Agur, filho de Jaque:

"Deus não está comigo,

Deus não está comigo.

Estou desamparado.

2 Sou mais animal do que gente;

não tenho a inteligência

que um ser humano deve ter.

3 Nunca aprendi a ser sábio

e não conheço o Deus Santo.

4 Quem já sabe tudo a respeito do céu?

Quem já pegou o vento com as mãos?

Quem já embrulhou água num pano?

Quem já marcou os limites da terra?

Você sabe quem é ele? E quem é o filho dele?

5 Tudo o que Deus diz é verdade. Ele é como um escudo para todos os que procuram a sua proteção. 6 Nunca declare que Deus disse alguma coisa que, de fato, ele não disse; se você fizer isso, ele o corrigirá e mostrará que você é mentiroso."

7 Eu te peço, ó Deus, que me dês duas coisas antes de eu morrer: 8 não me deixes mentir e não me deixes ficar nem rico nem pobre. Dá-me somente o alimento que preciso para viver. 9 Porque, se eu tiver mais do que o necessário, poderei dizer que não preciso de ti. E, se eu ficar pobre, poderei roubar e assim envergonharei o teu nome, ó meu Deus.

10 Nunca fale mal de um empregado ao patrão dele para que você não seja amaldiçoado, nem sofra por isso.

11 Há pessoas que amaldiçoam o próprio pai e são ingratas com a própria mãe.

12 Há pessoas que pensam que são puras, mas a sua sujeira ainda não foi lavada.

13 Há pessoas que são tão orgulhosas, que olham os outros com desprezo.

14 Há pessoas que ganham a vida explorando sem dó nem piedade os pobres e os necessitados.

15 A sanguessuga tem duas filhas, e as duas se chamam: Me dá! Me dá!

Há quatro coisas que nunca estão satisfeitas:

16 o mundo dos mortos;

a mulher sem filhos;

a terra seca que precisa sempre de chuva;

e o fogo de um incêndio.

17 Quem caçoa do seu pai ou despreza a sua mãe, quando ela fica velha, será comido pelos urubus ou terá os olhos arrancados pelos corvos.

18 Há quatro coisas misteriosas que eu não consigo entender:

19 a águia voando no céu;

a cobra se arrastando nas pedras;

o navio que encontra o seu caminho no mar;

e o amor entre um homem e uma mulher.

20 Uma esposa infiel age assim: comete adultério, toma um banho e depois diz: "Não fiz nada de errado!"

21 Há quatro coisas que a terra não pode tolerar:

22 o escravo que se torna rei;

o tolo que tem para comer tudo o que quer;

23 a mulher de mau gênio que arranja casamento;

e a escrava que toma o lugar da sua senhora.

24 No mundo há quatro animais que são pequenos, mas muito espertos:

25 as formigas, que são fracas, mas ajuntam a sua comida no verão;

26 os coelhos selvagens, que também não são fortes, mas fazem as suas casas nas pedras;

27 os gafanhotos, que não têm rei, mas avançam em bandos;

28 e as lagartixas, que qualquer um pode pegar com a mão, mas podem ser encontradas até nos palácios.

29 Há quatro seres vivos que, quando caminham, causam olhares de admiração:

30 o leão, o mais forte de todos os animais, que não tem medo de nada;

31 o bode;

o galo, que anda de peito erguido;

e um rei diante do seu povo.

32 Se você tem sido bastante tolo para ser orgulhoso e planejar o mal, então pare e pense:

33 bater o leite dá manteiga;

pancada no nariz faz sair sangue;

provocar a raiva dá briga.

1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,2 Surely I am more senseless than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.4 Who has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if you can tell?5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.6 Add not unto his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.7 Two things have I required of you; deny me not them before I die:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food needful for me:9 Lest I be full, and deny you, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.11 There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.15 The leach has two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that says not, It is enough.17 The eye that mocks at his father, and despises to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young vultures shall eat it.18 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maiden.20 This is the way of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness.21 For three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:22 For a servant when he reigns; and a fool when he is filled with food;23 For an unloved woman when she is married; and a maidservant that is heir to her mistress.24 There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;26 The badgers are but a feeble folk, yet they make their houses in the rocks;27 The locusts have no king, yet they go forth all of them by bands;28 The spider takes hold with its hands, and is in kings' palaces.29 There are three things which are stately in stride, yea, four are stately in their walk:30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turns not away from any;31 A greyhound; a male goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.32 If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, lay your hand upon your mouth.33 Surely the churning of milk brings forth butter, and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood: so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.
