1 Hirão, rei de Tiro, sempre havia sido amigo de Davi. Quando soube que Salomão era o rei em lugar do seu pai, enviou embaixadores a ele. 2 Então Salomão mandou a Hirão a seguinte mensagem:

3 "Você sabe que Davi, o meu pai, teve muitas guerras contra as nações ao seu redor. Por isso, ele nunca pôde construir um templo dedicado ao Senhor, seu Deus, enquanto este não fez com que ele derrotasse todos os seus inimigos. 4 Mas agora o Senhor me deu paz em todas as fronteiras. Eu não tenho inimigos, e não há perigo de ataques. 5 Deus prometeu o seguinte a Davi, o meu pai: ‘O seu filho, que eu vou pôr como rei depois de você, construirá um templo para mim.’ Portanto, eu resolvi construir um templo para a adoração do meu Deus, o Senhor. 6 Por isso, mande cortar cedros do Líbano para mim. Os meus operários trabalharão junto com os seus, e eu pagarei aos seus operários o quanto você quiser. Como você sabe, no meio do meu povo não há quem saiba cortar árvores tão bem como a sua gente da cidade de Sidom."

7 Quando recebeu a mensagem de Salomão, o rei Hirão ficou muito contente e disse:

— Louvado seja hoje o Senhor, que deu a Davi um filho cheio de sabedoria para ficar no lugar dele como rei daquela grande nação!

8 Depois mandou dizer a Salomão o seguinte:

— Recebi a sua mensagem e vou atender o seu pedido. Vou providenciar os cedros e os pinheiros. 9 Os meus operários levarão as toras do alto dos montes Líbanos até o mar e farão jangadas com elas. Depois as levarão beirando o litoral até o lugar que você escolher. Ali os meus operários desamarrarão as toras, e os seus operários tomarão conta delas. E eu gostaria que você fornecesse a alimentação para os meus operários.

10 E assim Hirão forneceu a Salomão toda a madeira de cedro e de pinho que ele pediu. 11 E cada ano Salomão forneceu a Hirão duas mil toneladas de trigo e quatrocentos mil litros de azeite de oliva puro para alimentar os homens dele.

12 O Senhor Deus cumpriu a sua promessa e deu sabedoria a Salomão. Havia paz entre Hirão e Salomão, e eles fizeram um acordo entre si.

13 O rei Salomão convocou em todo o Israel um grupo de trinta mil trabalhadores forçados 14 e pôs Adonirão como chefe deles. Salomão dividiu esses trabalhadores em três grupos de dez mil homens. Cada grupo passava um mês no Líbano e dois meses em casa. 15 Salomão também mandou à região montanhosa oitenta mil homens a fim de cortar pedras e setenta mil homens para carregá-las. 16 Ele colocou três mil e trezentos chefes para dirigir o trabalho deles. 17 Obedecendo às ordens do rei Salomão, eles cortaram grandes pedras de boa qualidade para os alicerces do Templo. 18 Os trabalhadores de Salomão e de Hirão e alguns homens da cidade de Biblos prepararam as pedras e a madeira para a construção do Templo.

1 Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the place of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.2 Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,3 "You know how that David my father could not build a house for the name of the Lord his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.4 But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side. There is neither adversary, nor evil occurrence.5 Behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spoke to David my father, saying, 'Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for my name.'6 Now therefore command that they cut me cedar trees out of Lebanon. My servants shall be with your servants; and I will give you wages for your servants according to all that you shall say. For you know that there is not among us any who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians."7 It happened, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, "Blessed is the Lord this day, who has given to David a wise son over this great people."8 Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, "I have heard the message which you have sent to me. I will do all your desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea. I will make them into rafts to go by sea to the place that you shall appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and you shall receive them. You shall accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household."10 So Hiram gave Solomon timber of cedar and timber of fir according to all his desire.11 Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil. Solomon gave this to Hiram year by year.12 The Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a treaty together.13 King Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.14 He sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses; a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home; and Adoniram was over the men subject to forced labor.15 Solomon had seventy thousand who bore burdens, and eighty thousand who were stone cutters in the mountains;16 besides Solomon's chief officers who were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, who bore rule over the people who labored in the work.17 The king commanded, and they cut out great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with worked stone.18 Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Gebalites cut them, and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.
