1 O Senhor me disse o seguinte:

2 — Homem mortal, faça para os israelitas uma comparação 3 para que saibam o que eu, o Senhor Deus, estou dizendo. Era uma vez uma águia gigantesca , de asas enormes, bem abertas, toda coberta de lindas penas. Ela voou para os montes Líbanos e quebrou a ponta de um cedro . 4 Ela levou essa ponta para uma terra de negociantes e a deixou numa cidade de vendedores . 5 Aí ela pegou na terra de Israel a muda de uma planta e a plantou numa terra boa, onde sempre havia água para fazê-la crescer. 6 A planta cresceu e se tornou uma parreira baixa, mas esparramada. Os galhos se viraram para o lado da águia, e as raízes cresceram bem fundas. A parreira tinha galhos e estava coberta de folhas.

7 — Havia outra águia gigantesca , de asas enormes e muitas penas. A parreira virou as suas raízes e os seus galhos na direção da águia , esperando que ela lhe desse mais água do que havia no pomar onde estava plantada. 8 Mas a parreira tinha sido plantada em terra boa e bem-regada, para que fosse uma ótima planta, coberta de folhas, e que produzisse uvas.

9 — Agora, eu, o Senhor Deus, pergunto: "Será que essa parreira vai crescer? Será que a primeira águia não vai arrancá-la pelas raízes, apanhar as uvas e quebrar os ramos, deixando-os secar? Não será necessária muita força nem uma nação poderosa para arrancá-la. 10 Sim! Ela está plantada, mas será que vai crescer? Será que não vai secar quando o vento leste a castigar? Será que não vai secar no pomar onde está plantada?"

11 E o Senhor me disse:

12 — Pergunte a esses rebeldes se entenderam o que essa comparação quer dizer. Diga-lhes que o rei da Babilônia veio a Jerusalém, pegou o rei e os seus oficiais e os levou para a Babilônia. 13 Ele escolheu um homem da família do rei , fez um tratado com ele e o obrigou a jurar que lhe seria fiel. O rei da Babilônia também levou os homens importantes 14 para evitar que a nação se levantasse outra vez e para ter certeza de que o tratado seria cumprido. 15 Mas o rei de Judá se revoltou e enviou mensageiros ao Egito para conseguirem cavalos e um exército numeroso. Será que isso vai dar certo? E quem faz uma coisa dessas, será que vai escapar? Será que pode quebrar o tratado e escapar do castigo?

16 — Juro pela minha vida — diz o Senhor Deus — que esse rei morrerá na Babilônia, pois quebrou o juramento e o tratado que havia feito com o rei da Babilônia, que o pôs no trono. 17 Nem o poderoso exército do rei do Egito seria capaz de ajudá-lo na guerra, quando os babilônios construírem rampas e torres de ataque a fim de matar muita gente. 18 Ele quebrou o juramento e o tratado que havia feito. E, porque fez todas essas coisas, não escapará.

19 O Senhor Deus diz:

— Juro pela minha vida que eu castigarei o rei por ter quebrado o tratado que pelo meu nome ele jurou guardar. 20 Estenderei uma rede de caçador e o pegarei nela. Eu o levarei à Babilônia e o castigarei ali, pois ele foi infiel a mim. 21 Os seus melhores soldados serão mortos em batalha, e os que ficarem vivos serão espalhados em todas as direções. Aí vocês ficarão sabendo que eu, o Senhor, falei.

22 O Senhor Deus diz isto:

"Tirarei a ponta de um cedro alto ;

cortarei um broto novo

e o plantarei num monte elevado,

23 no monte mais alto de Israel .

Ele soltará galhos,

produzirá sementes

e se tornará um cedro muito lindo.

Pássaros de todo tipo viverão ali

e acharão abrigo na sua sombra.

24 Todas as árvores dos campos ficarão sabendo

que eu sou o Senhor.

Eu derrubo as árvores altas

e faço as árvores pequenas crescerem.

Eu seco as árvores verdes

e faço com que as árvores secas fiquem verdes de novo.

— Eu, o Senhor, falei; eu cumprirei o que prometi."

1 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,2 "Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;3 and say, 'Thus says the Lord God: "A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar:4 he cropped off the topmost of the young twigs of it, and carried it to a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.5 He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters; he set it as a willow tree.6 It grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and its roots were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.7 '"There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it.8 It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine."'9 "Say, 'Thus says the Lord God: "Shall it prosper? Shall he not pull up its roots, and cut off its fruit, that it may wither; that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? And not by a strong arm or many people can it be raised from its roots.10 Yes, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? Shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind touches it? It shall wither in the beds where it grew."'"11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,12 "Say now to the rebellious house, 'Do you not know what these things mean?' Tell them, 'Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took its king, and its princes, and brought them to him to Babylon:13 and he took of the royal family, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;14 that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.15 But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Shall he prosper? Shall he escape who does such things? Shall he break the covenant, and yet escape?16 "'As I live,' says the Lord God, 'surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.17 Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts, to cut off many persons.18 For he has despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet has done all these things; he shall not escape.'19 "Therefore thus says the Lord God: 'As I live, surely my oath that he has despised, and my covenant that he has broken, I will even bring it on his own head.20 I will spread my net on him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me.21 All his fugitives in all his bands shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered toward every wind: and you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken it.'22 "Thus says the Lord God: 'I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain:23 in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shade of its branches shall they dwell.24 All the trees of the field shall know that I, the Lord, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, the Lord, have spoken and have done it.'"
