1 O Senhor Deus mandou que Moisés e Arão 2 dessem aos israelitas a seguinte ordem:

— Tragam uma novilha vermelha sem defeito e que ainda não tenha trabalhado na lavoura 3 e entreguem ao sacerdote Eleazar. Ela deverá ser levada para fora do acampamento e será morta ali na frente dele. 4 Então Eleazar pegará o sangue e com o dedo o borrifará sete vezes na direção da entrada da Tenda Sagrada. 5 Em seguida a novilha será queimada na frente dele. Serão queimados o couro, a carne, o sangue e as tripas. 6 O sacerdote pegará um pedaço de madeira de cedro, um galho de hissopo e lã tingida de vermelho e os jogará no fogo em que a novilha estiver sendo queimada. 7 Aí ele lavará a roupa que estiver vestindo e tomará um banho e depois poderá entrar no acampamento. Mas ficará impuro até o pôr do sol. 8 Aquele que queimar a novilha também lavará a roupa que estiver vestindo e tomará um banho, mas ficará impuro até o pôr do sol. 9 Um homem que esteja puro ajuntará as cinzas da novilha e as colocará fora do acampamento, num lugar puro. Ali elas serão guardadas pelo povo de Israel para serem usadas na preparação da água que tira a impureza das pessoas. Essa cerimônia serve para tirar pecados. 10 Aquele que ajuntar as cinzas deverá lavar a roupa que estiver vestindo, mas ficará impuro até o pôr do sol. Essa lei será para sempre, tanto para os israelitas como para os estrangeiros que moram com vocês.

11 — Quem tocar em algum defunto ficará impuro sete dias. 12 No terceiro dia e no sétimo essa pessoa deverá se purificar com a água da purificação e ficará pura. Mas, se ela não se purificar no terceiro dia e no sétimo, não ficará pura. 13 Toda pessoa que tocar num defunto e não se purificar ficará impura porque a água da purificação não foi jogada sobre ela. Ela faz com que a Tenda de Deus, o Senhor, fique impura. Essa pessoa não pertencerá mais ao povo de Israel.

14 — Se alguém morrer numa barraca, quem entrar nela ou estiver nela ficará impuro sete dias. 15 O pote ou jarro que estiver aberto ou destampado ficará impuro. 16 Se no campo alguém tocar numa pessoa que foi morta ou teve morte natural, ou tocar em qualquer osso de gente ou numa sepultura, ficará impuro sete dias.

17 — Para purificarem essa pessoa que ficou impura, vocês deverão pegar as cinzas da novilha vermelha que foi queimada como oferta para tirar o pecado, deverão colocá-las dentro de um pote e derramar água limpa em cima. 18 No caso de alguém ter tocado num defunto, um homem que esteja puro pegará um galho de hissopo, molhará naquela água e com ela borrifará a barraca e todas as coisas e pessoas que estiverem ali dentro. Se alguém tiver tocado em osso de gente ou numa sepultura, deverá ser borrifado com a água da purificação por uma pessoa que esteja pura. 19 No terceiro dia e no sétimo quem estiver puro borrifará água sobre a pessoa impura. No sétimo dia a pessoa ficará pura. Ela deverá lavar a roupa que estiver vestindo, e tomará um banho, e ao pôr do sol ficará pura.

20 — No entanto, quem estiver impuro e não se purificar ficará impuro porque a água da purificação não foi borrifada nele. Essa pessoa fez com que a Tenda do Senhor ficasse impura e por isso essa pessoa será expulsa do meio do povo de Israel. 21 Vocês deverão obedecer a essa lei para sempre. A pessoa que borrifar a água da purificação deverá lavar a roupa que estiver vestindo. E quem tocar na água ficará impuro até o pôr do sol. 22 Tudo o que uma pessoa impura tocar ficará impuro; e quem tocar nessa pessoa também ficará impuro até o pôr do sol.

1 The Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,2 "This is the statute of the law which the Lord has commanded: Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no blemish, and which was never yoked.3 You shall give her to Eleazar the priest, and he shall bring her forth outside of the camp, and one shall kill her before his face:4 and Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle her blood toward the front of the Tent of Meeting seven times.5 One shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn:6 and the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the evening.8 He who burns her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the evening.9 "A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up outside of the camp in a clean place; and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water for impurity: it is a sin offering.10 He who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening: and it shall be to the children of Israel, and to the stranger who lives as a foreigner among them, for a statute forever.11 "He who touches the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days:12 the same shall purify himself with water on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he doesn't purify himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.13 Whoever touches a dead person, the body of a man who has died, and doesn't purify himself, defiles the tabernacle of the Lord; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water for impurity was not sprinkled on him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet on him.14 "This is the law when a man dies in a tent: everyone who comes into the tent, and everyone who is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.15 Every open vessel, which has no covering bound on it, is unclean.16 "Whoever in the open field touches one who is slain with a sword, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.17 "For the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the sin offering; and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel:18 and a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent, and on all the vessels, and on the persons who were there, and on him who touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave:19 and the clean person shall sprinkle on the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify him; and he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at evening.20 But the man who shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the Lord: the water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean.21 It shall be a perpetual statute to them: and he who sprinkles the water for impurity shall wash his clothes, and he who touches the water for impurity shall be unclean until evening.22 "Whatever the unclean person touches shall be unclean; and the soul that touches it shall be unclean until evening."
