1 Um dia Noemi disse a Rute:

— Minha filha, preciso arranjar um marido para você, a fim de que você tenha um lar. 2 Você lembra que Boaz, o homem que a deixou trabalhar com as suas empregadas, é um dos nossos parentes? Pois bem! Esta noite ele vai debulhar a cevada. 3 Faça o seguinte: lave-se, ponha perfume e vista o seu melhor vestido. Depois vá até o lugar onde Boaz está trabalhando, mas não o deixe saber que você está ali, até que ele acabe de comer e de beber. 4 Quando Boaz for dormir, olhe bem onde ele vai se deitar. Então vá, levante a coberta dos pés dele e deite-se ali. Ele dirá o que você deve fazer.

5 Rute respondeu:

— Vou fazer tudo o que a senhora disse.

6 Ela foi ao lugar onde debulhavam as espigas e fez tudo o que a sua sogra havia mandado. 7 Quando Boaz acabou de comer e de beber, ficou um pouco alegre e foi dormir perto de um monte de cevada. Então Rute veio de mansinho, levantou a coberta dos pés dele e se deitou ali. 8 No meio da noite ele acordou de repente, sentou-se e ficou muito admirado de encontrar uma mulher deitada perto dos seus pés.

9 Ele perguntou:

— Quem é você?

— Eu sou Rute, a sua empregada! — respondeu ela. — O senhor é nosso parente chegado e por isso tem o dever de me proteger.

10 Boaz respondeu:

— Que o Senhor a abençoe, minha filha! Você está mostrando maior lealdade à família do seu sogro naquilo que está fazendo agora do que naquilo que fez pela sua sogra. Pois você não foi procurar um homem mais moço, fosse rico ou fosse pobre. 11 Agora, minha filha, não tenha medo. Na cidade toda gente sabe que você é uma mulher direita. Vou fazer tudo o que me pede. 12 De fato, sou seu parente chegado e sou responsável por você. Mas acontece que há um homem que também é seu parente e até mais chegado do que eu. 13 Fique aqui o resto da noite, e de manhã nós veremos se ele quer ser responsável por você. Se ele quiser, muito bem; mas, se não quiser, prometo por Deus, o Senhor, que ficarei com essa responsabilidade. Agora deite-se e durma de novo.

14 Então Rute passou o resto da noite deitada aos pés dele. Enquanto ainda estava escuro, ela se levantou para não ser vista, pois Boaz não queria que ninguém soubesse que uma mulher havia ido lá.

15 Então Boaz disse:

— Tire a sua capa e estenda no chão.

Ela estendeu, e ele despejou na capa uns vinte quilos de cevada e a ajudou a pôr no ombro. Aí Rute voltou para a cidade.

16 Quando ela chegou a casa, a sua sogra perguntou:

— Como foram as coisas, minha filha?

Rute contou tudo o que Boaz tinha feito por ela. E disse ainda:

17 — Ele também me deu toda esta cevada e disse: "Não volte para casa sem levar alguma coisa para a sua sogra."

18 Então Noemi disse:

— Agora, minha filha, tenha paciência e espere para ver o que vai acontecer. Pois Boaz não vai descansar enquanto não resolver esse assunto, ainda hoje.

1 Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?2 Now isn't Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he winnows barley tonight at the threshing floor.3 Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, get dressed, and go down to the threshing floor, but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.4 It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies, and you shall go in, and uncover his feet, and lie down; then he will tell you what you shall do."5 She said to her, "All that you say I will do."6 She went down to the threshing floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law told her.7 When Boaz had eaten and drank, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. She came quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.8 It happened at midnight, that the man was startled and turned over; and behold, a woman lay at his feet.9 He said, "Who are you?"She answered, "I am Ruth your handmaid. Therefore spread the corner of your garment over your handmaid; for you are a redeeming kinsman."10 He said, "Blessed are you by the Lord, my daughter. You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as you didn't follow young men, whether poor or rich.11 Now, my daughter, do not be afraid; I will do to you all that you say; for all the city of my people does know that you are a worthy woman.12 Now it is true that I am a redeeming kinsman; however there is a redeemer closer than I am.13 Stay this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform for you the part of a redeemer, well; let him do the redeemer's part. But if he will not do the part of a redeemer for you, then I will do the part of a redeemer for you, as the Lord lives. Lie down until the morning."14 She lay at his feet until the morning. She rose up before one could discern another. For he said, "Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor."15 He said, "Bring the mantle that is on you, and hold it." She held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; and he went into the city.16 When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, "How did it go, my daughter?"She told her all that the man had done to her.17 She said, "He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said, 'Do not go empty to your mother-in-law.'"18 Then she said, "Wait, my daughter, until you know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he has finished the thing this day."
