1 No terceiro dia de jejum, Ester se vestiu com as suas roupas de rainha, foi e ficou esperando no pátio de dentro do palácio, em frente do salão nobre do rei. Ele estava lá dentro, sentado no trono, que ficava em frente da porta do pátio. 2 E, quando ele viu a rainha Ester esperando lá fora no pátio, teve boa vontade para com ela e estendeu-lhe o seu cetro de ouro. Ester entrou, chegou perto dele e tocou na ponta do cetro. 3 E o rei perguntou:

— O que está acontecendo, rainha Ester? O que você deseja? Peça o que quiser, que eu lhe darei, mesmo que seja a metade do meu reino.

4 Ester respondeu:

— Se for do seu agrado, eu gostaria de convidar o senhor e Hamã para o banquete que estou preparando hoje para o senhor.

5 Aí o rei ordenou:

— Digam a Hamã que venha depressa, para que nós aceitemos o convite de Ester.

Assim o rei e Hamã foram ao banquete que Ester havia preparado. 6 Quando estavam bebendo vinho, o rei perguntou a Ester:

— Qual é o seu pedido? Peça o que quiser, que eu lhe darei, mesmo que seja a metade do meu reino.

7 Ester respondeu:

— É o seguinte: 8 se eu puder me valer da bondade do rei, e se for do seu agrado atender o meu pedido, gostaria de convidar o senhor e Hamã para outro banquete que eu vou preparar amanhã para os dois. Aí lhe direi o que eu quero.

9 Hamã saiu do banquete alegre e feliz da vida. Porém, quando chegou perto da entrada do palácio, ele encontrou Mordecai ali e ficou furioso porque Mordecai não se curvou diante dele, nem fez qualquer outro sinal de respeito. 10 Mas ele se controlou e voltou para casa. Então mandou chamar os amigos e pediu que Zeres, a sua mulher, também viesse. 11 Hamã começou a falar da sua riqueza, do número de filhos que tinha, das promoções que havia recebido do rei e de como agora ocupava a mais alta posição do reino, acima de todos os outros ministros e funcionários. 12 E continuou:

— Além de tudo isso, eu fui a única pessoa que a rainha Ester convidou para acompanhar o rei ao banquete que ela preparou para ele. E ela também me pediu que eu fosse com ele a outro banquete amanhã! 13 Mas tudo isso não me vale nada enquanto eu continuar vendo Mordecai, aquele judeu, sentado na entrada do palácio.

14 Aí a mulher dele e todos os amigos deram a seguinte sugestão:

— Mande fazer uma forca de uns vinte metros de altura e amanhã de manhã peça ao rei que mande enforcar Mordecai. Então você poderá ir feliz com o rei ao banquete.

Hamã gostou da ideia e mandou construir a forca.

1 And it came to pass, on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the house of the king, over against the house of the king,and, the king, was sitting upon his royal seat, in the royal house, over against the opening of the house.

2 And it came to pass, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his eyes,and the king held out to Esther, the golden sceptre which was in his hand, so Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.

3 Then said the king unto her, What aileth thee, Queen Esther? and what is thy request? Unto the half of the kingdom, shall it be given thee.

4 Then said Esther, If, unto the king, it seem good, let the king with Haman come in this day, unto the banquet which I have prepared for him.

5 And the king said, Hasten ye Haman, to perform the word of Esther. So the king with Haman came in, unto the banquet which Esther had prepared,

6 Then said the king unto Esther, during the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, that it may be granted thee?and what is thy request-unto the half of the kingdomthat it may be performed?

7 Then answered Esther, and said,As touching my petition and my request,

8 If I have found favour in the eyes of the king, and if, unto the king, it seem good, to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king with Haman come in unto the banquet which I will prepare for them, and, to-morrow, I will do according to the word of the king.

9 Then went Haman forth on that day, joyful and of a merry heart,but, when Haman saw Mordecai in the gate of the king, that he rose not up nor moved because of him, then was Haman filled with wrath against Mordecai.

10 Nevertheless Haman restrained himself, and came into his own house,and sent and brought in his friends, and Zeresh his wife;

11 and Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children,and all the things wherein the king had promoted him to power, and how he had advanced him, above the rulers and the servants of the king.

12 And Haman said, Moreover Esther the queen did bring in no one with the king into the banquet which she had prepared, saving myself,yea moreover, even for to-morrow, I, am invited unto her, with the king.

13 Yet, all this, sufficeth me not,so long as, I, see Mordecai the Jew, sitting in the gate of the king.

14 Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let them make ready a gallows, of the height of fifty cubits, and, in the morning, speak thou unto the king, that they hang Mordecai thereon, then go with the king into the banquet joyfully. And the thing seemed good before Haman, and he made ready the gallows.
