1 De onde vêm as lutas e as brigas entre vocês? Elas vêm dos maus desejos que estão sempre lutando dentro de vocês. 2 Vocês querem muitas coisas; mas, como não podem tê-las, estão prontos até para matar a fim de consegui-las. Vocês as desejam ardentemente; mas, como não conseguem possuí-las, brigam e lutam. Não conseguem o que querem porque não pedem a Deus. 3 E, quando pedem, não recebem porque os seus motivos são maus. Vocês pedem coisas a fim de usá-las para os seus próprios prazeres. 4 Gente infiel! Será que vocês não sabem que ser amigo do mundo é ser inimigo de Deus? Quem quiser ser amigo do mundo se torna inimigo de Deus. 5 Não pensem que não quer dizer nada esta passagem das Escrituras Sagradas : "O espírito que Deus pôs em nós está cheio de desejos violentos." 6 Porém a bondade que Deus mostra é ainda mais forte, pois as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: "Deus é contra os orgulhosos, mas é bondoso com os humildes."

7 Portanto, obedeçam a Deus e enfrentem o Diabo, que ele fugirá de vocês. 8 Cheguem perto de Deus, e ele chegará perto de vocês. Lavem as mãos, pecadores! Limpem o coração, hipócritas! 9 Fiquem tristes, gritem e chorem. Mudem as suas risadas em choro e a sua alegria em tristeza. 10 Humilhem-se diante do Senhor, e ele os colocará numa posição de honra.

11 Meus irmãos, não falem mal uns dos outros. Quem fala mal do seu irmão em Cristo ou o julga está falando mal da lei e julgando-a. Pois, se você julga a lei, então já não é uma pessoa que obedece à lei, mas é alguém que a julga. 12 Deus é o único que faz as leis e o único juiz. Só ele pode salvar ou destruir. Quem você pensa que é, para julgar os outros?

13 Agora escutem, vocês que dizem: "Hoje ou amanhã iremos a tal cidade e ali ficaremos um ano fazendo negócios e ganhando muito dinheiro!" 14 Vocês não sabem como será a sua vida amanhã, pois vocês são como uma neblina passageira, que aparece por algum tempo e logo depois desaparece. 15 O que vocês deveriam dizer é isto: "Se Deus quiser, estaremos vivos e faremos isto ou aquilo." 16 Porém vocês são orgulhosos e vivem se gabando. Todo esse orgulho é mau. 17 Portanto, comete pecado a pessoa que sabe fazer o bem e não faz.

1 Whence wars and whence fightings among you? are they not from hencedue to your pleasures which are taking the field in your members?2 Ye covetand have not, ye commit murder, and are jealousand cannot obtain,ye fight and war. Ye have notbecause ye do not really ask,3 Ye ask and receive not, because that, basely, ye ask, in order that, in your pleasures, ye may spend .4 Adulteresses! Know ye not that, the friendship of the world, is, enmity to God? Whosoever, therefore, is minded to be, a friend, of the world, an enemy of God, doth constitute himself.5 Or think ye that, in vain, the scripture speaketh? Is it, for envying, that the spirit which hath taken an abode within us doth crave?6 Howbeit he giveth, greater, favour. Wherefore it saithGod, against the haughty, arrayeth himself, Whereas, unto the lowly, he giveth favour.7 Range yourselves, therefore, under God, but withstand the adversary, and he will flee from you:8 Draw near unto God, and he will draw near unto you. Cleanse hands, sinners! Chasten hearts, double souls!9 Be miserable and lament and weep, let, your laughter, into lamentation, be turned, and, your joy, into dejection;10 Be made low in presence of the Lord, and he will lift you up.11 Be not speaking one against another, brethren! He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against law, and judgeth law; Now, if, upon law, thou art passing judgment, thou art not a doer of law, but a judge!12 One, is Lawgiver and JudgeHe who hath power to save and to destroy; but who art, thou, that judgest thy neighbour?13 Come now! ye that sayToday or To-morrow, we will journey unto this city here, and will spend there a year, and will trade and get gain,14 Men who are not versed in the morrowof what sort your life ; for ye are, a vapourfor a little, appearing, then, just disappearing!15 Instead of your sayingIf, the Lord, be pleased, we shall both, live and do this or that;16 Whereas, now, are ye boasting in your pretensions:All boasting like this, is, wicked,17 To him, therefore, who knoweth how to be doing, a right thing, and is not doing it, it is, sin, unto him.
