1 Vejam como é grande o amor que o Pai nos concedeu: que fôssemos chamados filhos de Deus, o que de fato somos! Por isso o mundo não nos conhece, porque não o conheceu.2 Amados, agora somos filhos de Deus, e ainda não se manifestou o que havemos de ser, mas sabemos que, quando ele se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele, pois o veremos como ele é.3 Todo aquele que nele tem esta esperança purifica-se a si mesmo, assim como ele é puro.4 Todo aquele que pratica o pecado transgride a Lei; de fato, o pecado é a transgressão da Lei.5 Vocês sabem que ele se manifestou para tirar os nossos pecados, e nele não há pecado.6 Todo aquele que nele permanece não está no pecado. Todo aquele que está no pecado não o viu nem o conheceu.7 Filhinhos, não deixem que ninguém os engane. Aquele que pratica a justiça é justo, assim como ele é justo.8 Aquele que pratica o pecado é do diabo, porque o diabo vem pecando desde o princípio. Para isso o Filho de Deus se manifestou: para destruir as obras do diabo.9 Todo aquele que é nascido de Deus não pratica o pecado, porque a semente de Deus permanece nele; ele não pode estar no pecado, porque é nascido de Deus.10 Desta forma sabemos quem são os filhos de Deus e quem são os filhos do diabo: quem não pratica a justiça não procede de Deus; e também quem não ama seu irmão.11 Esta é a mensagem que vocês ouviram desde o princípio: que nos amemos uns aos outros.12 Não sejamos como Caim, que pertencia ao Maligno e matou seu irmão. E por que o matou? Porque suas obras eram más e as de seu irmão eram justas.13 Meus irmãos, não se admirem se o mundo os odeia.14 Sabemos que já passamos da morte para a vida porque amamos nossos irmãos. Quem não ama permanece na morte.15 Quem odeia seu irmão é assassino, e vocês sabem que nenhum assassino tem vida eterna em si mesmo.16 Nisto conhecemos o que é o amor: Jesus Cristo deu a sua vida por nós, e devemos dar a nossa vida por nossos irmãos.17 Se alguém tiver recursos materiais e, vendo seu irmão em necessidade, não se compadecer dele, como pode permanecer nele o amor de Deus?18 Filhinhos, não amemos de palavra nem de boca, mas em ação e em verdade.19 Assim saberemos que somos da verdade; e tranqüilizaremos o nosso coração diante dele20 quando o nosso coração nos condenar. Porque Deus é maior do que o nosso coração e sabe todas as coisas.21 Amados, se o nosso coração não nos condenar, temos confiança diante de Deus22 e recebemos dele tudo o que pedimos, porque obedecemos aos seus mandamentos e fazemos o que lhe agrada.23 E este é o seu mandamento: que creiamos no nome de seu Filho Jesus Cristo e que nos amemos uns aos outros, como ele nos ordenou.24 Os que obedecem aos seus mandamentos permanecem nele, e ele neles. Deste modo sabemos que ele permanece em nós: pelo Espírito que nos deu.

1 Behold what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we may be called children of God. Because of this the world does not know you, because it did not know him.2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it is not yet made known what we will be. But we know that whenever he is made known we will be like him, because we will see him as he is.3 And every man who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as that man is pure.4 Every man doing sin also does lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.5 And ye know that that man was made known so that he might take up our sins. And in him is no sin.6 Every man abiding in him does not sin. Every man who is sinning has not seen him, nor has known him.7 Little children, let no man lead you astray. He who is doing righteousness is righteous, just as that man is righteous.8 He who is doing sin is of the devil, because the devil sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was made known for this, so that he might destroy the works of the devil.9 Every man who has been begotten of God is not doing sin, because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God.10 By this the children of God are visible, and the children of the devil. Every man not doing righteousness is not of God, and he who is not loving his brother.11 Because this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love each other.12 Not as Cain. He was of the wicked, and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were wrong, and his brother's right.13 Marvel not, my brothers, if the world hates you.14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. He who is not loving the brother abides in death.15 Every man hating his brother is a man-killer. And ye know that no man-killer has eternal life abiding in him.16 By this we know love, because that man laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.17 But whoever has the world's living, and sees his brother having need, and closes his bowels from him, how does the love of God abide in him?18 My Little children, we should not love in word, nor with the tongue, but in deed and in truth.19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and will assure our hearts before him.20 Because if our heart should condemn us, that God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.21 Beloved, if our heart should not condemn us, we have confidence toward God,22 and whatever we may ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do things pleasing in his sight.23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love each other, just as he gave command.24 And he who keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, from the Spirit that he gave us.
