1 Saul voltou da luta contra os filisteus e disseram-lhe que Davi estava no deserto de En-Gedi.2 Então Saul tomou três mil de seus melhores soldados de todo o Israel e partiu à procura de Davi e seus homens perto dos rochedos dos Bodes Selvagens.3 Ele foi aos currais de ovelhas que ficavam junto ao caminho; havia ali uma caverna, e Saul entrou nela para fazer suas necessidades. Davi e seus soldados estavam bem no fundo da caverna.4 Eles disseram: "Este é o dia sobre o qual o Senhor lhe falou: ‘Entregarei nas suas mãos seu inimigo para que você faça com ele o que quiser’ ". Então Davi foi com muito cuidado e cortou uma ponta do manto de Saul, sem que este percebesse.5 Mas Davi sentiu bater-lhe o coração de remorso por ele ter cortado uma ponta do manto de Saul.6 E então disse a seus soldados: "Que o SENHOR me livre de fazer tal coisa a meu senhor, de erguer a mão contra ele; pois é o ungido do Senhor".7 Com essas palavras Davi repreendeu os soldados e não permitiu que atacassem Saul. E este saiu da caverna e seguiu seu caminho.8 Então Davi saiu da caverna e gritou para Saul: "Ó rei, meu senhor! " Quando Saul olhou para trás, Davi inclinou-se, rosto em terra.9 E depois disse: "Por que o rei dá atenção aos que dizem que eu pretendo lhe fazer mal?10 Hoje o rei pode ver com os próprios olhos como o Senhor o entregou em minhas mãos na caverna. Alguns insistiram que eu o matasse, mas eu o poupei, pois disse: ‘Não erguerei a mão contra meu senhor, pois ele é o ungido do Senhor’.11 Olha, meu pai, olha para este pedaço de teu manto em minha mão! Cortei a ponta de teu manto, mas não o matei. Agora entende e reconhece que não sou culpado de fazer o mal ou de rebelar-me. Não lhe fiz mal algum, embora estejas à minha procura para tirar-me a vida.12 O Senhor julgue entre mim e ti. Vingue ele os males que tens feito contra mim, mas não levantarei a mão contra ti.13 Como diz o provérbio antigo: ‘Dos ímpios vêm coisas ímpias’; por isso não levantarei a minha mão contra ti".14 "Contra quem saiu o rei de Israel? A quem está perseguindo? A um cão morto! A uma pulga!15 O Senhor seja o juiz e nos julgue. Considere ele minha causa e a sustente; que ele me julgue, livrando-me de tuas mãos. "16 Tendo Davi falado todas essas palavras, Saul perguntou: "É você, meu filho Davi? " E chorou em voz alta.17 "Você é mais justo do que eu", disse ele a Davi. "Você me tratou bem, mas eu o tratei mal. "18 "Você acabou de mostrar o bem que me tem feito; o Senhor me entregou em suas mãos, mas você não me matou.19 Quando um homem encontra um inimigo e o deixa ir sem fazer-lhe mal? O Senhor o recompense com o bem, pelo modo como você me tratou hoje.20 Agora tenho certeza de que você será rei e de que o reino de Israel será firmado em suas mãos.21 Portanto, jure-me pelo Senhor que você não eliminará meus descendentes nem fará meu nome desaparecer da família de meu pai".22 Então Davi fez seu juramento a Saul. E este voltou para casa, mas Davi e seus soldados foram para a fortaleza.

1 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave, and Saul went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave.4 And the men of David said to him, Behold, the day of which LORD said to thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, and thou shall do to him as it shall seem good to thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.6 And he said to his men, LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, LORD's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, since he is LORD's anointed.7 So David restrained his men with these words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance.9 And David said to Saul, Why do thou hearken to men's words, saying, Behold, David seeks thy hurt?10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that LORD had delivered thee today into my hand in the cave. And some bade me kill thee, but [I] spared thee. And I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is LORD's anoi11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand, for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not. Know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned12 LORD judge between me and thee, and LORD avenge me of thee, but my hand shall not be upon thee.13 As says the proverb of the ancients, Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness, but my hand shall not be upon thee.14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? After whom do thou pursue? After a dead dog, after a flea.15 LORD therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.17 And he said to David, Thou are more righteous than I, for thou have rendered to me good, whereas I have rendered to thee evil.18 And thou have declared this day how that thou have dealt well with me, inasmuch as when LORD had delivered me up into thy hand, thou killed me not.19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away well? Therefore LORD reward thee good for that which thou have done to me this day.20 And now, behold, I know that thou shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand.21 Swear now therefore to me by LORD, that thou will not cut off my seed after me, and that thou will not destroy my name out of my father's house.22 And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home, but David and his men got up to the stronghold.
