1 Naquela noite o rei não conseguiu dormir; por isso ordenou que trouxessem o livro das crônicas do seu reinado, e que o lessem para ele.2 E foi lido o registro de que Mardoqueu tinha denunciado Bigtã e Teres, dois dos oficiais do rei que guardavam a entrada do Palácio, que haviam conspirado para assassinar o rei Xerxes.3 "Que honra e reconhecimento Mardoqueu recebeu por isso? ", perguntou o rei. Seus oficiais responderam: "Nada lhe foi feito".4 O rei perguntou: "Quem está no pátio? " Ora, Hamã havia acabado de entrar no pátio externo do palácio para pedir ao rei o enforcamento de Mardoqueu na forca que ele lhe havia preparado.5 Os oficiais do rei responderam: "É Hamã que está no pátio". "Façam-no entrar", ordenou o rei.6 Entrando Hamã, o rei lhe perguntou: "O que se deve fazer ao homem que o rei tem o prazer de honrar? " E Hamã pensou consigo: "A quem o rei teria prazer de honrar, senão a mim? "7 Por isso respondeu ao rei: "Ao homem que o rei tem prazer de honrar,8 ordena que tragam um manto do próprio rei e um cavalo que o rei montou, e que leve o brasão do rei na cabeça.9 Em seguida, sejam o manto e o cavalo confiados a alguns dos príncipes mais nobres do rei, e ponham eles o manto sobre o homem que o rei deseja honrar e o conduzam sobre o cavalo pelas ruas da cidade, proclamando diante dele: ‘Isto é o que se faz ao homem que o rei tem o prazer de honrar! ’ "10 O rei ordenou então a Hamã: "Vá depressa apanhar o manto e o cavalo, e faça ao judeu Mardoqueu o que você sugeriu. Ele está sentado junto à porta do palácio real. Não omita nada do que você recomendou".11 Então, Hamã apanhou o cavalo, vestiu Mardoqueu com o manto e o conduziu sobre o cavalo pelas ruas da cidade, proclamando à frente dele: "Isto é o que se faz ao homem que o rei tem o prazer de honrar! "12 Depois disso, Mardoqueu voltou para a porta do palácio real. Hamã, porém, correu para casa com o rosto coberto, muito aborrecido13 e contou a Zeres, sua mulher, e a todos os seus amigos tudo o que lhe havia acontecido. Tanto o seus conselheiros como Zeres, sua mulher, lhe disseram: "Visto que Mardoqueu, diante de quem começou a sua queda, é de origem judaica, você não terá condições de enfrentá-lo. Sem dúvida, você ficará arruinado! "14 E, enquanto ainda conversavam, chegaram os oficiais do rei e, às pressas, levaram Hamã para o banquete que Ester havia preparado.

Now Haman said in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honor more than to myself?7 And Haman said to the king, For the man whom the king delights to honor,8 let royal apparel be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides upon, and on the head of which a royal crown is set.9 And let the apparel and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble rulers, that they may array the man therewith whom the king delights to honor, and cause him to ride on horseback through the street of the10 Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou have said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king's gate. Let nothing fail of all that thou have spoken.11 Then Haman took the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and caused him to ride through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.12 And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hastened to his house, mourning and having his head covered.13 And Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had befallen him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, If Mordecai, before whom thou have begun to fall, be of the seed of the Jews, thou shal14 While they were yet talking with him, the king's chamberlains came, and hastened to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
