1 Josué convocou as tribos de Rúben, de Gade e a metade da tribo de Manassés2 e lhes disse: "Vocês fizeram tudo o que Moisés, servo do Senhor, ordenou.3 Durante muito tempo, e até hoje, vocês não abandonaram os seus irmãos, mas cumpriram a missão que o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhes entregou.4 Agora que o Senhor, o seu Deus, já concedeu descanso aos seus irmãos israelitas, como tinha prometido, voltem para casa, para a terra que Moisés, servo do Senhor, lhes deu no outro lado do Jordão.5 Mas guardem fielmente o mandamento e a lei que Moisés, servo do Senhor, lhes deu de amar o Senhor, o seu Deus, andar em todos os seus caminhos, obedecer aos seus mandamentos, apegar-se a ele e servi-lo de todo o coração e de toda a alma".6 Então Josué os abençoou e os despediu, e eles foram para casa.7 ( À metade da tribo de Manassés Moisés dera terras em Basã, e à outra metade da tribo Josué dera terras no lado oeste do Jordão, junto com outros israelitas. ) Ao mandá-los para casa, Josué os abençoou,8 dizendo: "Voltem para casa com as riquezas que juntaram: grandes rebanhos, prata, ouro, bronze e ferro, e muitas roupas. Dividam com os seus irmãos os despojos de seus inimigos".9 Assim as tribos de Rúben, de Gade e a metade da tribo de Manassés deixaram os outros israelitas em Siló, na terra de Canaã, para voltarem para Gileade, sua própria terra, da qual se apossaram de acordo com a ordem do Senhor, dada por meio de Moisés.10 Quando chegaram a Gelilote, perto do Jordão, em Canaã, as tribos de Rúben, de Gade e a metade da tribo de Manassés construíram um imponente altar ali, junto ao Jordão.11 E, quando os outros israelitas souberam que eles tinham construído o altar na fronteira de Canaã, em Gelilote, perto do Jordão, no lado israelita,12 toda a comunidade de Israel reuniu-se em Siló para guerrear contra eles.13 Então os israelitas enviaram Finéias, filho do sacerdote Eleazar, à terra de Gileade, às tribos de Rúben e Gade e à metade da tribo de Manassés.14 Com ele enviaram dez líderes, um de cada tribo de Israel, sendo cada um deles chefe de suas respectivas famílias dentre os clãs israelitas.15 Quando chegaram a Gileade, às tribos de Rúben e de Gade e à metade da tribo de Manassés, disseram-lhes:16 "Assim diz toda a comunidade do Senhor: ‘Como foi que vocês cometeram essa infidelidade para com o Deus de Israel? Como foi que se afastaram do Senhor, construindo um altar para vocês, rebelando-se assim contra ele?17 Já não nos bastou o pecado de Peor? Até hoje não nos purificamos daquele pecado, muito embora uma praga tenha caído sobre a comunidade do Senhor!18 E agora vocês estão abandonando o Senhor! " ‘Se hoje vocês se rebelarem contra o Senhor, amanhã a sua ira cairá sobre toda a comunidade de Israel.19 Se a terra que vocês receberam como propriedade está contaminada, passem então para a terra que pertence ao Senhor, onde está o tabernáculo do Senhor, e se apossem de um território entre nós. Mas não se rebelem contra o Senhor nem contra nós, construindo para vocês um altar que não seja o altar do Senhor, do nosso Deus.20 Quando Acã, filho de Zerá, foi infiel com relação às coisas consagradas, não caiu a ira sobre toda a comunidade de Israel? E ele não foi o único que morreu por causa do seu pecado’ ".21 Então as tribos de Rúben, de Gade e a metade da tribo de Manassés responderam aos chefes dos clãs de Israel:22 "O Poderoso, Deus, o Senhor! O Poderoso, Deus, o Senhor! Ele sabe! E que Israel o saiba! Se agimos com rebelião ou infidelidade para com o Senhor, não nos poupem hoje.23 Se construímos nosso próprio altar para nos afastarmos do Senhor e para oferecermos holocaustos e ofertas de cereal, ou sacrifícios de comunhão sobre ele, que o próprio Senhor nos peça contas disso!24 "Ao contrário! Fizemos isso temendo que no futuro os seus descendentes dissessem aos nossos: ‘Que relação vocês têm com o Senhor, com o Deus de Israel?25 Homens de Rúben e de Gade! O Senhor fez do Jordão uma fronteira entre nós e vocês. Vocês não têm parte com o Senhor’. Assim os seus descendentes poderiam levar os nossos a deixarem de temer o Senhor.26 "É por isso que resolvemos construir um altar, não para holocaustos ou sacrifícios,27 mas, para que esse altar sirva de testemunho entre nós e vocês e as gerações futuras, de que cultuaremos o Senhor em seu santuário com nossos holocaustos, sacrifícios e ofertas de comunhão. Então, no futuro, os seus descendentes não poderão dizer aos nossos: ‘Vocês não têm parte com o Senhor’.28 "E dissemos: Se algum dia disserem isso a nós ou aos nossos descendentes, responderemos: Vejam a réplica do altar do Senhor que os nossos antepassados construíram, não para holocaustos ou sacrifícios, mas como testemunho entre nós e vocês.29 "Longe de nós nos rebelarmos contra o Senhor e nos afastarmos dele, construindo para holocaustos, ofertas de cereal e sacrifícios um altar que não seja o altar do Senhor, do nosso Deus, que está diante do seu tabernáculo! "30 Quando o sacerdote Finéias e os líderes da comunidade, os chefes dos clãs dos israelitas, ouviram o que os homens de Rúben, de Gade e de Manassés disseram, deram-se por satisfeitos.31 E Finéias, filho do sacerdote Eleazar, disse a Rúben, a Gade e a Manassés: "Hoje sabemos que o Senhor está conosco, pois vocês não foram infiéis para com o Senhor. E assim vocês livraram os israelitas da mão do Senhor".32 Então Finéias, filho do sacerdote Eleazar, e os líderes voltaram do encontro com os homens de Rúben e de Gade em Gileade, e foram para Canaã dar relatório aos outros israelitas.33 Estes se alegraram com o relatório e louvaram a Deus. E não mais falaram em guerrear contra as tribos de Rúben e de Gade, nem em devastar a região onde eles viviam.34 Os homens de Rúben e de Gade deram ao altar este nome: Um Testemunho Entre Nós de que o Senhor é Deus.

1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,2 and said to them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of LORD commanded you, and have hearkened to my voice in all that I commanded you.3 Ye have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of LORD your God.4 And now LORD your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore now turn ye, and get you to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of LORD gave you beyond the Jordan.5 Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of LORD commanded you, to love LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cling to him, and to serve him with a6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away, and they went to their tents.7 Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua gave among their brothers beyond the Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,8 and spoke to them, saying, Return with much wealth to your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers9 And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the sons of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, o10 And when they came to the region about the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, a great altar to look upon.11 And the sons of Israel heard say, Behold, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that pertains t12 And when the sons of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the sons of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.13 And the sons of Israel sent Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest, to the sons of Reuben, and to the sons of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead,14 and with him ten rulers, one ruler of a fathers' house for each of the tribes of Israel. And they were each man of them head of their fathers' houses among the thousands of Israel.15 And they came to the sons of Reuben, and to the sons of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,16 Thus says the whole congregation of LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following LORD, in that ye have built for you an altar, to rebel this day against LORD?17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague upon the congregation of LORD,18 that ye must turn away this day from following LORD? And it will be, seeing ye rebel today against LORD, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.19 However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass ye over to the land of the possession of LORD, in which LORD's tabernacle dwells, and take possession among us, but do not rebel against LORD, nor rebel against us, in b20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in what was set apart, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.21 Then the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel,22 The Mighty One, God, LORD, the Mighty One, God, LORD, he knows, and Israel he shall know, if it is in rebellion, or if in trespass against LORD (do not save us this day),23 that we have built us an altar to turn away from following LORD, or if to offer burnt-offering or meal-offering on it, or if to offer sacrifices of peace-offerings on it, let LORD himself require it,24 and if we have not [rather] out of carefulness done this, from purpose, saying, In time to come your sons might speak to our sons, saying, What have ye to do with LORD, the God of Israel?25 For LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you, ye sons of Reuben and sons of Gad. Ye have no portion in LORD. So your sons might make our sons cease from fearing LORD.26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice,27 but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of LORD before him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings, that your sons may n28 Therefore we said, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice, but it is29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against LORD, and turn away this day from following LORD, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for meal-offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of LORD our God that is before his tabern30 And when Phinehas the priest, and the rulers of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the sons of Manasseh spoke, it pleased31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the sons of Reuben, and to the sons of Gad, and to the sons of Manasseh, This day we know that LORD is in the midst of us, because ye have not committed this trespass against LORD.32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the rulers, returned from the sons of Reuben, and from the sons of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the sons of Israel, and brought them word again.33 And the thing pleased the sons of Israel. And the sons of Israel blessed God, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad dwelt.34 And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad called the altar [Ed]. For, [they said], it is a witness between us that LORD is God.
